Why Nathan Drake would make a fantastic homosexual photo

I was reading this very nice article on Gamasutra about the dearth of legitimate homosexual characters in videogames, and was particularly struck by writer Andrew Meade's suggestion at the end -- make Nathan Drake gay. Now, before you laugh that suggestion off as little more than a silly bit of joking, I would like to state that I agree with Meade -- and I am deathly serious about it.

I am fully aware that the Uncharted series is Naughty Dog's property, and that Nathan Drake is its creation. I would never dream of telling a developer what to do with its character, demanding that it should do something simply because it would make me feel personally vindicated. However, I would like to suggest that Nathan Drake would benefit from coming out of the closet, for a number of good reasons.

It makes sense from a story perspective

As Andrew Meade himself pointed out, the story of a man struggling with his sexual identity would suit the established character of Nathan Drake to a tee. Here we have a man who can't forge a lasting, meaningful relationship with a woman and acts like a dick most of the time. These things would be perfectly explained by making Nathan insecure about his sexuality and attempting to come to terms with it.

Not to mention, such sexual frustration would explain the compulsion to travel the world looking for treasure, putting his life at risk for trinkets and baubles. The sheer amount of physical exertion and mortal danger that Drake subjects himself to could very well be the result of a man torn up by internal conflict.

And, not to sound too gauche, but it would kind of explain the relationship with Sully. That man's too old for Nathan to just "hang out" with.

It would blow Dumbledore out of the water

When J.K Rowling said Dumbledore was gay, it was cute, but it felt a little too much like pandering after the fact. The Harry Potter series was done by then, Rowling made out with her fat loot and wasn't too worried about losing popularity, so it was an easy thing to just randomly pick a character to be gay for some brownie points. It took no effort and required no writing. Easy win.

If Naughty Dog were to have Drake come out in-game, that would become legend. Naughty Dog would secure itself a place in history that I guarantee will be looked in with favor by our socially superior descendants, earning applause for becoming the first Triple-A game to feature an openly gay protagonist -- one who was actually fleshed out and affable, rather than a two-dimensional camp stereotype.

We still talk about the iconic swerve of the Metroid series, when it turned out Samus Aran was a woman. It demonstrated that gender needn't be a barrier to the creation of a strong videogame protagonist, and I like to think that a few kids at the time actually opened their minds a little bit, and changed their perception of gender in fiction. That can happen again, and it would be glorious.

I have little doubt that, one day, a game will be brave enough to do it. Naughty Dog could have that game.

It could potentially change attitudes

While I am sure a fair few idiotic gamers would be grossed out by the idea of Nathan being gay, I am also certain that a lot of them would think, "Hey, Nathan Drake is gay, but that has not changed what kind of character he is, or why I like him." As I stated before, Samus Aran opened minds up once before, so surprising us with Nathan's sexuality could make that sweet lightning strike twice. It would make a real statement that gay characters can be heroic, interesting, funny protagonists as well. Being gay doesn't stop Nathan being all the other things you liked about him. I think that would be a superb message to send to fans.

Perhaps I am still just a little too optimistic about people, but I like to think that folk who are scared or hateful about the subject of homosexuality simply don't realize that being gay doesn't change who a person is, or are learning secondhand information about LGBT people from outdated, poorly translated, often misrepresented doctrines. Nathan could be a good conduit through which a little education might flow.

It wouldn't hurt Naughty Dog

Gamers have demonstrated that very little can stop them buying games. EA can screw customers over with online passes, make them jump through hoops with extraneous extra services, and charge obscene amounts of money for DLC, but people still buy its products. Bobby Kotick could strangle a puppy with his bare hands, but Call of Duty would sell gangbusters regardless. The Uncharted series is massively popular among PS3 fans, and the gameplay is something they're hooked on. I do not think having Drake come out would dramatically alter that.

