...What? It's only OK to try to foist political viewpoints on people you disagree with?
@123ericn
It could work but knowing most of Halo's fanbase (not all because I like Halo) this would not go over as well as if Nathan Drake turned out to be gay from experince it seems that the Uncharted community would be more open minded about homosexuality.
Anyway I thought about this topic a lot after you linked to the article on Twitter and while I agree with the author's sentiments, I think there is a very thin line to aware of here. Making Drake gay could be a huge step, but it could also been seen as pandering to the LGBT crowd. You're mentioning of Dumbledor is a perfect example of that. Rowling tossed it out there and while it caused a lot of discussion and shed a slightly different light on a couple things from Deathly Hallows it was all together pointless. It wasn't done in context of the story and it felt cheap. Even if it was done in the story itself it probably would have felt cheap because what is the story reason for revealing it? And that is what I see as the big kicker for for Drake or any game that chooses to approach the subject. It can't just come out of left field, there has to be some meaning for it to come out and it has to make perfect sense. If Uncharted 4 opens with Drake naked in bed with another dude it would feel cheap. Creating a situation where they are simply pandering to one group or another wouldn't make anyone happy and would drastically undermine the character and the entire franchise.
...How does any of that make sense? How is a character coming out of the closet a 'political view point'?
You can look at the animal kingdom and see that gay partnerships are practically non existent. Animals aren't subject to confusion of sexual orientation.
I loathe any hint of such behavior in a game. It's the same reason I don't watch gay television programs that support the idea. Too many weak sheep being led to the gay alter of sacrificial testicles.
Gay men deserve to be called cupcakes IMO.
Keep gaydom out of games.
As was mentioned earlier, I'm not sure how impactful it would be to reveal this after the end of the trilogy, but it's a great idea. I'd trust Amy Hennig and co. to make it work.
Actually, my first thought after reading the original article when Jim linked to it on Twitter was "Hey, what if Joel from The Last Of Us was gay?" I think if anyone could pull it off, it'd be Naughty Dog. They'd make him just a normal guy instead of some offensive stereotype, which I think is the big worry in this kind of situation.
I think Naughty Dog would do an awesome job.
can you picture it? First AA game news site to include a top editor that's gay?
"How the hell has being gay become a fashion? It's a social disease like alcoholism that needs treatment."
For your sake, I hope that is trolling, because that's definitely one of the dumbest things I've ever read.
So I started thinking, I can recall a few video game lesbians here and there, but do we actually have any gay video game protagonists?
Videogames.
You're so wrong it's not even amusing. You are on the internet. Use it you antiquated fuckstain.
Let's have cool gay characters. But let's not get lazy about it and just stamp "now a gay, despite clearly not before" on existing characters.
"You can look at the animal kingdom and see that gay partnerships are practically non existent. Animals aren't subject to confusion of sexual orientation."
Oh for fuck's sake. You've obviously never even looked for information on homosexuality in animals, because if you had typed "homosexuality in animals" into a Google search, this would be the first article that pops up:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexual_behavior_in_animals
Here's a quote from the first paragraph, because apparently reading up on an issue is something that's difficult for you:
"Current research indicates that various forms of same-sex sexual behavior are found throughout the animal kingdom.[5] A new review made in 2009 of existing research showed that same-sex behavior is a nearly universal phenomenon in the animal kingdom, common across species.[6]"
I sincerely hope that one aspect of who you are becomes unacceptable to a group of close minded people someday, then maybe you'll see how ridiculous you sounded when you regurgitated this nonsense you heard from the anti-gay crowd.
I'd rather see a character be introduced as gay rather then being outed 'on camera' as it were. It's an incredibly difficult thing to write and I can't think of any working games writers who would handle it right.
I haven't even seen a TV show or Movie handle an outing respectfully, so games still have a while to go before they get there. If anyone can recommend a film/show that did it right, let me know.
While I understand that Destructoid is an alternative to mainstream muck and I rather enjoy the swearing, drinking, dick & fart jokes proudly on display this however, just comes off as nieve at best.
Maybe I'm taking this too seriously and ignoring any tiny shred of creditable thought provoking material in this article but being gay isn't something that should be promoted as a label OR choice!
"Turning" a character gay because of any hip/cool/in-crowd reason is just beyond mindblowing stupid and pointless.
I'd suggest Jim, you get out from behind the monitor and stop playing games and go experience some real life. You're missing out, clearly!

I'm sorry to say, as with each time someone objects to changing the main character of an established series to anything slightly askew from the norm, what you just commented affirms your privilege.
You might think gender, ethnicity or sexuality has no place intruding on established characters, but it's easy to think that when the vast majority of game protagonists are catered to your likeness. Assuming of course that youre a straight white male. Speaking personally, I'm sick of how straight white and male very much seems to be the default.
@Jim
Great article, I particularly like the reference to Snake's amazingly pert ass.
I don't have anything against anyone. If you don't slap me in the face with your beliefs I wouldn't care if you were black, white, asian, gay, or whatever. The second you start forcing something onto anyone else is when I attack.
