While the iPhone and iPod Touch excel at slower paced, touchscreen-based puzzle games, the lack of buttons makes you wonder why anyone would even bother with game emulation for the platform. I guess a Nintendo Entertainment System emulator could be something fun to have on your iPhone, but I wouldn't expect too much from a PlayStation emulator.

If you just have to have PlayStation emulation on your iPhone/iPod Touch, you can try the newly released psx4iphone emulator, currently at version 0.1.0. The installation is a bit of an undertaking, but when it's done you'll get to play your favorite PSX titles in miniature. With no buttons.

This is pretty cool as a proof of concept, but the devices aren't cut out for gaming goodness. The framerates are very low for most games, and analog control just isn't going to happen. These devices are large enough to fit some disc images, but that would cut into to their video/audio storage room.

I'd say save yourself the headache. Get a PSP instead.

Uh-oh! Don't you fellas tell any of the Apple kids that their device isn't cut out for console emulation - the majority of the internet's 12-16 year old Apple forum members, playing NES, GBA, and PSX on the iPhone or Touch is just smashing, and how dare you speak ill of it!

...

.... Yeah, I hate them too.

Exactly. I have my PSP set up to do... well everything I want gaming wise.. I can play every system from NES on up to PS1 (No Saturn support is shameful.), Including handhelds up through GBA.

I just... don't see the point in this. It's tiny and it has no real buttons. Just the touch screen.

Um. Bully for them I guess... I'd rather play with a real controller type thing.

Every time I see a kid excited about PSP emulation on the iPhone I want to stab them repeatedly. I guess people will do anything to be cool nowadays, including being able to play a game on useless crap.

Theres quite a few Open Source DS Emulator work started around the net, why wouldn't anyone try there hand at a DS iphone emulator - besides the obvious that Nintendo would eat you and your loved ones for dinner.

Honestly - gentlemen, and lady developers - i phone ds would be pretty insane... actually .. maybe it wouldnt work so well

I believe zodttd did it as more of a proof of concept, rather than trying to get anywhere need full speed, just like when he did playstation and gba emulators for the gp2x, it's more of a case of pushing the hardware rather than being able to use it as an handheld.

It really does seem like the reasoning for projects like this on the iPhone is simply "Because we can" - which is great, you know, if you're looking to go to war in Iraq or something along those lines - but folks who know better wouldn't waste their time or energy.

And just how am I to play Einhander without the ability to press more than one button at once?

Just use your PSP and PS3 to do Remote Play, quite possibly the coolest new feature from the Sony crew.

I don;t get the purpose in doing this with the controls- but if you made a DS emulator it could be really cool since there is a touchscreen on the unit- still no buttons though

My PSP has perfect emulation of the PSX. Playing MGS 1 on my PSP is just lovely. Resident Evil 2 on my PSP is the best thing ever.

Well being someone that has an Itouch, its not so bad. The nes emulator works great... those of you complaining about the lack of actual buttons... it has a multi touch screen. picture a nes controller with the screen in the middle. It's just neat and a good way to waste some time, I am not saying its better then the psp for emulation but it does the trick.

the NES one is fine. A friend of mine has it but you know, all that emulating the Itouch can do, the PSP can do for less money and better. (wow...what the hell did I just say?)

Lol, you had to know the fanboys would make their way in eventually.

I also have a touch and will say beyond a shadow of a doubt that the emulators are not even remotely close to "fine" - they are truly horrendous in every sense of the word.

There is absolutely no good reason for trying this kind of emulation on the touch - in fact, the only reason to do it is "Because we can" - a shit reason for anything.