When you remember that videogame boycotts usually fail miserably, and that people who promise not to buy a company's game end up buying it anyway, this is one situation where the spinelessness and slavish devotion of the gamer community can be used for good instead of evil.

Few studios have the power Naughty Dog has. Few games ever become popular enough to inspire guaranteed loyalty and are therefore in a position where they could get away with something like this and have it be a riskless gamble. It is not Naughty Dog's responsibility, nor its obligation, but since it has the power, it would certainly be awesome to utilize it.

It would mess up the minds of genuinely homophobic gamers

Okay, the last point is petty and vindictive, but why not? Those PS3 gamers who genuinely hate gay people but love Uncharted would be mentally torn to shreds by the idea that one of their favorite game heroes was a "fag." Perhaps some would grudgingly start to admit that Nathan's still cool. Others might just have a mental breakdown and post ridiculous, poorly spelled tirades on GameFAQs, but it would be terrific to witness either way.

I bet the most insecure ones would even start to question themselves and wonder why they liked Nathan so much. I mean, they've just spent three games staring directly into the ass of a gay man for hours at a time, cooing over the PS3's impressive graphics as Nathan's shirt gets all wet and clings to his toned, glistening torso.

Why were you looking at Nathan that way? Did you feel it? Just a little pulse ripple along your shaft? Just the once? Did you? You can't be sure, can you? What does it mean if you did? If Nathan Drake just started stroking your face, would you stop him? Would you close your eyes? Oh God, you don't know. Why don't you know what you'd do? Why does it feel like Old Snake's wearing nothing at all? Nothing at all? What are you going to tell Mom and Dad now?

At least, that's what I'd like to think they'd be saying to themselves.

Poor Nathan, no need to hide in this day and age, love. ^_^

You know, I was seriously hoping that Marcus and Dom would open up and confess their love for one another at some point in the Gears of War series.

And then the third game's campaign came out and was utterly disappointing on all levels (but mostly on the man-love).

A better explanation is Nathan Drake is the Joker(shoots someone, cracks bad joke, continues shooting people), but Nathan Drake is homosexual might be better on licensing rights.

I think this would be great for games. I'd love to see someone tackle having an openly gay main charachter. especially one that isnt flamboyant and offensive. Doctor who and Torchwood did a great job with Jack. it wasnt something that was a big deal. he just hit on dudes every once and a while. I think naughty dog is one of the only companies that could write a character well enough for it to work. heres hoping the guy in the last of us likes dudes.

Wonderful editorial, and I agree 100%. They wouldn't have to change the game or gameplay at all, and videogaming as a whole would finally leap forward into the 21st century. Do it, Naughty Dog!

lol "deathly serious" about making a game character gay.
I think Jim Sterling would make a fantastic homosexual.
Also, it wouldnt "MAKE HISTORY RAGHBARGLOHMYGOD" like you claim, it would just be a pointless addition to the story. It wouldnt change anything, or make amazing leaps or bounds, because to be honest, its 2011, and I would hope most people don't care who or what you are fucking to the point it doesn't change the over all story.

No one sat down after beating metroid and said HURR A GIRL DIS SUCKS" some people said "sweet" while others looked for the Justin Bailey code. This is way of base Jim, so much so that I'm actually shocked you would write something so asinine. And that's coming from someone who reads your shit on a daily basis.

This article... holy fuck Jim. Come on.

The bottom line is the vast majority of male gamers would be threatened by idea of a strong homosexual protagonist. And if I'm perfectly honest, part of me is uncomfortable with the idea as well. That's not to say that a group of people comprising almost entirely of teenage boys should be allowed to dictate the progression of the art-form, though sadly that is more or less the case.

I look forward to seeing the sexual tension building between nathan and sully in the next instalment of uncharted, at any rate.

O.o It wouldn't make sense to me from a story perspective. Although i've only played uncharted 2, it seems he just has general insecurities, gay is pretty big leap. If he was angry all the time sure, or personally attacked others maybe. Saying sully's too old to be just "hanging out" with is also a pretty big leap. And why do something like that just for shock value? Nathan drake didn't seem gay to me at all.

