What is Bethesda's 'World of Warcraft type MMO'? photo

As the ongoing Fallout MMO legal battle between Bethesda Softworks and Interplay rages on, details of a Bethesda MMO have surfaced.

According to transcripts from the court case, the developer is working on a "secret World of Warcraft type MMO." The project apparently has "tens of tens of millions of dollars" invested in it, and "close to a hundred people" working on the title, said to be in development since 2006. The dev timetable for the game is said to be four years, which means the game should start officially rearing its head within the next year or so.

Bethesda has allegedly filed to have these court records redacted, presumably to hide the fact that its working on a "secret World of Warcraft type MMO." I mean, that's what the "secret" part is all about, right? Unfortunately, it's out there now, and now we just have to speculate -- what's Bethesda getting up to in the MMO space?

I could see them take the Elder Scrolls series online. I mean, imagine having the entirety of Tamriel set in an MMO. Now, granted, I'm not a fan of their inability to balance gameplay systems, but it would take Elder Scrolls and questing to a whole new level which I'd be down for.

So long as they don't stop making single player Tamriel advantures I'll be happy, and I say this depsite the fact I feel that Oblivion was a polished turd compared to Morrowind, which was a horribly disfigured genius that needed some surgeons [i.e. modder coders] to go in and fix Bethesda's mess.

I wonder if they ever hired the modders responsible for the infinitely better bodies and faces to replace their own artists..

I think that they mean 'WoW like MMO' as in just a large scale. I can't see Bethesda making such a dumb move as making their MMO just like WoW.

I'm pretty sure they made a statement about it being an Elder Scrolls game though. I remember hearing something about how they wanted to see it happen.

As long as Todd Howard's team sticks to making TESV, I don't care if Beth pumps out an MMO on the side. They're a large enough company now to juggle several projects at once. And considering the sky-high sales of the last TES and Fallout entries, I highly doubt they would abandon their single-player RPGs. You don't just quit making games that push 6 million units...

I would certainly hate the Elder Scrolls series in an MMO type-of game.

Is that the direct quote from court documents? "World of Warcraft-type MMO?" Keep in mind, the person writing that up probably doesn't know a ton about MMOs. WoW and its genre are synonymous to a lot of non-gamers. You know, kind of like people who think Grand Theft Auto is the end-all be-all of videogame violence.

Also about the horse armor I mean cmon guys if this was real life and you bought a nice horse wouldn't you want to protect it from orcs and such, personally I would put chainsaw all over my horsey.... But in the game I always rode the pretty unicorn or shadowmere....I was curious as to why everytime I get off my unicorn it tries to kill the first person to look at its horn, and my unicorn has a big horn, but seriously why did the unicorn mount try to kill fucking everything in that game without provocation

Don't do it, Bethesda. This will kill you. Nobody wants another WoW. Those dumb enough to still enjoy it are, well, still playing it, and those smart enough to realize what a casual moneysucker it is and how badly it hurt the MMO genre in general don't want anything that's supposed to be a WoW-clone or WoW-killer.

Fingers crossed on a console MMO...gaming's most ambitious genre still isn't involved in it's most ambitious platforms...not quite sure why that is so...

ES:Oblivion and Fallout 3 were massive disasters? Really? I missed that memo completely.

Does anyone think Bethesda can pull of an MMO with absolutely NO multiplayer game experience at all? Talk about a massive disaster.

If they make an MMO out of The Elder Scrolls and discontinue the standard rpgs, I will die inside. Not singly because the appeal behind the series is the immersive nature of the gameplay.
