Probably the closest would be the Fallout series, with New Vegas being within epsilon of "great"
I have a feeling it'll be a long time before I play anything that sparked my excitement for videogames since I played the original so many moons ago...
There's five God Of War games that range in quality from Very Good (Ghost of Sparta) to best handheld game ever (Chains Of Olympus) to genre-defining excellence (I and II).
God Of War III itself was excellent...it's just that it was so unrepentantly angry and so brutally and extravagantly violent that people didn't really know what to think when it was over.
Then there's the Halo and Call Of Duty series, both of which fall under the "If you liked one of them, you'll most likely like all of them" byline.
Metal Gear is a consistently great series, but it's not alone.
Core Mario games as well, both 2D and 3D.
Metroid. And yes, I know there is such a thing as "Other M", but I liked that as well.
Bit.Trip (Holmes, why did you not mention this?!)
Some others might qualify as well, depending on if you interpret two games as being a series.
MGS
Zelda
Uncharted (if you're counting newer titles)
Monster Hunter
Pokemon
Mario
Final Fantasy
Super Smash Bros
Assassin's Creed
Call of Duty
(Hang me for those last two. Hate them for being milked, but in the context of this topic, don't fix what's not broken. Especially considering both AC3 and BO2 look to be changing things up.)
Series that have good starts but need more installments:
Littlebigplanet
Star Wars Battlefront
Hawk games (Warhawk, Starhawk)
Portal
I meant "up-and-comers" as in the time they have been around. The Metal Gear series started in 1987. Relatively speaking, Uncharted and God of War are much more recent series.
Don't get me wrong: I agree with you. Uncharted, in particular, is one of the best series ever made. But I am curious to see if this consistency holds up for another 15 years. :)
This statement made me laugh... Uncharted's had a whole trilogy and a handheld game. God of War is on whichever number its on, including a couple of handheld games.. And Pikmin is a fumbled Nintendo series, which is every series other then Mario, Zelda and maybe Kirby (yes, I put Metroid in the fumbled pile..)..
Only reason any of these (other then fumbled Pikmin series) don't fall into the consistently catagory, is what? Because they've only started over this past decade and don't have 20+ years under their belt?.. You know how many series that limits the playing field to, if we look at it that way?
Honestly, if the game has more then 2 entries, specially if it has more then 2 PLUS handheld iterations, then I think they're more then fair game --SPECIALLY-- if the series is of the "every year" variety, like Assassin's Creed (which is of this gen only, has 4 games in the console pile and like 1 or 2 in the handheld pile, at the moment). Considering that series has been consistently churned out, but has had a lack of consistency through the entire thing, I'm pretty sure it's just as worthy to be judged right along with any Metal Gear Solid (which is going to be similarly at its 5th game, right along with Assassin's Creed soon, despite having other games in the same series, as handhelds and otherwise..)
Honestly though, I don't know what I'd say the greatest series, consistently, of all time is, because I don't really think any of them have been all that consistent.. I mean read Tony's article about NSMB2 and see how Mario games have been great, but they've been far from consistent. Zelda falls int he same boat.. Metroid does too.. Metal Gear (the entire series, NES and PSP games included).. Mega Man's had its ups and downs.. Castlevaina disappeared on consoles for a while, for a reason.. Don't even tell me you think Final Fantasy's been consistently great when every new game comes with a new set of bitching and slap fights.. Contra barely even exists as a series.. And Sonic's been a joke in the industry for how long now?
Shit, at this point I'm willing to give it to CoD -even if I don't agree with it- because its been the most consistent overall: 6 hours of single player and tons of multiplayer for whoever can constantly look at it for the next year. It has to sell ridiculously well, every year, for some reason, doesn't it?
Max Payne.
Fable.
Ratchet and Clank.
But mostly Halo. Halo's been actually getting better and better since ODST (Anniversary included).
Even the spinoffs are quite entertaining, though Rocket Slime takes a bit to get into.
Oh, and I just remembered VR Missions, too! That was just stupid and unnecessary.
Always preferred Splinter Cells realism over MGS' gamey stealth mechanics.
The inventory is not intuitive to browse.
Screw cinematic games, I'm not playing games so I have to watch 40 min long cutscenes.
If any game series deserves praise for consistently being awesome and reinventing itself in an exciting way it is Zelda.
What I'm trying to say is, MGS3 is the only one which is truly stand-out great and/or hasn't shown its age yet.
The most consistently great series would have to be something like Kirby or Pac Man.
If you're looking for the Best studio ever, then Rockstar. Cause those guys have been impeccable with their taste in videogames since 1998.
People, get real.
it's one of the funnest and most unique games ever made.
love the card system plus the lovely and colouful style is just amazing.
even the VR missions was an awesome game since it gave you some practice and new techniques.
i think the Metroid games are close to perfection, pokemon, mario and maybe Zelda.
i also think Virtua Fighter series as well as Tekken are improving in each iteration.
all in all i think most Nintendo franchises are consistent in terms of quality and fun
lol im sorry but GTA are one of the most boring games i've ever played.
each iteration dwindles down in terms of fun factor. only GTAIII and Vice City are the only redeeming games they have.
plus they try too hard to make a serious story but it always fall flat face in the end.
please don't even mention Rockstar Games in the same pedestal as Nintendo and others.
get real.
i would also like to add Shin Megami Tensei games since t hey always try something new and innovating in each installment.
Ridiculous nonsensical story and characters
Way too linear
Cutscenes were too long.
And you couldn't even lean or hide against a wall correctly.
MGS3 was awesome though
Another good one is Fatal Frame, which has yet to disappoint me.

Persona is the obvious choice as far as I can see; long running, and excellent games at every step. The rest of the SMT games are pretty damned good too.
Bioware / Black Isle's infinity engine games are close enough related in setting and theme that I'd consider them a series, and whilst some may have been better than others, they're all still excellent games.
Zelda
Metroid
Kirby
Street Fighter
Devil May Cry (Yes 2 was bad, but not that bad)
Castlevania
Metal Gear
Deus Ex (Yes even Invisible War)
Assassin's Creed
Counter-Strike
Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.
It's up there though.
Well there's Zelda! I mean, even the spinoffs were- Oh wait Phantom Hourglass was crap...
Pokemo- No... Gen 4 was pretty bad...
Not a lot of people liked Sunshine... Sonic 06 was the ET current gen consoles, FFXIII was garbage...
The only long-standing franchise I can think of with a completely spotless record is Kirby, which is kind of funny if you think about it.
All consistently awesome.
