Who's scrapping their old 360 for the new, big, bad, black not-so-rumored one? photo

Every gaming site under the sun has been buzzing today with what appears to be quasi-final confirmation of the HDMI-sexied black "Xbox 360 Elite".  Without making much fuss, here are the facts Engadget dug up from a variety of "trusted sources" about the Emperor's new clothes:

  • * The Elite will be limited quantities only; that may be as much or as little as a couple hundred thousand.

  • * The case, controller, and Live headset will all be black. It will have all new packaging.

  • * Elite will cost $479, and will be a 3rd SKU; it will be sold alongside Premium and Core packs.

  • * Eventually Elite hardware (in white plastics) will take the role of the Xbox Premium. That is to say, after the Elite is launched and sold out, future Xbox Premiums will have 120GB / HDMI.

  • * We do not yet know exactly when 120GB / HDMI will become the standard for Premium, but it is loosely estimated to be late summer or fall.

  • * Elite models run cooler than normal 360s, but they are not yet confirmed to have 65nm chips.

  • * Prices may remain the same with the 120GB / HDMI hardware upgrade in the Premium Xbox, but we may still see a price cut on the line when 65nm chips start shipping.

  • * The HD DVD drive will not be internal or bundled -- Microsoft never did or nor does not currently have plans to put an HD DVD drive in the 360.

  • * There are no current plans to integrate WiFi into the Elite or future Premiums (although that can always change).

My question is ... how many of you are making the jump? Is this offering important to you as a current Xbox 360 owner?  I'm interested in how people are reacting to the news.  If you weigh in, please specify whether or not you have an HDMI-capable TV and the premium Xbox package already.

Also, does anyone else think it looks kinda (gasp) ugly in black? I'm full of all kinds of unpopular thoughts today, folks. Of course, it could all just be an elaborate April fool's joke.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in.]

it's most def worth the extra $80. It has 6x the memory, it runs quieter, cooler, HDMI, it's limited quantity (~couple 100000), and it's motha fuckin black!

I would like to know why micrsoft didnt plan the 360 for the future like sony did. Wonder if all the 360 fanbizzoys will bitch about the $480 with NO INTERNAL WIFI OR HD-DVD price... probably not.

Personally, no... I do not like the look of the console in black. HDMI might be nice - I haven't truly seen the difference in that yet.. 120gb HDD is a "bleh", I don't download that much on their service.

The only thing I Would care about is the cooler running and/or better running processors... I consider that more of a fix than a luxury... The last thing we need are games being made to run hard and all the old processors start causing lock-ups while the ones with the new chips are happily walking along...

I still stick by my word that if Microsoft is going to do something so integral as a processor change - they should offer some kind of upgrade fare.

the best part about a new 360 is the 65nm chip that runs cooler and is cheaper to manufacture. And they haven't confirmed that the new chip will be in this new elite package.

The looks of my Xbox360 is not important to me. I have a Jacksonville Jaguars NFL face plate only because there was a deal when I bought my system that it came with the faceplate for free. If it were up to me the thing would be hidden completely from view, the same for my PS3. The 120 gb and the HDMI is cool, however, my TV only has 2 HDMI connectors, 1 for my PS3 and the other for my cable box. 120 gb drive is cool if I didn't have a network for media and if the Xbox Live Arcade increases size and quality in games. I think I can hook up an external harddrive to my Xbox360 anyway. I haven't come close to filling my 60 gbs.

Even if it does happen, I won't upgrade. My DVR uses HDMI, and I'm not swapping cables around every time I want to play 360.

Not to mention, the cost of upgrading.

When the time comes, I'll buy the hard drive separately. I don't need HDMI, though.

I have no HDMI, so I have no need to make the switch.. Thus far i've been quite pleased with VGA,

I can always buy a new HD, but when you think about it, the 360 is not a PS3, you don't NEED a bigger HDD. WTF could possibly put on the 360s HDD there besides music? (and who here among us acually puts music on it instead of simply streaming it from our PCs?) it makes no sense.
More space for XBLA releases? just delete them and re-download them whenever you like. im going to go this whole generation with my palty 13GB HDD that came with my 360

I dont need the Monolith 360 and never will

Although im all over that black controller when it's availible.

