Why do videogame movies fail so much? photo

I was reading the latest issue of Edge magazine which had an article about Hollywood's recent preoccupation with turning videogames into films. It talked about the reasons that movie makers have for picking games as their new cash cow, and lightly touched on the number of creative and commercial flops that have occurred as a result.

What the article did not do is discuss why, exactly, these game-based movies are so bad. It's a question that has been asked by ourselves before, but one that Hollywood doesn't seem keen on thinking about as it spews out yet another licensed film into the slavering maws of cynical critics and despondent  gamers alike.

So why then, are videogame movies so bad? Are they simply the product of sub-par creators, or is there something deeper that we're missing? Can game movies ever please both mainstream audiences and the hardcore fans at once? Hit the jump as we dissect exactly why videogame movies fail so much.

The next two years are going to see a shocking amount of videogame movies appearing on the big screen (or straight to DVD in some cases). More than ever before, Hollywood is attempting to recreate the success of comic book adaptations such as Spiderman and Batman with gaming. Edge listed the full set of upcoming films that are due for release between now and the end of 2010. The amount is staggering, and the movies are as follows:

Alice, Alone in the Dark II, Area 51, Bloodrayne III, Castlevania, City of Heroes, Driver, Everquest, Gears of War, Getting Up, God of War, Joust, Kane & Lynch, Max Payne, Metal Gear Solid, Mortal Kombat Devastation, Onimusha, Postal, Prince of Persia, The Sims, Spy Hunter, Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li and World of Warcraft.

For an average hardcore gamer who often greets the announcement of a new game movie with groans and the slapping of foreheads, this is a huge list of fail. While one can't predict the future, a betting man would be wise to place money on the vast majority of the above listed films being little more than throwaway disappointments.

As videogames evolve in terms of writing, character development and artistic merit, it is unsurprising that film directors view them as a rich goldmine of free creativity, as well as a chance to latch onto a known name for monetary purposes. That said, directors completely miss the true meaning of the artistic evolution of gaming -- that they render movies obsolete. This is the first grave mistake that videogame movies now make. Back in the day, it was somewhat easy to make up a brainless kung fu film, throw Scorpion in it and call the thing Mortal Kombat. These days however, as videogames match or even surpass movies with their narrative, it becomes increasingly more difficult to justify a movie adaptation.

What's the point in making a Metal Gear Solid movie? MGS games are, in and of themselves, movie-like experiences in their own right. Obvious jokes about lengthy cutscenes aside, there's a reason why Hideo Kojima is often referred to as the Steven Spielberg of videogames -- it's that his epic titles boast the rich narrative, classy cinematography and quality acting that you could find in any film. Some games even tie their narrative to the gameplay -- for example, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time had a wonderful way of weaving dialogs and monologues into the game as it was being played, something that will be totally lost in the movie.

Videogames are indeed a source of creativity, but in their own right, and they need no other medium to tap their potential. Films are not only unjustified in some instances, but completely unnecessary.

Turning that idea on its head, a game that doesn't contain any interesting storytelling such as Gears of War is popular because of gameplay. Barely anyone cares about the less-than-stellar tale of Marcus Fenix's war against The Locust more than they care about chainsawing someone in half over Xbox Live. Stripping away a game like Gears to just its story does not capture the appeal that movie directors are attempting to bottle.

This brings us neatly to the point of interactivity, and one of the biggest reasons why videogame movies simply don't work. When you adapt a book into a film, you are adding something -- a visual element and aural element. When you adapt a play, you are adding big budget production values and camera work. With videogames, which have become a new breed of cinema in their own right, what exactly do you add? In truth, unlike books and plays, you actually take away the most important element -- the interactivity.

Unlike movies that add new things to books and plays, a videogame movie can do nothing but strip away a vital part of the gaming experience. The importance of this cannot be emphasized enough. In the Silent Hill movie, for instance, I can't deny that I got goosebumps as Pyramid Head made his celluloid debut (illogical appearance aside). What I sadly can't say he inspired though, is fear. Sure, I got a brief fanboy kick from his cameo, but where was the chilling sense of outright dread that I got from his appearances throughout Silent Hill 2? The simple fact of the matter is that this Pyramid Head, unlike the one I first met years ago, was not coming for me. In times past, it was I who Pyramid Head was stalking, chasing me down dark, winding alleys and pushing me off the roof of Brookhaven Hospital. The Pyramid Head of Hollywood, however, was not scary. He was not MY nemesis, as he had always been in the past. He was chasing someone else, someone I didn't care about. He was no longer scary.

