The two games that won't ever die come together through a little hackery. Cloud Strife, the spiky haired hero of Square Enix RPG Final Fantasy VII, has been inserted into Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Buster Sword and all. Cool idea, I guess, but the modders must have made sure Cloud had his Generic Materia equipped as it looks like Cloud is wearing a tight-fitting Janitor's worksuit. You can see him in action in the video above?
Me? I've got no opinion. I'll let a commenter from Game Videos do the work:
It's just a slightly modified Ike, and it really doesn't even look like Cloud. Frankly, I don't know why modders waste their time make such lame changes to the game. If you're going to go to all the effort to change the game, then actually do something good.
And, after being scolded by another commenter:
No crap I couldn't do it. That's hardly the point. The point is why bother wasting so much time on something that's this lame or half assed. There are plenty of things that I can do extremely well, but I don't waste my time and talents doing stupid things.

This is just the surface of the Brawl hacking community. I myself play Smash competitively, but the depth to the mods people have been making for Brawl over its lifetime are nothing short of astounding.
It really doesn't look that bad, but why the hell are they using Sephiroth's One Winged Angel theme for the video? It's kind of pointless without Sephiroth himself.
Because it's only a test. Model importing in Brawl is only just starting, and this only just Ike with different MDL0 files. Plus, if people want to do Cloud, it's there choice to do Cloud - there's no 'right' way to do things, in this case at least.
Plus, there's another team of people working on TvC Zero, reworked animations and all.
...I don't understand why this is news. There are hundreds of different reskins for Brawl that make characters look completely different. Much like this one. There's Nana and Popo as Black and White Mages, Ness as Mega Man, Capt. Falcon as Protoman, etc. Hey look! http://stacksmash.kontek.net/?p=10863 Capt. Falcon as Commander Shepard!
If you can hack a 3D model into a game, why can't you change the 2D text and picture of the character the 3D model is replacing so that it matches the new 3D model?
I think it'd be great if Nintendo did alternate costumes like this as DLC, but that'll never happen.
Why can't Final Fantasy fans stop gushing about One-Winged Angel? I swear, it's right up there with the theme to the Legend of Zelda in having way too many completely unnecessary and embarrassing rock remixes.
Most actual hackers would give this definition for themselves: Someone who thinks outside the norm or someone who will look at something and think of how to make it better…, hacked puzzle games … trying to get things to work in ways that no one’s ever thought of before. Notice it's much different then the mainstream definition and can fit the term "modder" very nicely. Most would consider modding the "grey hat" party of hackers.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
It's free, and optional.

Squall's got a texture.
Amazing. I mention a character and YouTube actually has a video of it. Clearly, this is Dissidia's fault.
Okay, I'm going to push it ask for Pyramid Head.

Evidently you do.

Anyways, I've already downloaded the skin, and it's schweet (although the hair's a bit funky, even for Cloud). Can't wait for the moveset hack. :D
But I'd be down to try it.
