What? No! Why?: Xbox 360 Rock Band's USB hub requires external power photo

While I'm sure the folks over at the 1UP offices have been enjoying Rock Band, not all is well. You see, the Xbox 360 hardware only has three USB ports, and Rock Band utilizes four USB instruments at once. Harmonix and Electronic Arts have solved the problem by including a USB hub with the bundle that ships this November.

Unfortunately, 1UP is quick to point out that the USB hub will require external power. That's right, it might be time to free up some room on that overflowing power strip or surge protector you've already been abusing. PlayStation 3 owners shouldn't have an issue -- there are already four USB ports right in the front of most PS3 consoles (the 40GB model only has two).

While I'm not going to say that this is going to turn me off from picking up the game as soon as humanly possible, (I played some of it again this weekend, and I haven't washed my hands since), it's a frustrating little detail. Maybe some of our tech savvy readers can clue us in as to why one might need a power adapter for a USB hub, but even with a logical explanation, there's still plenty of room to whine.

It really sucks, but I guess it's really not that big of a deal. Just pretty retarded..

Wait, scratch that. EXTREMELY retarded. I'll most likely end up pushing myself through it though.

oh god, not more wires! once they conglomerate with my current riddle of wires it'll be impossible to untangle.

An external power source is necessary because the instruments probably all draw power from the USB port. While it's fine to split low-power devices (mice, keyboards, etc.) over one USB port because they can't possibly use the entire +5v power source available in a single USB port, 4 large Xbox 360 instruments will need the extra jolt of power to function.

the only good thing is that you could just buy a different hub that dosent requie plug in power. I'm sure there are some out there.

It has been my experience that USB hubs don't neccessarily need pluged into power. And this one seem like its not a custom 360 one it has a windows logo on it. Generally you only need to plug in the power when the devices connected need it high power things like Harddrives and scanners have been my experience And this may very well be the case when you have 4 usb controls tring to be powered by one USB port but it may be too soon to say. I've had a keyboard, mouse, usb joypad, and a printer hooked up to a none powered usb hub(the hub did have an optional power cable).

If you own the 360 HD DVD add on then you have 4 usb hubs.

I'm in the same boat. This is a minor nuisance, but it's not going to deter me from getting the game.

I already have a 4 port USB hub I got from as swag from a tech con and it doesnt need external power so I'm fine.

Xbox 360 controllers are power hungry. So I guess the Rock band ones are no different.

I have to plug my USB Xbox 360 controller into a USB slot on my PC, because if I plug it into the USB slot on my Logitech G15 keyboard, I get a message saying that there is not enough power to use my controller.

bummer, maybe it needs power due to the excess power draw from the instruments

Wow, that's quite an embarrassing design flaw. Not the end of the world, just silly. Is it 1996 again already?

there is a pretty good chance that if you already have a hub that doesnt require an external power supply, that it wont work. there are two types of hubs, ones with and ones without power supplies. the ones with them are required for high powered usb devices, which is likely the case with the instruments. im actually not surprised about this one bit...

it's too bad they didn't give you the option of daisy-chaining 2 devices. thus no external power supply needed.

@Nearly everyone

This is not a design flaw. It's not a throwback to the past. You're unpowered USB hub will probably not work.

The instruments will most likely need the extra power. Suggesting that your unpowered hub will work is like suggesting that you could probably power four wireless 360 controllers off 2 AA batteries. It won't work.

Anything to stop my 360 from sucking so much power out of the wall that it spews actual plasma from the fan-holes is much appreciated.

who's genius idea was it to put only 3 USB ports on the 360 in the first place?

@Arrested Developer:

So would it be safe to plug all of the instruments into the standard USB ports on the 360 then?

This is fucktarded.

Lol, I already decided to only buy the game itself once they said the instruments would only be available in bundle form. I'll just use my GHII and III guitars until I can buy a drum by itself next year. I probably won't buy the strat unless it really is that fucking awesome.

Yes, USB power is only 5volts. Split that to 4 devices and thats 1.25volts per device, which is not likely enough juice to power the instruments.

Now here's something that might work, try and use 2 USB hubs if you don't want to power those suckers up with a big brick of an AC adapter. USB hubs are practically given away now as Free After Rebate items from many tech/electronics stores, so its possible you might know someone with a spare or 30 sitting in a box in the garage.

Well the 2 integrated USB ports don't house enough current to power 2 of the Rock Band peripherals let alone 4. Oh well. We'll deal since the game will rock.

I don't see the problem, your x360 would probably RR before you bought the game anyway. Go for the Wii! Oh wait, that system might not die.

A bigger problem than the PSU may be finding 3 other people to make asses of themselves playing the game.

I hope to all things holy that it's just a regular plug, and not some chunky, more cushion for the pushin AC adapter.

Sure it's been said, but USB ports do not provide that much power (not exactly sure how much) so the more devices you add to each port, you basically have to give them some extra juice or they simply won't work.

More than likely if you're only playing with 1 or maybe 2 controllers you probably do NOT need to plug in the power adapter. If the game seems unresponsive then plug in the AC Adapter.

You can ALSO find USB cords that would plug into both USB ports on front of the xbox, and might provide more power to the USB hub so you may not need the power adapter, at all.

Not sure how risky this is, but I assume if your instruments aren't getting enough power then they simply won't work. (Had this experience with USB devices on PC.

Let me try to clarify/reiterate. If you're playing with three instruments, the built-in 360 USB ports should work just fine. Within a USB-equipped system, each port is generally allocated the requisite power reliably.

The problem comes when you plug in a hub, which splits one of those ports into four. The same voltage from that one port must be supplemented for most devices to work. (Even one device plugged into an unpowered hub can have issues.)

If the controllers have lower than standard power requirements, you could try using two unpowered hubs plugged into different 360 ports, with two controllers on each. I'm pretty doubtful about your chances of success, though.

And SourGr8pes, it will be a giant AC adapter block, because the voltage into the hub requires conversion to 5 volt DC from 110 volt AC (in the US).

Blame Microsoft for only having 3 USB ports. Who includes an odd number of USB ports, anyway? I thought they always came in pairs.

Not that big a deal, though. Jesus. It's not something to light the torches, wield the pitchforks, and tie the nooses over.

Ugh that figures. First we don't get wireless, now we get a dumbass wall plug. Grand. Still can't wait to play the drums, but I'll just do so without having multiple instruments playing I guess. Either that or buy another surge protector. =P
