Why Phantasmagoria is awesome (and why it could never be released today) photo

Roberta Williams is a sweet looking woman who created some of the most memorable and influential PC games of the mid ‘80s: most importantly, the beloved King’s Quest series. Those classic adventure games were some of my favorite growing up and will forever hold a place in my lovely childhood memories (along with me running through a tulip-covered field with a litter of puppies).

But then the ‘90s rolled around and something – um – happened to poor, family-friendly Ms. Williams. Instead of creating a new iteration in her King’s Quest series, the talented designer decided to try something new and ended up creating one of the most gory, ridiculous, awesomely violent games ever made: Phantasmagoria.

But the strange thing is: this game could never have been released today. Sure, there was some mild controversy surrounding the game back then, but that didn’t stop it from easily hitting store shelves and was nothing even close to the huge firestorms it would experience here in the present.

So what is so “hardcore” about this ominously-titled game? And why are we here at Destructoid so obsessed? Hit the jump to find out (warning: videos are NSFW).

If you have ever played Phantasmagoria for the PC you must already know what I am talking about. The game is incredibly graphic, to say the least. But it isn’t just the obvious gore that makes this game so wrong (and nabs it the dubious title of the Showgirls of the videogame world; trust me, that is not a bad thing).

For the people who haven’t experienced this sick gem, here are the basics: Phantasmagoria is a point-and-click adventure that uses real actors interacting in computer-generated environments. Like most adventure games, you must solve almost nonsensical puzzles using a variety of items that you collect over the course of your journey.

The game tells the story of author Adrienne Delaney and her husband Donald Gordon. The two buy an enormous mansion in the middle of nowhere that was once owned by a mysterious old magician, Zoltan Carno. You see, Adrienne feels the old house will help inspire her to write a string of hopefully successful novels.

As Adrienne explores the huge mansion, she starts to see flashbacks of the now deceased magician and his many wives. It is during these flashbacks that the game goes from creepy survival horror to offensively over-the-top snuff film.

Now, there have been many videogame deaths over the years that may be even more hardcore than those in Phantasmagoria. I am not going to argue that. But when you combine the use of real actors with the shameless battering of women, well, the result is unlike anything you have even seen in a game before. This graphic violence towards innocent women is the main reason the game would never be released today.

Before I show you some clips, let it be known: I am not saying that any of this game should have been or should be censored. In fact, the overdramatic acting and jaw-dropping death scenes are the reasons I love the game as much as I do. I am just stating the obvious fact that this particular type of violence would most likely not be tolerated today.

With that being said, be prepared for some of the most ridiculously awesome cutscenes you will ever see in a game. Call them my Halloween treats to you …

First up we have poor Hortencia. She loved gardening and did nothing wrong her whole life. Well, except for marrying the horrible beast that is Carno. Seriously, take a look at this sequence. The woman does nothing wrong.

Now we have innocent Victoria. Again, she is just minding her own business when her “loving” husband randomly decides to walk up and brutally murder her. What a wonderful message!

While less graphic as the others, this next death is just as violent and offensive towards the game’s helpless female victims as all the others. I guess marrying that guy was a huge mistake, huh Leonora?

It’s time for the most offensive and controversial of the bunch. Actually, I am not even going to say anything about this one. Just watch:

Those poor women. What did they do to deserve all that horrible treatment (answer: NOTHING!)? But at least nothing gruesome happens to the cute protagonist, right? Um … well … watch the two clips below (the second one is a doozy):

And, oh yeah, did I mention that there is also a full on rape in the game as well (I will spare you the video for that one)? Needless to say, Phantasmagoria is one of the more incredibly violent and adult games ever released. Does that make it bad? Not at all. But do you really think a game like this could make it past the Jack Thompsons and extreme Conservatives of today? Probably not.

What do you think? Does this game seem tame by today’s standards, or, like me, is there something about the extreme violence towards women that just feels wrong?

mmmm Phantasmagoria *drool*

This game was, and still is, fucking awesome. I will admit that the first time I played it was 2 years ago, so I dont remember it as a kid. But I loved playing it then, and I think its about time for another run through.

