It really is a crying shame that LittleBigPlanet has had poor sales thus far. The title offers a dizzying array of tools for creative individuals to run free, and when you marry brilliant minds with the game’s level editor, you get an endless stream of amazing work. Exhibit A came weeks before the full game was even released: a crafty programming genius built a calculator capable of performing addition and subtraction, and the world was blown away.

Here’s another entry in the list of awesomeness to come out of LittleBigPlanet: PSN user Cristel, who likely has a comprehensive background in computer science/programming, has created two working versions of tic-tac-toe! Here’s Cristel’s description:

Play Tic Tac Toe against a machine! There are 2 boards. One is beatable, one hopefully isn’t (if you don’t cheat). You can also take a look at the machine. Have fun!

I believe the scientific term to describe my current state is ... *HEAD ASPLODE*. I’m trying to decide what’s more unbelievable -- this, or the calculator -- and I keep flipping back and forth. It’s hard to tell since the video is pretty crappy, but it appears that Cristel simply used a “brute force” method of programming -- i.e., she inputted all the possible outcomes for tic-tac-toe. Since the player is always X, and X always goes first, there are 255,168 possible games (according to Wikipedia)! Of course, appearances can be deceiving, and Cristel says she definitely didn’t use brute force.

In the end, I think I’m going to have to go with this over the calculator for “most impressive computational LBP level,” since I’m pretty sure that this is the first documented proof of artificial intelligence created by a user. How crazy is that? My hat’s off to you, Cristel.

[Via Kotaku]

[Update: Cristel has let us know that she’s not a “he” (a poor and regretful assumption on my part), and that she didn’t use brute force. I really should stop talking out of my ass when it comes to programming matters. --Samit]

You would have to be an engineer to build that level.

That guy is awesome.

Damn that is pretty freaking amazing. I'll be on LBP around 11 tonight so I'll have to see if I can find that level just to see what the whole thing looks like. LBP never ceases to amaze me. It's kinda like playing a dream. SO much weird shit happens in one session. And then you sit down to make a level and it just feels like you could do anything. I'm glad someone decided to make it, even if it isn't a blockbuster - many of my favorite games in the past were not (Eternal Darkness, Shenmue, Beyond Good and Evil). SOmetimes it feels like if I really really love a game, it is the kiss of death LOL.

That shit is amazing! And I thought my perfectly working escalator was awesome. In fact it is awesome... I want to create something cool as this but I keep getting distracted by other things I create.

Man, that really is amazing. I can't even manage to do that with an object oriented programming language and a working knowledge of game trees and alpha-beta pruning. And I have a CS final tomorrow........

On one hand, that really is remarkable and took a lot of talent. A LOT of talent.

On the other hand, all that work, and it's Tic Tac Toe. I mean, you can play Tic Tac Toe.

I'd rather see an awesome level than a Tic Tac Toe level or calculator, personally.

Didn't LBP sell over a million copies already? If so I don't consider that poor sales. Reminds me of how people keep saying Crysis was a flop while it sold more than 1.5 million copies in it's 6 months. A game doesn't need to sell 6 million to be a success.

Tic Tac Toe?

Fucking Christ, this makes me want to go vote up a bunch of Sonic The Hedgehog imitations. At least those where remotely kinda fun to play.

And people wonder why LBP has "poor sales".

Very impressive indeed, but... I'd love to see more original work in LBP. I'm sure over time we will see some stellar work though, that which is not simply just recreations of old games. Pretty damn sweet still.

Uh, great, I guess, but tic-tac-toe is probably the worst game ever. Am I the only one who thinks this way? I think i can find a freeware tic tac toe game... and I already have calc.exe... good effort, too bad the prize had to be Tic Tac Toe.

rereading my comment it sounds pissier than I mean it. I just can't wait to see the stuff that's created that's *not* an ultra-basic app or game.

Hey, D-toiders....try out my LBP levels...They are based on Fallout 3 and I would love some feedback from some core gamers...FALLOUT 3:ESCAPE FROM VAULT 101 and FALLOUT 3:WASTELAND TO MEGATON by HIGGZ are out now, with more on the way (original level should be out by the weekend)...thanx for the support!

I wonder if in the long run they could have made more money by making LBP multi-platform?

I'm one of many Xbox owners who want this game really bad, but not $60 + $400 for a new PS3 bad.

I'm with Noah, except I only have a wii and no chance this game will make it that way... but this would definitely be the game I bought if i had a ps3.

Narishma: LBP has only sold 356,000 copies in the U.S. For such a high-profile, intensely hyped/marketed game, that is a flop.

A brute force algorithm is hardly what I would call intelligent.

Regardless of how it was put together, it's still a user-created AI interface, and that's pretty damn awesome.

Hi all!

Thanks for posting my level here! I'm glad you like it. Thank you for the kind comments too.
I didn't use brute force, actually. I couldn't possibly get 255,168 different situations in just one level.

BTW: I'm a girl, so please stop calling me 'he':-)
