After a slight delay earlier in the week, Microsoft has finally pushed the NXE preview our way, which includes access to the newly added Avatar Marketplace. Anxious to update our Avatar in the latest fashions, that's where we headed first.
The Avatar Marketplace isn't packed with that many goodies... yet. But some of what was there surprised us. In addition to the Halo 3 and Halo 3 ODST store revealed at E3, we also found storefronts for Fable II and LucasArts' The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition.
While the Fable II store was relatively bland (you can buy a simple Lionhead logo shirt, for instance), the Monkey Island store was a bit more interesting. It'll be the only place you'll be able to buy a carryable eyeball necklace (160 MS Points) for your avatar, a gigantic cotton swab (160 MS Points), or a full LeChuck Pirate suit (240 MS Points).
Two other stores are open for business right now, as well -- Recessionista and Steampunk.
Admittedly, we're not ready to blow our Microsoft space dollars on items just yet. Fortunately, you're able to preview the items before you buy, so we were able to snap a few off-screen pictures for you to see. Check them out in the gallery, and hit the jump for the full list of items on the store, along with their pricing.
Note this is only for the males; you lady Avatars have some of your own gender-specific items to choose from. But we don't roll that way. Today. But probably tomorrow, so check back with us then.

unless you can race that RC car, but I highly doubt it.
God, I hate XBLMarketplace.
...figures.
If anyone on my friends' list buys any of this stuff, I'll delete them immediately.
The shit will sell whether or not it's a lame idea. Just because we think it's lame, doesn't mean everyone else will. Make no mistake about it, Dtoid users are NOT the target market for this stuff.
Also, the value of $5 is different for different people. Some teenage kid with a $5,000 credit card that mommy and daddy pay off regularly will buy this shit, trust me. Even if only a few people buy this stuff, there really is no cost to putting it on the marketplace. How many people have to work on "developing" a new shirt or a pirate hat? That shit is basically ALL profit. 50,000 people can buy a dumbass pirate hat, and it won't matter because it hardly cost shit to make.
Especially if it gets me removed from some peoples friendslist!!!
It's so cute when one nerdy-loser tries to call out another nerdy-loser.
haha.
I want me a star fleet uniform. a la Generations. ohhhhhh or a borg outfit.
(you can see where I'm going with this.)
If they're going to push this shit they better start pumping out games that support avatars. Given the restrictions on what can and can't be done with avatars though, I can't imagine developers are rushing to incorporate them.
Worms 2 supports avatars. Just saying there are good somewhat popular games that do support them. I think UNO rush supports them as well but I have yet to play that, hell I don't even know if it's out yet.
i would bet you everything i own that thousands will buy this crap
On a side note: It's really shocking to me, how everybody was pissed that Microsoft introduced avatars, but still everybody seems to enjoy them now.
So what exactly are we paying for with XBL? They're microtransactioning the shit out of it, the dashboard is a slow, and shitty experience now with ads. So I guess we're just paying for the privilege of online multiplayer, which is free on every other platform. Including Windows Live on the PC, where Microsoft tried charging for online, but had to stop because no one would pay for it. So maybe people should start boycotting XBL, then the same thing might happen with XBL!
God, kitting yourself out in full Halo gear will almost cost you a Shadow Complex...
Um. Really?
Something must be wrong with mine, then.
Again, A fool and their money makes someone else rich...
Sure, by definition. But the difference I'm speaking about comes from the interfaces between the games & gamer. Personally, I don't want to be assaulted with heavily disguised subliminal marketing, in no small part from "avatars" that are forced upon users & have no true use other than to identify you & create an emotional attachment to what is in essence a marketing ploy. Spotlight on games, Premium themes, Halo avatar clothing... It may be outrageous to claim these things are bad for you, but I believe so & paying money for them is the ultimate insult. I am a gamer, I read sites like Destructiod, I know what I want to play before its even created. I am not a child or imbecile that needs brain cleaning every time I interact with my machine. NXE is a ploy designed to infiltrate our gaming routines & train us to be a better consumers. I like my interface to treat me like a pure gamer - one who doesn't need to be sold what to like & play - hence, Steam.
but no dice for now