THAT GAME IS AWESOME! And there is no way in holy hell that could be released by today's standards. But I would buy it.

I think the reason this would be scandalous is because of the use of actual actors. Of course, it's tame compared to what's in movies today, but VIDEO GAMES ARE FOR KIDS and people would be all over this.

Also, my dad owned this game but wouldn't let me play it when I was a kid, and now I'm pissed that he didn't (although I understand why. Hooray for responsible parenting! My parents also wouldn't let me play Leisure Suit Larry until I was 13, but Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter were just fine).

The player doesn't actually act those scenes out, which is what all the ratings boards seem to be afraid of. Apart from the rape scene, which I don't recall well, this would be on the tame side of an "R" rated movie -- and what's more, understandable to nongamers as just like a movie.

I'm not for censorship but you are completely missing the point. The arguement about videogames is that the player actually commits the misdeeds. This game is nothing more than a horror movie where the player acts in the role of the protagonist. If it could be released as a movie, it's fine as a videogame.

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been allowed by extreme liberals either, if you look back most video game legislation (see: gaming fear mongering) has been pushed by Democrats in the USA.

That's some evil stuff.

But I don't think it would have a problem being released today. Violent FMV never worried anyone. It's the polygons that scare that crap out of people.

If Manhunt 2 had FMV with fake looking effects like this games does, it would have never got banned.

@Lucid003,
Actually, I did not see that at all before writing this (I am just obsessed with this game). But right when it was posted I did see it (c/o Nex's post on the i-Mockery thing earlier this month) and ... well ... there lies the controversy. I couldn't decide whether to take it down to avoid something like this or just leave it up. I decided to just leave it up. Ugh. I guess you will just have to trust me. :) :)

@timmet,
Actually, I totally agree with you, but there is something about the blatant violence towards women in this game that is a little disconcerting. I just think that aspect alone would raise a million red flags today.

I remember that game vividly, and was taken aback with how truly violent it was. But, that didn't turn me into a serial killer (the media did a good job of that.. j/k). The violence in video games argument has gotten so tiresome, because neither side will ever agree.

Oh, and on a side note, whatever happened to the second Phantasmagoria (Puzzle of Flesh)? Didn't it take place in an office building? I can't find it locally, and I'm too lazy to hunt it down online.

what No love for the second one? Puzzle of the Flesh did not hold back either. I actually played the second one first and I have to say at the time... it scared the crap out of me. I actually avoided all mirrors for a week because of it(those who have played it should no what I mean) and it even had a S&M club as one of the locations. it was split up perfectly across 5(or was it 6?) disks and you would always know it was time for the next disk because you would get laid and that would be the end of the disk. I think the second one was better and but there wasn't nonsensical violence at women which wouldn't have made your point very well but come on at least mention it

It's tragic that it'd never be released today. Thing is, it's very tame compared to say, Peter Jackson's early films or the work of Takeshi Miike, and yet those works are freely available to buy. It's grimly amusing to think that this wouldn't be released today, even though it was out in stores and available at one point. Very sad indeed.

Actually, the rape in the game was more of a hilarious demonic dry humping. But still, the fact that they had an implied rape in the game was pretty controversial at the time.

Anyway, glad you guys are diggin' the Phantasmagoria videos! So good to see people appreciating that game after all these years... on Halloween no less!

perhaps its the helpless nature of the girls. the seemingly undeserving nature of their deaths or the disjointed cold cut presentation of each clip, but I honestly had to look away. gore, blood, death I can handle that with PURPOSE, senseless violence will always leave a sour taste in my mouth...but at least it doesn't taste like scrambled brains.

Yeah, this is fantastic. I really got a little queasy during the funnel bit, that was the only thing that I thought crossed any kind of line.

But honestly, and not to sound repetitive, but this looks no worse than today's more gory movies (the Saws as a "good" example) but it would probably not make it through the ratings board with anything less than an AO which would kill it.

I'm not sure if I would play it, I'm not too into the gory as a way to get my kicks. I'm more into the slightly creepy/thinking horror movies/games. Give me Gabriel Knight 1 and 2 any day over this.
