What Monkey Island 2 would look like with the CryEngine photo

Ever considered what LeChuck’s Revenge would look like if it was created using the same engine the visual powerhouse title Cryis uses? At least one guy has. Hannes Appel is doing the silly -- and absolutely awesome -- right now: he’s making a Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge level using CryEngine 2. Below the fold is a brief cinematic trailer he made that showcases the classic 2D adventure game with scrumptious 3D and beautiful modeling stuff.

Appel has a Web site and a few more videos for this project, as well as few screenshots, details, and programming notes. He also has a gaggle of other projects that may or may not tickle your fancy. One caveat: the rest of his stuff isn’t strictly games-related, but the man does love CryEngine 2.

This video (and a few of his others) has appeared on the Internet before, so please don’t have a heart attack in the rush to type “OLD!” in the comments. We just thought the video was too cool not to share and we agree with the sentiment: MI in 3D totally rocks.

[Thanks, Sam!]

Website doesn't seem to be working. Is this the same guy who did some levels from movies like bladerunner? If so, his work is amazing.

Nice work but the one thing the guy brought over from Crysis is the lack of interactivity which is a big part of the Monkey Island games.

He definitely captured the essence. I love the last bit with Guybrush underwater.

Wow. The lighting and atmosphere make this look straight up pre-rendered. Makes me wish more games would use this style. Awesome.

Hmm the website seems to be down. That's the correct web-address though. Looks like it might be back up again sometime tomorrow.

That's why CryEngine rocks.

Holy. Fucking. Shit. That is impressive. It's so beautiful. That scene underwater with the light scattering would make my computer explode.

He used to be co-host of the former German video games TV show called Giga Games. I read that he works for CryTek now.

CryEngine is still going so strong, I can't even begin to imagine what Crysis 3 will look like on a high end PC.