Another interesting point is the fact that videogame movies tend to be live action. This is interesting because as games have improved in terms of storytelling, so too have they developed in terms of acting. Returning to Metal Gear Solid, after years of recognizing the incomporable David Hayter as Solid Snake, we are expected to buy the proposal of Christian Bale as his replacement. How would you feel if a new Star Wars movie was released but Han Solo was played by Christian Slater instead of Harrison Ford? I am willing to bet that you would not accept it. Why? Because Harrison Ford IS Han Solo. In the same way that Ford IS Solo, Hayter IS Snake. 

In a live action movie, it's impossible to get this right. For example, should a BioShock film ever truly be made, who plays Andrew Ryan? Armin Shimerman provided Ryan's voice absolutely perfectly and the infamous "sweat of his brow" speech from any other mouth would be wrong. However, Shimerman also looks nothing like the character he portrayed. It simply does not work for anything other than two dimensional characters who are not memorable for their voices, or who have different voice actors in every game they appear in. 

The truth is, videogames neither need nor should be adapted into movies. Doing so somehow implies that games aren't capable of telling good stories on their own, and that's false. Will videogame movies ever work? There have been some successes -- the Tomb Raider films have done well, and there are always certain movies that become good through how laughably terrible they are -- but the potential for success, in my mind, is limited at best.

One thing videogame movies certainly won't do is please everyone, especially the gamer crowd. Videogame movies don't appeal to gamers because the artistic license taken with them often means the original game is altered so much it might as well be about something else. In fact, so many movies based on games are little more than original ideas with a brand name slapped on that they might as well have been unlicensed IPs from the beginning.

But of course, where's the money in being original with movies?

Hmm Some might argue that the Super Mario Brothers Movie wasn't a failure but a triumph of cinematic brilliance....course they would be wrong but I can remember someone saything that.

Street Fighter didn't fail, it was so cheesy that it was good.

Also, they fail because most of the time Uwe Boll has touched it or because whoever is in charge of it, doesn't know shit about the game.

Silent Hill was also not a fail. Resident Evil was pretty good too.

Simple, they don't follow the content of the game. You know the stuff that makes the game good. What fans hold near and dear to their heart. Yeah well the movie studio decides to fuck with that and reimagine what they think the movie version of our favorite game should be like. So you get a piece of shit movie and angry gamers, not to mention a flop at the box office.

Videogame movies suck because the people involved in bringing them to the big-screen don't understand what makes them great in the first place They just see them as an opportunity to appeal to our demographic, and don't seem to mind butchering everything we love about them in the process.

Hollywood came to dread realization long ago that they could make money by giving us "same man, different haircut". We can't save videogames from that. There's something about a dramatization of a novel - perhaps the artistic intent, perhaps the fact that if Paramount had fucked up the Great Gatsby movie, F. Scott Fitzgerald's drunken ghost would eat their firstborn children - that Hollywood respects, and shies away from. Nobody gives a shit about videogames: to them, a videogame has never been made which champions artistry, character, message, passion. We're still trapped, screaming, in the shadow of Pac-Man and Dig-Dug. I think it will eventually happen - studio executives will realized that they're hamstringing us like still artists and novelists hamstringed them back in the day. It may, finally, occur the them that we've passed beyond the shallow whistle of Space Invaders and Pong and progressed into an era of true, genuine artistic merit. When video games bring forward a Rembrandt, then we'll have it. We just have to wait. Like all things, we just have to wait .

I doesn't help that they choose games not necessarily known for their strong narratives. I mean Street Fighter, Mortal Combat, House of the Dead? If Hollywood picked better games for their films their success rate would increase exponentially.

Consider recent comic-based movies and why they were good.

Now, first off, they were just well written, well executed movies. I don't see Sam Raimi helming an adaptation of Lair anytime soon.

More importantly, comic superheroes experience many more setbacks, and sacrifice so much more to reach their goals. Those things are good narrative but don't necessarily translate into good gameplay.

And that is, in my mind, the central problem. Coming up with a good, successful comic book relies on creating good characters and a good story, things that are also required to make a good movie. Games don't require these things.

Now, you can certainly jam good characters and a good story into a game-based movie -- but it doesn't have the same resonance as does a comic book movie that realizes 60-year old lore.

Every movie I can date failed, except for the Mario Brothers (still own the original VHS copy :D)

Street Fighter
Doom
Silent Hill
Resident Evil (All of them)
Tomb Raider

Hmm what else? Too tired to think of any more but they have all been shite house.

What is better yet, is NOW Hollywood plan on ruining our beloved Anime. TWO Akira movies are coming out, Leonardo Di Caprio will be playing as Tetsuo and instead of NEW TOKYO like it is meant to be in, we have NEW MANHATTAN...

