Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? On PBS photo

If you were a cable deprived child like me, you were forced to watch the few channels you could dial in on the antenna. You remember playing with the antenna, don't you? It was like being a cast away trying to find rescue signal with those evil devices.

Lucky for us that grew up in the 90s, public television had one really good video game themed show to watch everyday after school. From 1991 to 1996, PBS ran a game show called Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? staring Greg Lee as the host and Lynne Thigpen as The Chief. It was possibly the most entertaining show you could watch without wanting to rip the googly eyes off a muppet.

It had the best theme song sung by Rockpella, the show's music group and comedy troupe. I still can sing the words to this day. Hit the jump for part 1,2 and 3 of The Cave Art Caper episode and the sweet theme song.

Theme Song from "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" sung by Rockapella.

Sorry, I don't remember shifting the antennae. Why is that?

Because I'm not a moldy oldy.

Oh, and the alliteration in this video is fantabulously fearful.

This show was all kinds of great fun. I've actually got the version of the game where they used the Chief from the show as the in-game chief.

At any rate, it was a much better adaptation than the "Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?" cartoon.

Are you serious! I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! My friends and I still skulk around conventions of varying nerdiness and sing the theme song. Yeah, I know the second verse, wanna fight about it?

This show is great, but what does it have to do with videogames?

This had to be one of my favorite shows when I was a kid. I would have given anything to be on it, and I'm sure I would have kicked ass on it too.

I remember there was this one episode where a kid from India won and was able to choose where he wanted to go and he chose Idaho. Hahahah. Even today that's an inside joke with my brothers when we watched this when we were little.

I haven't had the chance to watch the show but I loved the games. I even managed to play the original versions, back when OS's were small enough to fit in floppy disks, and the monitors were all in black and green...

Over here we had only public channels till 1989 thats when the first commercial network started to broadcast. we had MTV Europe and Sky channel before that but those where all English. Even my till this day, when I watch TV - which is maybe once in the 5 months - it's the public channel. Dunno or our public channels are the same type as yours. We had entertainment like the Muppet show, it wasn't all educational.

@Danzuke: Broderbund also made a Win95/98 version of Where in Time Is Carmen Sandiego, but when I tried it it felt watered down, unlike the original games where you really have to dig and research on the clues.

But the little visual clues made the original ones somewhat easier, like when your in the right place, the "console lights" blink..

Thanks for the post Faith. I watched this show enough to really appreciate it and listening to the music again brings back good memories.

Man, I loved this show when I was a kid. I also grew up without cable (didn't have it until 1999, just before I turned 13), and I watched PBS shows (like this, Wishbone, and Ghostwriter) all the time. It's a shame that Lynne Thigpen passed away...if they tried to bring this show back now (I mean make new episodes), it would totally fail because she was the heart and soul of the show. I always wanted to be on this show, even when later on, they canceled it and put on "Where In Time Is Carmen Sandiego?" in its place. I would've kicked all those kids' asses. Does anyone know how you would've gone about getting on the show as a contestant?

New Orleans is in the northwest part of the Gulf of Mexico? You've gotta be kidding me...

"Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego" was an awesome show. It was one of those shows that adults could sit down and watch with their kids without thinking "God, when will this show END???" I was out of college when it started, but my wife and I would still watch it just to see what goofiness Rockapella would do next.

My wife (also named "Faith" ... hmmm) and I also got to see Rockapella in concert. Great entertainers.

Good stuff there, Faith!

First of all- Best theme song EVER.

secondly; Ghost Writer, and Bill Nye are probably two shows that me and my siblings talk about the most (that aren't aired anymore) They were fantastic. It's sad to think back and then look at TV now, its awful. After Seinfeld, Fresh Prince, and Friends went off the air and Reality TV took over, I turned to the internet for my entertainment and little girls everywhere turned into whores.

oh ya, and does anybody remember 'Cro' and 'Widget' Some rare cartoons right there, I always got so excited when I caught them. Widget had a game actually, I think his name was widget. He was an alien.

I really liked this show. Rockapella weirded me out, but now I'm able to fully appreciate their zany antics.

Also, Ghostwriter was awesome until they started changing the cast around and moved it to NBC. Remember the one where the dad from ALF burned down his computer software store to get the insurance money? LOLOL.
