I'm just going primarily on their comments that Final Fantasy had dropped below the bar of quality that people expect (usually meaning reboot time) and this name "Type 0" represents the start of something, hence, zero.
It would also make sense to have a premier team working on redefining the series, so you get a solid rebooted entry.
Of course, there's no telling what it will actually be.
tl;dr - things fans actually fucking want.
Perhaps they're remaking the classics? Like FF6. Which would be god damn amazing.
Not that we'll see shit until 2012 at the earliest, odds are.
I hope they announce a "Final Fantasy" PS3 collection at this conference instead of a new game. I'm glad their announcement at Jump Festa was a port of 'Final Fantasy IV' and its sequel to the PSP. Just complete the friggin' games you started developing before announcing new ones!
LOL.
Hang on...Type Zero...
...holy crap. Is Square making a Patlabor RPG? If so, first day purchase. O_O
This site gives Final Fantasy XIII a lot of unnecessary hate. You all need to chill a bit. I'm pretty sure that most of the 5.5 million people who bought it enjoyed it, myself included. Sure, they stumbled a bit on Final Fantasy XIV but they'll learn from those mistakes, fix them and by mid next year have what I am confident will be one of the best MMOs out there. Just because it's not VI doesn't mean it sucks.
I'm starting to agree.
@Dv8thwonder why did you even post in this thread? jeez
Nice avatar, by the way. It's fitting.
I love the series but shit's gotta grow up or do something more than angsty manboygirl fights angsty girlmanboy for control of the love of the moon.
Angst-ridden? Maybe in Final Fantasy VII and VIII. They got over that pretty fast. And then only one character apiece. On disc 1. If you refer to the main quest, then each one is different, or at least as different as every other game is from it's peers. If you refer to subquests, they come up with new ones in each game. If you want me to explain why any character in the Final Fantasy series is deep and well-developed then name one, and I will.
The '20-year old gameplay mechanics' that have changed with every game since the series began, hm? I'll criticize Call of Duty, then, for using the same gameplay mechanics of Unreal Tournament 1. The battle systems of Final Fantasy have always been deep and strategic, even if some have been less well designed than others. Final Fantasy fans like them that way. We don't want shooter or hack and slash gameplay.
The depth of the series is immense.
Sorry dude, but you don't speak for the fans that have stuck with the series and expected it to actually MATURE sometime over the years. I've played since FF since elementary school, and the height of the series gameplay wise I think, was XII (even though the story sucked). XIII pretty much has been the worst FF I've played gameplay wise after all these years. I see nothing deep or strategic about hoping the enemy doesn't randomly one shot your main character, before you have time to throw up buffs, or get a taunt in. And if for some reason you can explain how GoGo from VI is deep and well-developed, you get a cookie. :)
If this is a reboot that gives me a main character in the prime of his or her life, with a realistic attitude about the world, then count me in. I'm sick of the new games turning all the heroes into cliche anime characters.
Final Fantasy shooter
Reboot. Like going back to the roots. 16 bit style.
