Somewhere around April a few years ago, my wife and I drove to a local Toys R Us to pick up a then elusive Wii, with no luck. A serendipitous call to Target yielded a lead and a quick 15 minute drive, ending in a dramatic rolling dropoff with my daring wife at the wheel, resulted in the acquisition of 1 Wii, a copy of Wii Play, SSX Blur and the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
Fast forward to present day, and Nintendo's relatively low-tech wonder sits attached to the low-tech living room TV. Its the winter months and, in typical game cycle fashion, there's plenty of interesting things to play. Most of them on the PS3 and 360.
As it happens, I don't play on my Wii on a very regular basis at the moment. Without getting too personal, I'm actually using my HD systems more for their media capabilities this week in particular. Sometimes, gaming just isnt in me, and catching up on some good movies and TV shows is a nice way to unwind. The Wii, where it is now, takes a particular and determined effort to log time on. I've got to divorce myself from my computer entirely, do the extra few button presses to engage the video on my VCR, through which the console is running. Consider also that my wife enjoys her evening shows on that same TV, and it turns out that for me to play on my Wii is probably the most inconvenient gaming experience that I have currently setup for use.
But once I'm there, its pretty much the best thing ever.
A good Wii session usually involves a real-for-real disc based game. Lately, its Wii Sports Resort and A Boy and his Blob. While the cool thing to say is that I'm all about choppin' fools with the excellent Motion+ swordplay games, I'm a sucker for table tennis. I tend to get in about 5 matches, with the AI and my skill now at a pretty good mix. I've traded a good number of wins in single player and the playis pretty effortless from a control-to-output perspective.
A Boy and his Blob is a rental, which is a good percentage of the new Wii games I play lately. Opting for more traditional controls, this game really takes the platform and simply makes a good time of it. Rare even in the hallowed decks of XBLA, the hand drawn and fluid artstyle is especially gorgeous. Maybe, being on a 10-15 year old TV helps me not realize that this console can't pump out the intense shaders and thick resolutions of my other consoles. This and many other games on the platform are decidedly not about pushing shaders, but rather about the craft of making a unique and special game experience.
Once I've had my fill of a full game for the night, I've usually backed out back to the Wii Menu. By no means as efficient or practical for the organization of large amounts of data, the interface is clean, and pretty much evocative to the prospect of actually playing games. My main page of channels hold some of my favorite games that I'm happy to have ready to play in moments of turning my console on. River City Ransom, Super (FREAKING) Dodgeball, and every Mega Man game they'll let me download. I can jump right into a frozen state Mega Man III, chip away however unsuccessfully at Shadowman's evolved stage, and jump right back out to some other quick game session.
And there's probably the best thing going for my Wii. Right there on a little SDcard are about 2 dozen other games that I've downloaded for the system. After tolerating some extra loading times I'm primed for some really satisfying gaming: WiiWare downloads.
I've got more of these titles than I have business to, many of which I haven't even finished. But they're there for the chipping. Before calling it a night completely, I'll jump into a Bit.Trip game and try to get that one more level that I failed at before. At the risk of being lulled to sleep, there's Lost Winds and its sequel, which I really need to dedicate some waking attention to. Swords and Soldiers competently handles my fleeting RTS needs and the idea of digging into My Life as a King again gets ever more attractive the longer I have to wait for a true SimCity sequel.
But I've digressed. By the end of a night with my Wii, I'm a satisfied customer. People say they can't find anything to play, but I don't understand that: I've got more than enough. I've heard that there's an abundance of shovelware, but that hasn't affected my actual Wii gaming. There's trepidation and general motion control displeasure, but I've had some pretty righteous motion control integrated good times.
Its been said somewhere, I think, (Johnathan Holmes?) that if you really love games, you have a Wii. As divisive a statement that may be, it feels that, if I didn't have a Wii, I'd have really missed out on some real pure core gaming this generation. Certainly, I'd have been a bit mopey about being a Wii only owner, but as a "core' gamer, I'd probably feel that way about any given system this generation.
That's my Wii Experience, and I'd say most times, its exactly what I need it to be.

I don't have a Wii, but I did convince my brother to buy one for my nephews so I have a Wii I can play at their house or borrow for the occasional week here or there. :)
Whereas my Pc... It's usually that I hop into a game of Half-life 2 deathmatch, when something takes a biitt to long to load.
Good stuff man.
All very well said. The Wii is definitely my gaming platform of choice, for the reasons (as well as others) you've outlined above.
