When being a gamer is not a good thing: check out this kid's Final Fantasy name photo

Wow.

I mean ... wow.

Please, if you will, imagine Sephiroth Andrew Martin in third grade, at which point it is highly unlikely that he will be a badass anywhere near worthy of his name. Imagine other kids asking "What's your name?" And then, imagine a skinny, pimply, awkward seven year old kid replying "Sephiroth."

I'm all for gamer references when it comes to your loved ones (it's quite funny to name your fish Sephiroth, for example), but naming your kid after one of the most memorable game villains of all time is just downright wrong. That kid is going to suffer so much by the time he is finished high school that he is going to fantasize about killing his parents. Even worse, he may hate the source his name came from, which totally negates the coolness of using a game reference in the first place.

So yeah. it's goes without saying, but don't do this to your kid. Ever.

Except he'll grow up up being called Seth, which is both an awesome and quite normal name.

I absolutely enjoy how people get on here and tell us about their child-rearing plans. Really? You don't plan on having any children? How interesting.
That silence isn't your speakers gone dead. It's the sound of the whole of the internets not caring.

*ahem* Anyhoo.

It's really not that bad a name. I'm not sure what all the fuss is aboot, but somehow I severely doubt the kid will be ostracized much because of it. No more so than any other kid named Phil or Karl with a 'K', anyway.

I find it disturbing that whenever someone sees a name thats game related the automaticly thinks thats where it came from.

If your going to blog for this community at least be open enough to realize there is a great big world out there besides the US and that tiny little island in the far east.

A lot of VG names are common european names, japanise designers have a thing for the euopen and south american folk lores. Same way we get off on kung fu and stuff.

Most likely it had nothing to do with FF7. Friend of mine named his kid Gannon and never played Zelda. Turns out it was an Irish name or somthing. I felt bad when i told him his kid was named after the prince of darkness lol.

But even if it is a FF7 name so what, how many chicks pick names out of their bad romance novels. At least it is a cool name. doesn't really make then dorks, they just know what they liked.

Hell i named my daughter Kairi and Everybody loves that name.

Horrible, horrible. This kid is going to get the teasing of his life-time. His name is a made-up one, and many people are going to know it. You might has well have called him Gandalf or Frodo. This is just parents being selfish - thinking its "cool" without bothering to consider what kind of hell this child is going to have to go through. Selfish, bloody parents.

Sephiroth is actually derived from Judaism, so he might be able to use that as a defense. But I doubt it.

My parents initially wanted to call me "Trogon" after a bird found in Malaysia, but my Grandmother through a fuss and put a stop to it. Wise woman she is - instead, I was given the name Mark, a name I like, and Trogon was kept as my middle name. I can't imagine what I would have gone through at school if I had been given the name Trogon - hell, a guy I knew in school was teased relentlessly because he had the name "Arden" (which is a real name).

Poor kid. Poor, poor kid. It's not as bad as being named "harry" when your last name is potter, but it's still bad.

I agree with dex... It's not really that bad, I wouldn't do it but w/e.

Those who know Final Fantasy VII by the time he's in high school will think it's kinda cool maybe... and the great majority of his peers won't even know what a sephiroth is, he'll get the same attention as any dude with a weird foreign-sounding name... Now if his name was John Sodomy, that would be another story.

I can't imagine kids in ten years time having any idea what FF7 was. Even if this Sephiroth kid becomes a gamer and hangs out in gamer circles, this is what I would imagine:

Kid: Hey Seph, you know your name was the villian from Final Fantasy 7?
Sephiroth: Who gives a stuff about Final Fantasy 7 when Final Fantasy 20 is about to come out.

Unless a FF7 remake eventually comes out in ten years time, then it might be a different story.

And I can't believe I made references to Sephiroth as an actual person, its freaking me out even!!

Sephiroth has to do with the Kabbalah. Sorry to ruin the Final Fantasy stuff.

Potentially not game related.

@ Lordbobo - I'm with you on this.

Gamers - Get over yourselves. The rest of the world doesn't care about Final Fantasy 7. Sephiroth is, at worst, a slightly unusual name. It's nowhere near as bad as half the names that are considered normal where Ffordesoon comes from, and people named "Roth" get curbstomped.

Whatever. The kid will go by Seph, which is no less lame than dozens of other names kids end up with. In Canada, nobody would blink at a Seph. Only in the United States of Xenophobia would a kid have to worry that the only reason people need to kick his ass is a name they don't like.

