Who needs drugs when you have videogames? photo

We recently told you how videogames are being used to cure migrane headaches, and now it looks like a similar approach is being taken to chronic pain.

It seems that virtual reality can offer as much relief as pain meds, and a Simon Fraser University professor is working to find out why.

"Controlling pain through computerized VR and biofeedback meditation therapies has the promise of providing successful, cost-effective alternatives to pain medications," said Diane Gromala, founding director of SFU's BioMedia lab. "There is a real demand for this kind of therapy."

Distraction is the name of the game here. Their controlled experiments show that subjects fully immersed in VR report less pain than their drug-using counterparts. Man, I've got to try this game!

Gromala says that this also gives patients a way to gain some control over their suffering while waiting for treatment.

....they sure they know how this one works? or are they just making BS like with the migraitions?

but maybe now I understand why i'd come home from work, start playing a game, and the headache seem to calm down.

Apparently the guy in the picture doesnt mind sharp needles piercing his tear duct to extract his precious tear fluid.

What they need now, is drugged out patients playing the games. They'll be in heaven.

Good stuff. It's only a matter of time, however, until a certain Mr. Thompson starts calling us druggies too. Sigh.

While this is a great to hear, I can't help but think the idea that a game could take away real physical pain any better than a shot of morphine. I could be wrong, just my opinion. But then again, I'd be willing to bet the game combined with the morphine would work just fine.

My girlfriend is bipolar 2. These past couple of weeks she has had a severe migraine. In her free time she would constantly play Animal Crossing for the DS. She would pick fruit, plant it or sell it. It took her mind off a lot of the pain. I think it was because she had control in that little world of hers. I guess you can just say it takes your mind off of things.

But me, playing Geometry Wars Galaxies for the Wii gives me a headache because it fucking pisses me off. So I make sure to do a lot of drugs before I play that.

videogames are no replacement for drugs.

although when used in combination (especially with games like REZ) drugs and videogames become an unstoppable duo!

I remember way back when I got braces, Ape Escape was way more effective than any painkillers.