This should be a super-natural horror about a family that move into a house only to find that doorways and furniture inexplicable move or disappear. The inhabitants then freak oout pissing themselves and finally setting themselves on fire. A cameo role for jessica simpson where she is unable to get out of the pool when the ladder vanishes.

To me it's pretty simple. Even if you copied a video game script entirely for movie form, most video games contain some completely unbelievable aspects. For Metal Gear Solid games, the existence of Vamp or The Pain or Liquid-Ocelot would be too big a pill to swallow for most viewers, but it kind of fits in in the video game world. Imagine a war or spy movie where instead of fighting soldiers, they also fought a guy that floated in the air and read your mind, or a guy that shot bees out of his mouth. Hmm.

Other examples: portraying the ridiculous athleticism of Ninja Gaiden without excessive CGI (also they'd have to add a lot more dialogue, which is changing the game drastically)...actually, that in itself is a category like the Gears of War example above. Games driven by gameplay instead of story.

Sometimes the director in me would think "Wouldn't that be neat if they could successfully make a cool movie of Mega Man?" But to be a good movie, they'd have to add a lot of dialogue that simply doesn't exist in the Mega Man world. You can't have a movie of robots beating the crap out of each other all the time, right?

Or can you...?

The only game-related universe I would love to see turn into a movie would be Half-Life. Well, not exactly. My dream would be a 7 Hour War meets 24 mini-series in where you follow soldiers around the globe trying to fight and survive the Combine in real-time like 24.

Why do videogame movies suck? Horrible plot, horrible writing, horrible directing, horrible acting, horrible production values, horrible decision-making.

Seriously, I don't expect a gloriously epic movie but the overall effort put into video game movies up to this point is sub-par at best.

OK, my friend and I must be the only ones who thinks the Silent Hill movie wasn't a total fail. Sure the whole plot what near the end of horrible but director gets mad props from me for preserving the sheer creepiness of Silent Hill alive.

There's games I would like to see a movie adaption but only if thy manage not to make a total joke out of it a la Resident Evil. Don't just read the booklets inside the cover, play the game, get the feel of it, understand the story.. then consider a movie. And use something with substance, stay away from the arcade.

Video games moives are generally bad but moreso to the people who grew up playing thoes games. There were plenty people who liked the Tomb raider Movies but fans of the games hated it because, well I've never played tomb raider so I don't know what I'm talking about here.

Different example, I liked the Second RE movie (didn't like the first and havn't seen the third) but as a cool action movie, not as a different way of looking at resident evil. The only part that remotely reminded me of the RE games in that film was when the main character and the little girl are wandering the school and you see a few Zombies just mindlessly wandering around, that part reminded me of the RE games somehow. Then the rest was just BLAM BLAM BLAM KABOOM BLAM BLAM EXPLOSION STAAAAAAAARS!!!!!!!!!!!

If they want to make a film that does justice to the game they need to give the viewer that feeling they felt when they played the game. Like in the Gears of War movie, they should make any time a chainsaw is used on an alien as grusome an splattertastic as possible. Also it shouldn't happen too many times so it doesn't lose its novelty. Thjey could also use suspence to their advantege, maby Marcus could be wrestling the gun from someone, you think "use the chainsaw use the chainsaw", he pushed the locust back then VROOOOM SPLAAAAAAT!!! *standing ovation*

Maby people didn't like the Tomb raider movies becouse you couldn't zoom in on Laura's chest whenever you wanted to.

I feel like some of these movies may come out decent. You can't deny the Tomb Raider movies, while being technically not "game-related" outside the characters, were decent action movies. Same with Resident Evil (which the first one was pretty damn cool nomatterwhatthefuckyousay). Gears of War could be absolutely Epic - picture Children of Men with big ass fucking guns FTW. Long and short, if people could accept some of these movies as extensions of the games they love (like Ghostbusters will be an extension of the movies I fucking love) then we could succeed. Spiderman and the X-men movies, Batman, et al were good because we accepted them within the constantly changing spectrum of their comic worlds - so couldn't Final Fantasy technically make a great movie (which some of you will argue it did)?
We demand quality, they'll make game movies that are good.

One thing that wasn't touched on was the sometimes incredible condensing, or inflating, that has to happen to make an entire game fit into one 2-3 hour movie.

Turning Xenosaga into a movie would be like stuffing a Greyhound bus into a parking spot for a compact car, the only possible way to do it would be to cut parts out. On the other end of the pole, turning Mario Brothers into a movie required taking a game that had the smallest story, and stretching it wider than Paris Hilton's tunnel.

Either way it's going to show, even to someone who hasn't played the game behind the movie.

Jim I agree with you. The reason they suck is because movies take away the interacitivy you have with the game and it's characters, with a movie they take that away and it leaves you feeling somewhat empty.
