What is Final Fantasy IV: The After Years? [Update] photo

Is there a sequel coming? Is it one of those mobile games we missed? And what the hell kind of crap name is "The After Years" anyway?

Yesterday the keen eyes of the staff of Siliconera found a trademark for "The After Years” registered by Square Enix on the European Patent and Trademark database. The name reminds us of Final Fantasy IV: The After, a Japanese mobile game we gave up hope of ever seeing. Could this be related?

And now in an update, they've found that the U.S. database has a similar entry. Can we get excited about this? Is this going to be a DS game? Or an iPhone game? What do you think?

[Update: The guys at C3 are saying that they've heard that this is a WiiWare (and presumably a Xbox Live and PSN) game. Grain of salt, people.]

This sounds like something relevant to my interests!!!

Man. That would be kind of cool, this image of what this is that I have in my head.

Wait... a sequel to FF6?!?!?!?!
^_^
This is the best thing possible (short of an FF7 remake for me)

not getting excited until i see some pics. Squeenix has often let me down when these kind of rumors surface.

Please correct the title from VI to IV. I don't like to shit my pants this early in the morning.

You wrote "Final Fantasy 6" in the headline, Dale. You might want to change that before you cocktease millions of readers. Not that more FF4 is a bad thing by any means...

Yea, "FFIV: The After", as it was called in Japanland, was a mobile phone game that takes place after FFIV (oh, I get it!) where you play as Cecil and Rosa's son.

I'd rather have a sequel to FF6, but FF4 is not a bad alternative.

I kind of hope this involves a domestic release of the cell phone game because it looked pretty sweet...

God, I used to fantasize about this game when I was a kid. US databases eh? This is highly relevant to my interests.

For what it's worth, the guys at 1up (or maybe former guys now. Can't remember) also heard this is going to be a WiiWare title.

I'm concerned about them digging up a such an old, beloved game to make a sequel. But I'll try to remain hopeful. I'll play it regardless.

Wait, SquareEnix making what could be an XBLA/PSN game? That's just silly, but I'd love to see them actually do it.

I highly doubt it'll be a XBLA PSN title since Squeenix hasn't really tested those waters yet. FF4 remake is on DS. FF4 after party will be on wii.

I already know the Story of this game, and its not great. But since it has FF4 written on it, I have to force myself to buy it.

I hope it comes to the US as a DS/WiiWare title. That'd be awesome. I just played FFIV for the first time last fall and loved it.

I wouldn't doubt it coming to all the download services should it appear on one (and WiiWare'd be a given, among them), but I really want this to be unleashed on DSiWare (or whatever it's called). Imagine, connectivity bonuses! If not those, then simply the sensibility on making it available to the same players who've had a go at the last (two) outing(s).
