What the gaming world looked like when the Internet began photo

The Internet has become so important to most of us that it's difficult to imagine life before it existed. Quite an amazing thing to think about when you consider the fact that the "WWW" only really took off in the mid-nineties. When it did take off, however, the games industry was there, and we thought it would be fun to go back in time using Wayback and take some snapshots of the gaming world as it looked when the Internet was but a fledgling infant.

Picking a selection of games media and company sites from between 1996 to 1998, we see an Internet that may appear shocking to our younger readers. Yes kids, things really did look like this back when dinosaurs ruled the Earth, and Web pages that appear as if a four-year old designed them were actually official corporate sites. The Konami page really looks like a Geocities fan site, a far cry from the slick and stylishly designed work we expect from publishers and developers nowadays.

Some Web sites to take note of include IGN, back when they had a design that didn't confuse and terrify, and Codemasters offering background music if you had "an Internet MIDI player." We're also laughing at the utter failure of Atari naming its Web site "Jagwire."

Sadly, a few Web sites were protected so we couldn't find everything we wanted. We'd love this to be as comprehensive a gallery as possible though, so if you see a glaring ommission in our image selection, feel free to hit up Wayback.org, find an example of an important site from between 1996 and 1998 then fire up our reply box with a link. We'll be adding to this gallery as and when you guys find more additions.

Ah, I remember ravaging these sites at my friend's house in highschool...the joys of thr 56k modem standard. This was also during the time of Doom 2 deathmatch games between 2 people. Those were great times.

Did I just date myself?? Crap. Where's Yojimo when you need him?

It's like looking at photos of you in the 90's with that teased up hairspray 'do and leaning up against your IROC-Z wearing the MC Hammer pants.

I remember some of these!

I love how almost all of the pages look like they were made by highschoolers.

Things like this remind me of being 13 again.

I miss those days. I also miss N64.com before they joined that other, er, conglomera - *cough IGN* - tion.

The way I remember N64.com

@Rifter01: Happy Puppy was another favorite! I'm glad you remembered that one!

Oh wow, I remember visiting that ancient incarnation of IGN! The SquareSoft site is the only one that looks like it could hold up today. And that GameSpot site design is hilariously awful.

Some of us remember life before the Internet. We seemed to have more spare time, and people actually went outside! Amazing, I tell you ;-)

Yeah, I totally remember all this. HappyPuppy. Discovering videogames.com (later Gamespot - I actually used the videogames.com URL for years to get to gamespot.com). Going online in '96 on 28.8 kbaud to download the combo moves list for Killer Instinct and the fatalities for MK2 in the arcades :)

I could be speaking alone, but I actually prefer 90's web design over this new fandagled age. Maybe not in terms of usability, but just the simple text look with not too many intrusive graphics.

The old Id site, I spent way too much time in college reading over the clan listings they used to host.

Konami of America used to be in Illinois? Wow!

Rare's looks about the same today as it did back then (except now it lacks a reference to the first 'Mortal Kombat' movie).

"Hyper links," you say?

Ah, what a great way to waste 20 minutes at work. Thanks for the dose of nostalgia.

One of my biggest computer-related accomplishments in 1996 was downloading custom Mega Man desktop icons from some totally random guy on AOL. I'm sure there was a virus in there somewhere. Good times.

Ah, the days before stupid sites full of Flash ads and navigation.

*wishes the internet was text only sometimes*

Square and the newer version of IGN actually look decent - IGN especially looks better than it does now. Some of those are scary though. ;)

Wow, GameFAQs used to speak in the 1st person??

Gamespot and IGN still look very slick and corporate relatively. I guess some things never change...

Also, lol at (2D) GTA desktop theme
