Anyway, how in the hell is a game thats 7 years old at this point inelligible? And for that matter, how do you get off comparing Pimmin to God of War and Uncharted. Pikmin gives consistently good, and God of War gives consistently fantastic. There's no comparing the two.
Ask 100 different people get 100 different answers. I'll just stick with Half-Life. Final answer.
Civilization has also all been very very playable.
You could also say the same about Deus Ex (the second was good damnit, it just wasent as good as the first) and Fallout but since they have so few games to their name its hard to say.
Also I don't think I ever played a bad gta game either.
I just wanted to add that, as I think that is another series that is consistently fantastic. :)
Mario Prevails!
Metal Gear AC!D was frigging amazing!
I would have also included Final Fantasy and Resident Evil but that would have been years ago.
I didn't mind Raiden. I know that was a problem for a lot of people, but I didn't mind him.
The gameplay was great, sure.
But for a game that was so incredibly story driven, the story was a mess, pretending to be deep and philosophical but it was just a mess. Nonsensical and pretentious at the same time. In that department, it was a huge let down.
Beyond that, every game series I've played has had a few low points, except for a handful which don't get many sequels at all, like Half Life. (I was going to say "Metroid", too, but then I remembered "Other M" is a thing that exists.)
I still get excited about new Marios, Castlevanias, Metal Gears et all (Final Fantasy has had a long string of disappointments to the point where word of a new FF no longer makes me even slightly interested) but I can't think of any that have been so consistently good that I expect every new announcement to mean a guaranteed fantastic experience. (Everything I hear about the new 3DS Castlevania makes me hate Konami more, for instance.)
For my money, despite Other M, a new Metroid announcement would make me more excited than a new Metal Gear announcement.
But the far most consistent game experiences brings Mario and God of War. At least I can't name a better platformer or hack&slash adventure.
Yakuza or Ryuu Ga Gotoku games(yes, I have played the Japanese ones too)
Zelda
SMT Persona series
Street Fighter(I, Alpha, II, III, IV)and some spin-offs(xTekken,xXman)
Trauma Center
I know I probably shouldn't respond, as to call Mario games "just" Mario games is ridiculous, but I'll indulge you. Mario has been consistently great since 1985, there's no way around this. The Mario games have served as archetypes for so many different kinds of games, and indeed genres, and has done so at a rate no other franchise has with a fairly consistent freshness considering we're talking about a character that has been spun off for nearly as long as he's been around.
Rayman Origins is a great game, no doubt, but the question isn't "how good is Rayman Origins compared to the core Mario games". The question is "what is the most consistently great series of all time", and to even place Rayman next to Mario on that front is silly, let alone dismiss Mario for Rayman altogether.
My vote is Yakuza. All great beat-em-ups with rpg mechanics and hilariously zany Japanese plots. The cut-to-ribbons Y3 was still a good game in its own right, and Dead Souls handled its mechanics well once my discombobulation fixed itself.
We have harsh words.
The one series I've always seen do at least something differently good with each rendition is Zelda. No Zelda game is bad, not even the DS ones.
If you do have to throw that one out for being too new, there's also Marvel vs. Capcom, Planet Puzzle League, Starcraft and Warcraft. I'd also agree with Themuad on Deus Ex. Invisible War did make a couple of bad mistakes(universal ammo), but was ultimately an excellent title with unrealistic expectations to live up to.
The off shoots of the series like Peacewalker and Acid have had interesting ideas at least, hopefully they'll finally try something new with the mainline series.
