What the armor says: Gear of War photo

“Jack, rip this door,” a voice says, the words echoing in the tiny chamber. Hot shrapnel flickers and temporarily brightens the dark room Marcus Fenix has been imprisoned in. Once ripped, the door swings wide. Light creeps in. Fenix’s silhouette sweeps across the screen. He’s naked. For the first and only time in the Gears of War series, Fenix is shown without armor. After the scene, the grisly protagonist dons a suit fit for combat. Heavy and bulbous, the metallic plate covers the entirety of his chest and torso, as well as his shoulders, thigh, arms, and legs.

Heavy plate has become a running joke of sorts. We’ve become accustomed to seeing big and burly men wearing equally big and burly armor in our videogames. I recently asked four studios the same two questions in order to figure out why huge or space-like armor appears in their games. The first studio I spoke with is Gears of War developer, Epic Games. Designer Cliff Bleszinski took a few moments to answer via e-mail.

Bleszinski was realistic when I asked what the space armor said about the characters or world it’s based in: “The armor on the characters in Gears of War implies that they're incredibly strong, resilient, and that they're shot at on a regular basis,” he said.

But it’s not all about bullets and brutishness. After several iterations, the Epic team settled with armor they felt was “iconic,” and did more than make the men look tough. It was used to reinforce the need to use the game’s cover system.

“We cycled on the armor designs a fair amount until we came to rest on the iconic ‘rounded chestplate/blue emissive’ look,” Bleszinski said. “As with all things in game development, it required many iterations until we found something we all felt was iconic. Above all, it made the characters feel ‘heavy’ so that when the player took cover he really felt like he was slinging a massive entity against a wall.”

Now that I think about it, slamming my back against a barrier was almost as gratifying as crunching facial bones with a melee attack. The armor ended up being a clever bit of design. It provided force and feedback for a non-aggressive combat movement.

Tomorrow, I’ll bring you thoughts from the creators of the Capital Wasteland and the Brotherhood of Steel armor.

TO be honest there's very little point asking Bethesda about the Brotherhood of Steel power armour, as they didn't design it. They had to have it in the game because it's an iconic piece of Fallout imagery. As far as why Black Isle designed it that way, I'd guess it's to make the Brotherhood look like big, serious, badass knights in shining armour who are kinda faceless and menacing, and completely insulating themselves from the hazardous wasteland.

This is a great idea for an article, can't wait till the next one.

PLEASE contact Valve and ask them about the Combine's armor. (In my opinion, one of the most iconic and well thought out designs in games.)

I always loved bairds' goggles. I would kill to own a pair

Something I noticed though, was that in number 2, in one cutscene, bairds' goggles and armour turned green, where it was normally all blue.

To this day I still dont understand why.

Bethesa kinda fucked up with the BOS armor, the T51-b of the first gams was perfect, but they made that horrible that they use in DC.
Also, Gears armor is incredibly awesome.

@ Brian

Yeah, but then they wouldn't see snipers as good.

Is the first paragraph part of a slash fanfic piece you're writing Brad?

The helmet didn't do Carmine any good.

Are we attributing creating the Fallout property to Bethesda or interviewing former Black Isle employees too?

I knew that day would come, and I was prepared to then weep like a man that lost a child. But so soon... why so soon?

In all seriousness, asking Valve and/or Bungie could be far more interesting than hearing Bethesda talk about something they didn't conceive.
(I have no hopes of Brad having talked to former BIS guys.)

Definitely talk to the Killzone folks about the Helghast armor. Cool idea for a series.

This is pretty cool :)

But, if you have massive armor.. why would you need to take cover?

@Alastayr

I haven't read the Valve art book but the one thing that catches my eye on the Combine soldiers (not the Metro Cops) is they have what prison guards call "Ninja Turtle" riot armor. Which adds an interesting commentary of City 17's Police state like atmosphere.

@Timmeh

It's rather sad that Black Isle's works have almost completely faded into gaming obscurity after creating some of the most memorable and famous RPGs: Planescape, Icewind Dale, Fallout, even had their hands in that delicious Baldur's Gate 2 pie.

Personally I'd like to hear about armor in Mass Effect from BioWare. It's extremely sleek and agile looking in comparison to most other stuff, yet still looks suitably like armor.

Plus it's way more interesting to hear about designing armor for non-human characters aswell. Garrus's suits always gave me a Metroid vibe.

I have pretty much the entire black Isle RPG catalogue from BG1 on. All sitting in a nice little CD binder.

Actually BigbadBoogie the power armor was around way before the Brotherhood of Steel, it was designed to be a walking tank in the battle for Anchorage, Alaska, not just for the BoS, all they really did was start to wear it.

I apporve of this message as well. As for Gears armor, I always figured it was to convey a type of knight look on them. It does look like knight armor if you pay attention to the details, albeit futuristic versions. Think about it, the locust are basically orcs, the brumak is a troll, etc, etc.
