In hindsight, I suppose making the world's most powerful consoles for both the home theater and portable gaming seemed like a bright idea. When you have the best system in the business, how could you go wrong? Who knew that the two most underpowered competitors from Nintendo would actually be irrefutably more enticing to consumers back then? I'm sure you've heard how well Nintendo is doing lately, but this new Bloomberg report will give fanboys a golden ratio they can sing about:
Wii Outsells PS3 5 to 1 in Japan
Japanese Famitsu game magazine publisher Enterbrain, which said Nintendo sold 251,794 Wiis during May. The PS3 sold just over 50,000 units. Xbox 360 was a dot in the rear view at 11,082 sold during the entire month. The DS outsold PSP at the same rate, with Nintendo’s handheld selling 620,670 versus 123,673 for Sony’s portable. The gap between PS3 and Wii widened since April in Japan, when the Wii outsold PS3 four-to-one.
That's gotta burn. As a PS3 owner, this news saddens my inner panda. I can only hope Sony and its now-wobbly third party support are going to come out of this one alive. Doesn't the Japanese know that its got Blu-ray amphetamines?!!
Editor's note: The mere thought of Reggie singing Morrison at a press conference sent me into a coma.

I am waiting for everyone to realize how gimmicky the Wii is and move on.
Even if the wii is gimmicky, it is still fun to play, even if it is just a party box (how i use it) and that is the problem, I think it is going to keep selling strong because of that...my parents even want one!
I think it really depends how many friends/family you have. Now that most of my friends are graduated or back in the area my Wii's been workin overtime.
oh yeah, and SMASH BROTHERS!
It is like buying a car and saying you can only drive it when you have 4 other people to ride with.
As the marketshare stands at the moment there's more money to be made by developers and publishers releasing an average Wii game compared to a good PS3 game.
Sony have made some bad mistakes during the last 18 months, not just with the PS3 but also exploding laptops and their DRM fiasco.
The Blu-ray thing was a big mistake imo. Not sure about over here in the UK or in Japan but I seem to remember reading a few months ago that only 18% of households in the States have HDTVs. What's the point in having a technologically advanced machine with bells and whistles if you don't have a telly capable of showing them..?
If they don't shift plenty of units before Christmas things could be very dodgy for the PS3 next year. The price needs to drastically come down or it's finished before it's even got started.
For those that don't remember the Betamax video system - and can't be arsed to look it up on Google - it was a video format that was in competition with the VHS system. The picture of videos was better compared to VHS and the sound was even better. Unfortunately it was a case of "getting what you pay for" as it is with the PS3. Technologically better, but more expensive. VHS was nowhere near as good but was cheap as chips.
Soon all of the film companies releasing videos dropped the Betamax format as almost everyone had the cheaper VHS system. It wasn't financially worth producing Betamax videos for sale or rental.
Not a bad analogy comparing that to the console situation methinks. The price has to come down.
If you're desperate for some single player stuff on it like I was, just find some good GC games you missed out on and play those. Then once fall comes and the huge AAA titles descend upon us, you'll be happy.
Beta failed for the same reason every Sony video format has failed. Sony won't allow porn to be distributed or manufactured legally on their formats.
Some UMD, Beta, and even BluRay porn have been created, but the lack of content has always lead to the failure of a format. Giggle about it all you want, and though it may be genuinely irrelevant in todays digital download world, but, no porn = fail for any video format.
Back in the 80's production companies found it to be infinitely cheaper to shoot in VHS than on film, and stayed on VHS for distribution.
Sadly, even though there are porn HD-DVD's on the market, I don't think it's enough to give that format the same push that it received back for DVD or VHS.
I think that price is the biggest thing helping the Wii succeed and the PS3 to fail.
How many of you would still have a Wii if it cost $600? How many of you would have a PS3 if it cost $250?
I would buy a HDWii :)
Ill let your down to earth, not in anyway weird, trend-happy culture guide All my purchases!
But how the Wii is so popular I'll never know. You would think that playing bowling, golf, and random "spin your arms in circles" games would get a little boring after a few minutes.
I definitely wouldn't have spent $600 for waggle... unless it was a free beer dispenser too. But also, I wouldn't have spent $250 on a PS3 cause there aren't any games for it I care about, and my PC can give me my graphics and "media center" fix.

@ BuckF1tches
I would buy a HDWii :) [/quote]
I wouldn't - too expensive. Even a 360 is out of my price range, but the Wii was a bargain at £180 with a free game. Reminded me of Atari releasing the Atari VCS 2600 with Combat. Those were the days lol.
Still the best console of all time imo, playing Asteroids, Space Invaders and Missile Command at home - groundbreaking. :Oo
Either way I understand everyones arguments and such and I respect them. But in my honest opinion the Wii is just a lackluster system. It has potential, but I can only jump around like the star wars kid in my living room for so long.
Personally, I would have had a PS3 long ago for $250, even without many games. I definitely would not have bought a Wii for $600. The Wii would be no where near as popular as it is today if it was priced at $600. People may still want one, but they wouldn't be selling out (still).
@xtofuconsumerx
Part of the reason i got a Wii was that i didn't own a GC and i knew i missed a couple of games that i wanted to play, like Eternal Darkness, Windwaker or Paper Mario.
Although I'll be the first to admit that i haven't bought a GC game :P.
I wouldn't buy a 14-inch portable for the price of a 50-inch HDTV either.
i think that making wii sans HD was probably A Good Thing for sales, albeit a tad shortsighted... you'll get to use the television that may serve no other purpose after The Big Signal Switch of Aught Eight. on the other hand, i'm not paying 40$+ for an HDMI cable even with an HD capable tv. component was good enough for my ancestors, it's good enough for me!
wii seems to be selling so well because many people desire a Different gaming experience, it reminds me of the console wars before the '84 crash.
But the PS3 is too expensive. It's not just too expensive for consumers to buy but is also more expensive than the other two formats to develop, test and publish for.
I'm not just talking about the cost of dev kits and test kits but also writeable Blu-ray discs both in terms of time and money. From Pre-Alpha to RC/GM stage think about how many Blu-ray discs have to be burnt during the development lifecycle compared to DVDs on the other 2 formats. DVD-Rs are a lot cheaper to buy wholesale than writeable Blu-rays, and it can take hours to write a Blu-ray disc too :Oo
2- that picture is quite gay.
- to each his own
Xbox 360: No HDDVD drive included.
Wii: For kids and old people only.
Now that I've stated whats wrong with all three of the "next gen systems",let me tell you guys what will be the winner of the console wars:
Apple
Steve Jobs will announce that Apple will enter the videogame console business, and it will completelly pwn the competition. This isn't a rumor, just my wishes/prediction.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA, that was a good one.... Wait you're serious? Not going to happen. :)
It has mass appeal.
Slick, small and stylish hardware along with an affordable price and a focus on casual and non-gamers turned out to be a winning formula.
It is innovative.
What it lacks in horse power, graphical capabilities and media features it makes up for with its original and refreshing motion controls as the main attraction of the Wii.
It has the games.
Sure, there aren't many excellent games to satisfy the core gamer, but at least there's big ones like Zelda at launch (the first killer-app as a matter of fact) and Paper Mario while the majority of casual games entertain the casual and non-gamer. The important thing is the promise that late 2007 will provide even more games especially from third parties.
