How much of that time was spent with the PS3 turned on and logged into the game unattended, though? Assuming there's no auto-AFK logout, and I wouldn't imagine there is, the guy could have just left it running at night when he went to bed most of the time, and that'd account for a good portion of that time.
Maybe some game sharing going on? Ban him, delete his account, and erase his data for the hell of it.
I let a friend of mine borrow Disgaea 3. He didn't actually play the game that much, but he never turned his PS3 off, so he had hundreds of hours even though he was only level 10.
Still plan on grabbing 2 sooner or later.

You don't realize how much you have to grind to get guild levels in that game, and if he maxed his crafting level as well that's even beyond that.
188 hours on disgaea 4 is the closest thing I've got.

True, he must have let the game on while eating/sleeping or even getting out of the house. Still, even if he only played 1/2 of that time, that's still a lot of time of someone's life spent playing one game.

I'm not sure if the point of this post was to show how much that Japanese gamer played or how cool and eclectic the writer is.

I'm going to have to assume that Tristrix is correct here. It definitely makes the most sense that he just left in on while he ate, slept, maybe even went to school/work. Otherwise... this is kind of sad.
But a normal gamer can complete a JRPG at 100% in less than 200 hours, that guy probably sucks if he needs 8501 hours more.
The most time I've ever spent on a game is about 526 hours on FFXII trying to do absolutely everything that game had to offer. I'd say about 30-40 hours of that was when I left it running.
Of course it was a Japanese gamer; they're unreal when it comes to video games in both skill and ability to sit for many hours at a time.
Being a WKC player myself, I can tell for a fact that thats not actual gameplay time. Its the norm for players to sit idle in a town while the make personal errands, chors, etc and then come back to the action. All of that is time that the game logs. But still... that is still insane and hardcore RPG mileage as I would imagine a good 60-70% of that is actual gameplay. L5 should send this guy a thank you gift for his dedication....an all exclusive world-class lady of the night seems inorder for this guy.

Dude probably just left the game on while doing other things. I do it on occasion with other games, but this guy's probably made a habit of it.
does this game have any types of exploits where youre sitting around waiting for stuff to happen, or gain money,stats etC? cause im sure he was only actually playing about 50-75% of that actual time.

I have the attention span of a toddler so I never play a game for long,the game with the most hours I have is Pokemon White with about 200+ hours,so I have to congratulate this dude for having a Godlike attention span.
I would have lost my mind. I can hardly sit and play the same game for more than 2 hours max before I have to go do something (main reason i don't get along so hot with MMOs). I'm not sure if I should feel sorry or amazed.

This isn't that hard to do. I have a friend who never, and I mean NEVER turns off his system or exit his games. His copy of Dark Souls was on and in-game from October 4th release until.. well, it's still on and in-game.
Christ, I had to take a break from Skyrim at almost 100hrs.