Granted there isn't any gay characters in gaming, and extremely few heroines (especially now with what Ninja Team did to Samus, bastards.) But forcing an iconic character like Drake to be gay just comes off as pandering and an attempt to sound more "open," much like what J.K. Rowling did as pointed out above.
If whoever does the next Uncharted decides to make a new gay character who hits on Drake or something, fine. That'll probably do the last point Mr. Sterling has. (which is an amazing point btw, love it when stuff like that infuriates people, like making the new Spiderman black made hilarius reactions)
tl;dr: It wouldn't mean anything if every character was a minority somehow. That's why they're MINORITIES. Drake is already established, if you want to make someone gay make a new character.
...In all seriousness, I think the fact that a bunch of homophobic gamers would be exposed to such a shocking revelation would be great! Because like you said, they'd realize that Nathan Drake is still a cool, badass guy, and that doesn't change just because he's gay.
As a gay man myself, I think it'd be amazing if something like that were to happen. Open up the minds of gamers just a little bit more. And for those who resist, at least it'd be like a giant trollface to them.
"You can look at the animal kingdom and see that gay partnerships are practically non existent. Animals aren't subject to confusion of sexual orientation."
You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
@omicron1
"What? It's only OK to try to foist political viewpoints on people you disagree with?"
Um, duh. Why in Sagan's name would you ever argue with people you already agree with??
It would be hella' interesting and a huge step forward for not only the gaming community, but gaming as a whole. Although I think it'd be more interesting to see characters that are just gay, not characters that are gay to make a point.
As a fan of Uncharted, I would love this.
Truly, as a heterosexual, I think it could be super-interesting if done properly.
I'm not sure if you're intentionally being obtuse, but you must know this (or a case like this) has no chance of ever happening. Not for a very long time.
The discouraging thing is, even though a lot of people say they would be cool with it, they wouldn't be.
In Uncharted, much like any action movie, there is *always* a love-interest/sexual tension subplot. It's sad, but you'd have to be out of your gourd to think the young, ignorant masses would tolerate Drake flirting with another man, or (gasp) kissing a man.
The type of escapism that videogames are increasingly enabling people to enjoy involves identifying with the main characters to a much larger extent than even 5-10 year ago. I hate being a cynic sometimes, but I actually believe most people are *that* homophobic.
I wish I was wrong...
The idea isn't that he just TURNS gay, it's more of a realisation he actually IS gay. There have being so many people, famous and otherwise, who stayed in the closet for many years to then emerge and openly confess it. Sometimes it's even a confession to themselves, like the one Drake would have. I don't see how anyone is pointing to a choice here to be honest, maybe you interpreted the article in a wrong way?
Also, is gay cool now? I really don't know, I'm from Belgium and we've got a gay, Italian immigrant prime minister since a few weeks and we don't give a fuck. I presume the taboo in America is still hold in place with the blind religion thing.
OT: I can't help it but Drake is a gay character to me now, cannon or not, it just fits.
There are all types of historical things. Just because you don't hear about it in school doesn't mean it wasn't historical. For example Gershwin's Opera Porgy and Bess was not only iconic for being the first successful American opera but it featured an All Black main cast.
Samus being a woman WAS historic. Celebrity figures coming out openly for the first time was historic. Video games have yet to move out into that region. Video games are still criticized for being mainly gruffy white guys. Nothing wrong with that, but if there can be gay super heroes there can be gay video game characters. And the VG industry is the fastest growing and one of the largest entertainment industries right now. Now is the perfect time to make that impact what with all of these politicians still arguing over what seems to be a religious issue.
I may as well explicitly state how disgusted I am by people who describe things they dislike as "gay". It's extremely demeaning.
"How the hell has being gay become a fashion? It's a social disease like alcoholism that needs treatment."
The EXACT same thing could be said about religious zealots and idiots. So hey, you could have a session together! Maybe you'd find out that you're gay too! Oh wouldn't that be the greatest irony?
Other than that, good to go IMO. Elena and Drake could still be close friends, and it'd be great drama to see how everyone dealt with it.
I mean, when you think about it we don’t know if half our favourite characters are straight either.
But yeah, I think we all agree that there could be more gay characters in games, but I bet it’s hard to strike a balance having it be an important part of that character and having a gay character for the sake of it – you don’t want their entire being to be about being gay but you don’t want to treat it as something completely irrelevant either.
"I mean, when you think about it we don’t know if half our favourite characters are straight either."
Fantastic point. Ryu and Ken could be gay.
Judas is an example of what is wrong with this world. I bet he doesn't believe in evolution and thinks genes are a fabrication of the lies that we call science.
Not everything the bible said is true dude. It is meant to -guide- your thoughts not teach you your thoughts. Hence stoning your children is NOT alright if they are disobedient likewise it is NOT alright to call someone an abomination simply due to their sexual preference. (Which fortunately does not harm children, except pedophilia of course.")