I literally have no idea what these people are doing that claim the Wii "has no good games". I think it's mainly internet talk instead of them actually playing some.
I may not have given Wii Sports resort a fair enough shake. It's collected dust ever since I bought it an tried it out initially. I'll have to give it another go after reading this.
I think that was more of a statement against the elitist mentality.
If you don't like the Wii, not a big deal. But I think you're missing out on SOME good games.
My sister's boyfriend and I are absolutely addicted to Wii Sports Resort's table tennis. He spent 2 hours 3 days ago just trying to beat the female champion opponent but he got beaten every time. She's too damn good!
Personally, I play my Wii almost on a regular basis. Right now, I'm on my second play through of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (great game by the way) I'm trying to unlock the rest of the unlockable content in Excitebots one of the best racing games). I've been recently going back and forth between different platforms as I just beat Zelda: Spirit Tracks a few days ago and I'm investing a lot of time into Team Fortress 2 (I wish I bought this game sooner).
BUY THE FUCK OUT OF SILENT HILL: SHATTERED MEMORIES.
DO IT. NOW. GO!
I've been sitting on this article topic for a while now. Inspired mostly because we always get these near-weekly random c-blogs about fixing the Wii, or what's wrong with Nintendo, the downfall of the Wii, etc. But we usually don't hear people say more about their actual Wii experience beyond the rote "its collecting dust" meme.
For what its worth though, your article tipped my hand on actually getting this one down on vapor!
I completely agree with what you said. I love playing the Wii as well, and I'm also on an SDTV. I sense a pattern...
And Wintersocks is right, if you're looking for a good one, you should go for Shattered Memories.
I may not play my Wii as much as my PS3 but I always enjoy the time while I'm on it.
If you only play games with AAA production values in the most popular genres of the day, then yeah, skip the Wii. But to me, that means you aren't really a fan of videogames as a medium. Rather, you probably just like what they can do for you (escapism, power fantasy, ect) and may very well abandon videogames in the long run when something better comes a long.
Games:
-SMG
-Punch Out!!
-NSMB Wii
-SSBB
-RE:UC and DC
-A Boy and His Blob
Among others!
WiiWare:
-Mega Man 9
-Contra ReBirth
-Castlevania ReBirth
-Excitebike
-Lost Winds
-NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits
Among others!
And I'm still looking forward to playing No More Heroes and its forthcoming sequel! Holmes is 100% right. If you love video games and I mean if you truly love video games, you need to own a Wii. Do it. Do it.
I agree with the Holmes statement about the Wii. We as gamers are unbelievably averse to change, happily eating up decade-old ports and trying out anything that might tickle our nostalgia bone. I think the Wii has been such a departure (i.e. the control scheme and de-emphasis of shiny graphics) that many traditional gamers fish for reasons to dislike it. But every "heavy in shovelware" and "too gimmicky" eventually boils down to "it's different and I don't like that."
Oh, the vocal minority!
I sold it 6 months ago in June '09... I hadn't found any interest in many of its titles (Madworld being my first purchase since Smash Bros and my last purchase on the console). I had a handful of classics on VC, but I only ever touched each one for about 2 hours at a time since I had played the hell out of them earlier in my life and had newer games to experience.
Now with NMH2 (NMH being one of my favorite Wii originals) and Tatsunoko vs Capcom on the way (with great stick support from Madcatz!) I am considering getting another one and keeping it for good. I also realized that I missed out on getting New Super Mario Bros Wii (loved the DS one, and my limited playtime with the new Wii titles has been satisfactory).
This does position me in a place of gaming regret, and it's probably a mistake I'll never make again... But yes, the air is right for some Wii loving lately.
to play Gamecube games I missed. Like the Metroid Prime titles
I agree with this post, too. The Wii suffers in terms of quality, AAA content, but the DLC is where it's at. Admittedly, I can emulate them, which is preferable for, like, RPGs (that aren't on VC at all), but...you can't beat the Wii for having a large selection of time wasting old game for really cheap. And new puzzle-type games.
I think when people say, "There are no games for the Wii!" it's usually in reference to how there's not a whole lot of disc based content. And there isn't. Besides Brawl, there is no single Wii game I return to, and a lot of the single player disc games (recent example: Boy and His Blob) are kind of...mediocre compared to games I could get on other consoles/PC. They're not bad, but they're B+ games in a world where we want to play A+ content.