I currently own the premium edition, and I have an HDMI-equipped tv... Lucky for me all the HDMI ports on my set are in use, so initially I was fine missing out on the "Elite"

But I'm sick in the head, so when I heard this one is limited, my imbalanced brain started figuing out how to justify the purchase.

The larger HDD would be nice though

i said this in the forums, and I am bored and have nothing better to do with my time but to post it here.

Nobody should buy this for $480, it is a ripoff. This new package is just M$ trying to see if they can rip off customers before they do a price drop. They need to make the current Premium the new Core and this new SKU into the Premium. They can't have this pricepoint so close to the PS3. having a $480 pricepoint further justifies the PS3 at $500, and it has a blu-ray player.

M$ really needs to focus on teh middle pricepoint and not get higher than $400. Nobody should buy this at $480

The Black Colored "Elite" is 479 for a reason.. till they can ramp up enough to see them as premiums at the normal price.

So what you're paying for now is the color and exclusivity.
It's doubtful you'd be able to buy the 120 GB HD attachment for months after.

But if you can wait till end of summer.. you could buy a White Colored "Elite 120GB 360" at the Premium Price.

This makes me wonder.. Will the current Premium become the Standard 299.00.. so it'll come with smaller HD?

Kotaku, who first broke this Game Informer story, has confirmed with GI that it isn't an april fools joke on their part. I wouldn't upgrade to this while my current launch 360 is still running fine but if I was in the market I would buy this one.

I'm in the market and I'm unimpressed. Microsoft shouldn't be raising the price of the 360 closer to that of the PS3. The price should be going down, concomitant with lower production costs. And, 120 GB for "less than $200 is the biggest f'n ripoff right next to the $100 20 GB drive. Why not follow Sony and let the user put in their own HDD?

I was waiting for this, and now I'll be waiting longer for the "Elite" shit to trickle down to the premium. I hope that's not winter or I'll probably end up with a PS3 instead. And, I wanted to play Gears with Lauren and Fronz too...

Amazon still sells them. And Sony is still officially manufacturing them as of right now.

Until Sony discontinues the 20GB package in the US then it is still technically available for $500 whether stores like BestBuy decide to carry the product or not.

I'm not planning to get an HD tv anytime soon so I'm cool with my 360's lack of HDMI. Also, the only real reason to have a HD that big is for XBL's tv/movie downloads. Since that costs money and torrents don't, that's something else I don't care about. The biggest draw for me is the cooler processor. It'd be nice to play Oblivion without having it freeze up.

I don't want a most premiumest ultra mega aggregated diamond nanorod Type-R edition. I just want a damn 360 with 65nm chips so it doesn't blow up after a month!

Oh, and rumor or not, Microsoft is probably paying close attention to public reaction. Information doesn't just "leak" out.

Actually i was waiting for this "rumored" xbox for a long time.i was planning and trying really hard not to buy any current next gen consoles for a long time and it seems like without the HD DVD drive or WIFI this is not worth the wait. And of course now that reading the "limited quantities only" statement makes me wonder if i ever be able to buy anything besides a WII in my little country.
Price looks expensive but actually even a WII is overpriced here so i don't mind.Just make them available to all of Europe not just UK or Germany.

Honestly, it's pretty cool that it has HDMI, but without a confirmation on the 65nm, I'm not going to wait another 2 months.

Plus I only have 1 HDMI input, and my DVD player has dibs on that.

While initially I felt slightly sleighted, that passed and I doubt I'll upgrade for a long time if ever. I'm quite happy at 1080i right now as it looks gorgeous compared to my old tv lol.

Whether or not HDMI SHOULD have been included originally is a whole other argument but it's not that necessary really. The jump between 1080i and 1080p isn't really that noticeable to begin with. There's no HD-DVD built in, and the bigger hard drive would only matter if I even downloaded shows or movies (or planned to use their IPTV bs) I'd just assume save up for the Tivo Series 3 and enjoy my 360 for now. It's natural progression to update/upgrade systems over their lifecycle which is why I'm waiting on the PS3 so I only get half-shafted this console war.

I WOULD like to see Microsoft make an easy method for transferring all your data from the 20GB hd to the new 120s.

The new chips aren't being used in this system as I understand but it draws less power and is quieter from what I hear.
