Who the hell is buying Dragon Quest IX? photo

[Japan correspondent 50ft. Samurai breaks down who is buying all of those Dragon Quest XI's.]

You’ve all read about how Dragon Quest IX has invaded Japan and is selling like the proverbial crack rock and really there’s no surprise there, even with its one save slot and RapeLay knock-offs. As Jim astutely pointed out: it’s Japan, it’s DS, it’s Dragon Quest. Exactly what kind of Japanese people, though, are shoveling up DQ IX? Does the fact it’s for the DS change anything? Are these people likely to buy any other games?

Wonder no longer! Thanks to Media Create (they of the weekly sales rankings) and a slice of their rich, creamy point-of-sale data collected on DQ IX’s launch weekend, we can learn exactly what we need to know.  A representative sample of 10,652 buyers were surveyed, some of them perhaps bribed with candy.

More after the break.

In short, the survey reveals this:

  • The ratio of male to female players is 83:17
  • 3/4 of buyers were between 20 and 30
  • Due to the demographics of the DS audience, DQ IX had more female buyers than the last game in the series.
  • Since DQ VIII was released 5 years ago, the age of buyers across the scale has increased by the same amount.
  • Buyers tended to buy Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy titles in the past.

Regarding the ratio of men to women, there’s nothing mind-blowing about the numbers, but what’s interesting is the increase in female users from DQ VIII to IX: 12.07% to 16.51%. This is due to the DS being a very female-friendly platform, so in that respect the game managed to attract some new blood.

We see some other interesting data concerning user age. Look at the chart below. The solid gold line represents the sales of Dragon Quest VIII across user ages 5 years ago. The bars represent the sales of DQ IX (blue for men, pink for women). The dotted line is the VIII age range moved ahead five years (because everyone is five years older) indicates that the same users of DQ VIII have aged five years and picked up DQ IX. It also indicates that sales have lowered for users under twenty-three. The game is selling well to the same people who bought it last time- but younger users now bought less than younger users did five years ago.

Finally, when polled about games they bought in the past, the top five games were either Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy titles with 22% of respondents saying they had bought the previous version and 16% saying they purchased Final Fantasy XII.

Other interesting tidbits? While the game continues to sell well to the 20-30 crowd, the percentage of sales by age taper off until the 50+ range, when they shoot back up. In fact, women over 50% constituted SIX percent of those surveyed. While 50+ is a much bigger age range, adding more likely buyers, it doesn’t change the fact that old ladies play more DQ than women of any other age.

Grandma apparently slays slimes with the best of them.

I believe the rise in females has more to do with an increase in female mothers and grandmothers purchasing Dragon Quest IX for their children/grandchildren. This might be an indicator of gaming saturating the mainstream in Japan.

I could be wrong and girls are just more inclined to the cutesy artstyle, but statistically it looks like the younger demographic still isn't purchasing the game in the numbers that the females of child bearing age are.

In other words I still think the gaming demographic is mainly male. While the consumer market is spreading to females.

The age of buyers isn't surprising, fans of the series had to wait 5 years for the sequel, so naturally the age of the buyers would be older.

That's pretty interesting- Dragon Quest is always regarded as a very old-school series, so it's no wonder that the audience is growing older. Unfortunately, that means that eventually they're going to run out of customers. Unless the developer can find a way to appeal to the younger generation, they're SOL once this generation kicks the bucket.

@Matthew Blake.
I agree, but only because this generation of gamers is an ungrateful fucktards who only play FPS games with uber graphics.

I got into Dragon Quest 9 years ago, when I was 11, thanks to Dragon Warrior Monsters.
I got my friends into it too. My friends obviously were growing up with Snes/Mega Drive to begin with and Playstation 1, a bit later. I would consider the original generation of Dragon Quest fans the first generation before me, and the Generation of Dragon Quest fans that I'm in the second Generation. I would consider people who got into DQ with DQ8 and/or the DS re-makes the Third and Final Gen of DQ fans.

Dragon Quest will not make new fans in this generation outside Japan simply because it requires effort.
It's not the type of Game that would give you a Trophy for completing each mission like Mirror's Edge or Dead Space. It's the type of game that would make you kill the Toughest Boss for a Bronze.

Oh, and the numbers when I first got into Dragon Quest above are only a rough estimate, it was around that time, but I'm way to lazy to try and figure out exact timings, Not much later, but not earlier.

@Aurain, you can't lose hope in the new games so soon. I had to watch little kids for a class in high school and you would be surprised just how hardcore some of those little ones are. This makes you remember though, hardcore gamers are 1-10, what I mean by that is for every 10 nub, uber grafix, fps only, hates all games but one gamers come along there will be only one of us. Now you have to do your part, younger brothers, sister, children, young relatives and anyone younger for that matter needs to be exposed to it. I have one reason for this then I will end my comment, when a young gamer first starts playing, those first few years are crucial. Every game that he/she will play has an effect on the gamer that they will become. You may think I am crazy but, think back to your first five years or so gaming....... yep thought so.