No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
Sin & Punishment: Successor to the Sky
Red Steel 2

Then there's Wiiware. (includes some multiplatform games)

And yet it Moves
Mega Man 10

To add to Holmes statement, if you love Video games-from 5 years ago with both gameplay and graphics, then own a Wii. Ill stick with Uncharted 2 and the Xb360 version of Bayonetta.
Also Iv got Madworld, Manhunt 2 unedited, Super Smash Bros for it. Anyone know any third party stuff i can get (I have lost interest in Zelda, Mario and never liked Metroid). That is that is worth getting for Pal.
The right stick is the pointer.
Also, WE'RE GETTING A NEW TOKI?!? How did I not know about this?!?
For me, the Virtual Console is where it's at.
Fast forward to now, I'm a big PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3 gamer. I absolutely love both of them. I've grown tired of Nintendo and their Wii. In fact, my DSi was the trading factor for my PSP.
I had Xbox 360 but it received the Red Ring of Death and I decided $100 to repair it wasn't worth another space marine game. My PlayStation 3 on the other hand has become my gaming love. The Wii is just there collecting dust to only be brushed off when someone comes over to play Mario Bros Wii or when Nintendo releases a new (big) first party title that isn't a sports or waggle gimmick game.
I think this is the only time in gaming history where it would have made such a difference it could have completely dominated the landscape if only they didnt neglect the graphics and online.
I'll stick to my PS3, but I've got God of War going on at the moment, hard to pry me away.
I don't think so. Had the Wii been as powerful as the PS3/360, it very well could have flopped.
Now that it's a huge success though, I see very little reason for Nintendo to not put out a fully backwards compatible Wii HD. Even if it flops, they still have the old Wii to fall back on.
I think I'm pushing 40 Nintendo disc games now, which is just under the number of PS3/360 titles owned. I don't know why, but Wii games just seem more elusive to me. They seem -- or at least from the last few purchases I've made -- they feel like experiences I couldn't get if I were to solely rely on my Playstation.
You kinda need both if you're to get a full taste of gaming these days. Over half my PS3 collection is made up of music games and shooters, whereas I may only have about 2 or 3 of these on my Wii. Then again, I have far less original games on my Playstation; instead I get my blockbuster action/adventure fix from there!
Frontpage is deserved.
I really admire and support those who aspire to bring the Wii's true strengths to the forefront to combat the noise of those who would tear it down with tired rhetoric.
To those who claim that the Wii features "old" gameplay and graphics - news flash - there's no expiration date on good gameplay. As for the graphics, the choice to go with a lower-powered machine was a risk (that cost N some cred among "core" gamers) but it was a deliberate decision on Nintendo's part. It's a constraint that's forced developers to focus on substance over dazzling visuals, and in the most notable cases - NMH, MadWorld, Super Mario Galaxy, etc. developers have done wonders within their given limitations on both fronts. Design without constraint leads to bloated, unfocused software with no soul.
Obviously, some so-called game designers took the "easy" way out and made a few too many gimicky minigame compilations. This isn't an indication of the true power of the console, but rather the skill (or lack thereof) of these greedy, hack designers.
Saying that ANY system has a more diverse genre portfolio than the PS2 is ignorant at best.
I know you like your quirky, odd-duck games and there are 10 fold more of them on the PS2 than the Wii. The ONLY area where the PS2 faltered a bit was in FPSs, but it's library of them is still infinitely better than the FPSs on the Wii.
Not to mention that a lot of games on the PS2 STILL look better (graphically) than similar games on the Wii.
If you're a fan of gaming, then you will have a system that plays the games that you want. I honestly and sincerely feel that the Wii offers next to nothing for someone like me. And if anyone ever tried to tell me I wasn't a gamer I'd SLUG THEM RIGHT IN THEIR DIRTY MOUTH!
best article I've read in a while.
if you think like this article does, you might wanna join up at this website.... www.wiiaredeep.com
As a long time pc-gamer, the wii has exactly the kind of games that I crave for.
The PC provides me with all the RTS and FPS that I could ever want (and they're better AND cheaper than those generic shooters on the ps3 and xbox360) while the Wii has alot of unique experiences and basically every other genre.
The controls also DO provide an extra layer for me.
Everyone who's ever played excitetruck or SSX Blur could tell you how incredibly awesome the flow in those games was. The controls were very tight and it just felt right to play in that way.
Anyway, still need to get Silent hill but I'm so busy with counterstrike/TF2/Company of Heroes/L4d2. Bloody online games.