I don't know honestly, while it would be a good milestone for a triple A game to deal with homosexuality, I don't think Nathan Drake is the correct envoy for this. After 3 games and not even a hint of why he could be a homosexual (beyond the rather forced points you mentioned, I believe it would likely feel forced rather than thought provoking, especially considering the Uncharted games have relied more on Hollywood story telling elements rather than thought provoking or engaging narratives. Although I will agree that I want to see homophobic PS3 owners squirm, but one petty and vindictive good reason for the change is not enough to persuade me that Nathan Drake is the correct character for this discussion. I would definitely like to see this discussion on homosexuality happen, but I just don't feel that Uncharted is the correct series for this.

free touch: The fact it wouldn't change anything in terms of narrative or gameplay is what I love most about the idea. It would fit right in and provide the perfect compliment to what's already established about Drake's persona.

And say what you will about its historical impact, people still talk about the Metroid reveal, and people still talk about Samus as one of the few decent female protagonists in games. Metroid IS historically notable for that fact.

Anyway, sorry you disagree, and apparently so viciously too.

he does have pretty great hair (with highlights in it too!), an expertly groomed perma 5 o'clock shadow, and is physically fit in the way that only gay guys get from going to the 5x a week and dancing all night in trendy clubs.

nathan drake = gay. confirmed.

I agree with this, and it would help redeem the misstep Uncharted 3 took. I also think that Sora from Kingdom Hearts would make a great gay, their was that point in KH II where he reunited with Kairi and Riku and he completely ignores Kairi to hold Riku's hand and cry. It'd make sense and it'd be pretty cool for Square and Disney to have an openly gay character.

Though I think you're being abit too optimistic here (did I really say that to Jim Sterling) It would be cool, but I don't think it would cause major shock-waves. It would just be a neat character addition.

The only thing I wouldn't care for is if they just made him a gay stereotype like what we always tend to see elsewhere. It just seems that too often, when someone is depicted as being a gay character, it has to be in the form of some "hilarious" stereotype with exaggerated hand gestures, lisping, and so on.

Just remember, there have been many gay people who started out as "straight" people, publicly, hence the term closeted. Once they come out, it's almost a cliche' at this point for those who knew the person to say, "Well, it makes sense in hindsight."

If Nathan Drake came out, it would, at least to me, make plenty of sense in hindsight.

I agree that this could have the same boundary shattering affects that Metroid had years ago. My only concern would be Naughty Dog's portrayal of Nathan after he comes out. If he started hitting on every guy he sees or makes any comment about some guy attacking him being 'super cute!', then they would totally undermine their effort to show that him being gay doesn't really change who he is as a person. I think that after he comes out if he still tried hitting on woman (maybe more awkwardly) and he started growing close to some guy (possibly Sully but probably not). Also, I think that if Sully wasuncomfortable with his friends coming out but quickly grows to accept it and see it as a change that makes Nathan happier then that would further emphasize the idea that being gay doesn't really change who you are.

@123ericn, It doesn't really work the same because Chief doesn't have much of a personality in the games. It'd be the same if Mario was gay it wouldn't mean anything. The reason it works with Nathan is because it actually fits his character and could add a bit of depth to his personality.

I like this article.

I would like a game to tackle the first point about the possibility of his homosexuality alone. I haven't played the series that much, but the thought of establishing a character in such a way and then maybe in a 3rd-4th game the character comes out would be great. It would come off pretty natural.

Eh, I don't think it'd work. All we really know about Nathan's past relationships is with two women. One of which he apparently married, and the other left him because he was still in love with the one. Nothing in any of the Uncharted games points at him being gay or potentially being gay. After three games (and apparently six years within the Uncharted world), it would be kind of weird for Naughty Dog to suddenly say "Oh yeah, he's gay." from a narrative stand point.