@SWE3tMadness and the rest

While we may associate it with FFVII, how do we know these people have even heard of the game? Or play video games at all? Nowhere have I seen, either in the article above, or in doing a general Google search, that these people play video games and that the name definitely comes from the game and not the original source (and despite what the article above says, FFVII is not the "source" of this word). All I've seen is people posting copies of the birth announcement (like above) and then going out of their way to mock it unmercifully (like above). So, it could just be coincidence, and not "durr hurr stoopid gamerz named kid after vidya gaem". I think it's kind of telling that most of you are conceited enough to think that this is necessarily the case here.

But, for the sake of argument, what if it is from the game (because, let's face it, despite what I said in the previous paragraph, it probably is from the game)? WHO THE FUCK CARES? It's nobody's business but the kid and his parents. If he hates his name enough, and if it causes him enough problems down the line (i.e. retards constantly bullying him over FFVII or some such bullshit), then he or his parents can get it legally changed if it comes to that.

Also, this kid was born in 2006 (which is 100 years ago in Internet years, so yeah this story is older than dirt). Are people still going to give so much of a shit about FFVII in ten or fifteen years or so, especially kids growing up in the same time frame as this one who likely will not even be aware of the game (aside from maybe as "that game my parents played a million years ago"), that it's really going to be so much of a problem for the kid? Final Fantasy VII, while huge in gaming circles, at least for now, is not the giant mainstream phenomenon (or even mainstream gaming phenomenon) that some of you like to pretend it is. I love the game, I really do, but it's not that important in the big scheme of things.

And, again, the name isn't as bad as a lot of you are trying to make it out to be. And even if it were something equivalent to "Hitler" or "Shitface McAsshole" or "Sarah McCain Palin" or whatever, they probably will just call him Andrew or something, and the "Sephiroth" issue will likely rarely even come up. So all of you "this kid's life is ruined oh noes!" people just need to calm the fuck down.

Shit like this is why non-gamers think gamers are retarded (and in this case, I honestly wouldn't blame them for thinking that).

I completely Disagree, by the time this kid reaches school age he will probably have many friends, with names from final fantasy. I imagine him and Bugenhagen would be quite close and probably make fun of kids like Barrett and Red13.
Although I'm not sure what world you come from where 7 year olds are pimply and gangly... thats a little young for puberty unless he actually has jenova cells.

BTW I bet the first order of business would be to enact the law that all new born children are to be named after FF characters. My grandson shall be: CACTUAR!!

@ Im OK-

You couldn't be more wrong. Non-gamers think that gamers are retarded because they name their kids fucking SEPHIROTH.

It's not so bad to name your kid after something/someone if the name itself is not hideous. But I don't care if T'chaeiiahflagglefoot is the coolest game character ever, you don't saddle your kid with a shitty name just because you liked a game.

For all of you trying to defend it with "it's not that bad of a name" or even reaaaaaccccchhhing to trying to turn the tide of the conversation to how the US is xenophobic because we think Sephiroth is a dumb-ass name, keep on keepin' on, I guess. It's the internet, so you always have to have a few contrarians in every thread, even if the issue itself couldn't be much more black and white.

It's easy to say its horrible, or its wonderful, but think of what would actually happen. I guess it depends on the kid, but he'll end up being totally awesome, or a complete loser. He could scare people just by telling them his name, then he wouldn't get picked on at all. "I'm Sephiroth"
"holy crap! don't kill me!" lol... that would be funny to watch... I think I'll name my kids Zelda and Gannon and then put them in a cage and make them fight each other

In all seriousness, it's not that bad a name, and its not the end of the world. If the kid learnt to stick up for himself, he'd be fine, and if he couldn't do that, he'd be a loser regardless of his name. In fact, the name will probably help him. And just cus it hasn't been said enough yet, no one will probably even know what the name is from :P

Maybe if I have twins, I'll call them Mario and Luigi? lol, i could get them pet turtles :P

It really could've been worse. Besides, it's not like everyone will get the reference. Certainly none of the kids in his kindergarten is going to know or care where his name came from. If/when they ever figure it out it won't matter anymore because they've gotten used to it and the game came out sooooo long ago that it's a moot point.

Black and white, huh? Right, so because YOU think the name sucks, that means it obviously does indeed suck, no question about it, it's set in stone, and anyone who dares to think otherwise, including these parents, is just retarded, I guess. Sure, right, if you say so. *eyeroll* This isn't a fucking immutable law of physics or some such here. God did not reach down with a chisel and etch in "XI. Thou shalt not name thy child SEPHIROTH because it is a SHITTY NAME, so sayeth the Lord." But you just keep right on keepin' on, I guess.

And this is the point where I end the conversation from my end because it's obviously futile to continue talking to someone so militantly close-minded over such a trivial issue. I've said my piece and there's no profit in saying anything else.
