It "turned out nobody bought it," says Microsoft marketing director Albert Penello in an interview with OXM.
"We don't ever create an accessory with the intent of having it fail. The idea wasn't bad ... people used to put faceplates on their cell phones. Rewind five years, faceplates were what everybody wanted to do." Without sales, naturally they "killed that one pretty quickly," Penello continues.
While I don't sport a custom faceplate these days, allowing users to easily customize their electronics is a concept I will happily get behind. Especially when we're talking custom paint jobs. What does your 360 look like right now?

Jordan Devore is Destructoid's PC gaming manager and founding ginger editor. He is said to be easy to love but difficult to know. When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied:
"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
However, faceplates made the Xbox 360 look like junk. The S model is sexy and doesn't need to be customized. :)
and i would probably spent some money on one if there was one that i liked
I would do terrible things for that Earthbound plate tho.
But right now, I'm rocking the Deathsmiles one.
The ending of faceplates and the "we are making all of your old themes useless" REALLY pissed me off...I want my $30 I spent on random themes back please...
I have a saints row preorder plate new in package if anyone wants to make a bid!?
... you know, because in case I never mentioned it I WON IT AT PAX! ^_^
I did love the idea of the customizable faceplate, and it's kind of a shame that's completely gone on the Slim.
Don't know where I wound up putting that, but haven't seen it for years. I've got the John Woo Stranglehold plate on there now. Still looks good.
I get complimented on it all the time, actually.
Faceplates are so 90's.
I also have a Halo 3 one gathering dust, along with some decal ones. The Black decal'd one with TMNT heads around the power button, is the king, though.
Needless to say, it doesn't get a lot of time on the xbox. It sits in it's bag with a picture of the full 500. Can't imagine ever buying a run of the mill faceplate when I own that.
Kinect anyone?

Oh, and in reality, my 360 Phat sports the FF XIII plate because 1) Lightning is freaking hot, and 2) I am Square Enix's Bitch
