While Anthony Burch -- Destructoid’s own bearded-stud and Internet video star -- was doing his thing on the show floor of PAX ’09, he stumbled upon Dominic Armato, the voice of Guybrush Threepwood. Perhaps in the name of
JOURNALISM or simple humor (these things are one in the same, right guys?), Burch asked Armato what he thought about Destructoid. In Threepwood’s voice, Armato replied.
Did he say we are the best blog ever? Did he shower us with minutes of praise and talk about Brad Nicholson’s muscles or Jim’s monocle? Did he talk about how f’ing metal our community is? No, no-no, and no. But he did say something that was
sort of nice.
Give
this a listen.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Now that's just nice, saying that without specifying what site IS the worst.
Starts with a K, ends in otaku.
I visit Kotaku all the time, and I honestly feel that if nothing else, the Kotakuites at least don't have a rediculous belief in "games as art" that simply radiates from this site.
I'll be honest; I never liked high society art. It always struck me as elitests imposing their view on what a medium should be upon the commoners, when it is the commoners that bring meaning to the art and not the high society types. It is because of this dislike of art as defined by critics creating a gap between the layman and the medium that I feel destructoid is the absolute worst gaming blog - the firm belief that games should elevate beyond enjoyment for the massesis stupid, as what could be greater than entertaining millions? Certainly the answer is not to create games for niches with deep stories and quirky gameplay, as that merely feeds the divide between making the world better through entertaining everyone and trying to make yourself better than the rest of the world through the creation of "art" that is above the understanding and the willingness of interest of the common man.
See: http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/Topher+Cantler/the-importance-of-having-a-f-cking-avatar-142205.phtml
The fuck are you talking about? Rape games, get with it.
After reading your comments I can only deduce that you are a sense making god!
oddly enough, "get an avatar" is a very common counter argument.
Gotta love monkey island :D

Did you even READ what he wrote, or were you too caught up in deciphering his massive text block to be bothered actually understanding what he said.
So if you are not interested in Art, stop complaining about it "being elitist". It's not, it's just a topic you have no clue about. That's okay, but don't feel threatened by it for christ sake.
Games would still be like Pacman, if people wouldn't experiment with the medium. Some things work and are taken into the mainstream, most are not. Thats just nature (and Art at the same time). It's part of the process that is called "Evolution". If you stop being so conservative about it, you might learn something!
Btw, adventuregames were also something "elitist" and "artsy" 30 years ago...
Yeah, how dare we hope to get game to a more sophisticated level and try to experiment with it instead of keeping it a small reassuring medium to the masses that releases sequels and clones and not new bold material, how dare we.
If Bazin heard out you said, even if he was a movie critic, he would flip the fuck out in is grave.
"I never liked high society art. It always struck me as elitests imposing their view on what a medium should be upon the commoners,"
I agree entirely, the standard of art in society is commonly decided by the wealthy ponces who control the art scene.
"when it is the commoners that bring meaning to the art and not the high society types."
Pardon my french, but the commoners should go fuck themselves, whether or not something is art is decided upon by the artist. If someone creates something, he decides whether or not his creation is art. That is the difference between a Urinal and Fountain by Marcel DuChamp, physically they are identical, but it is in the context that one sends a message, and the other blends into the background.
"It is because of this dislike of art as defined by critics creating a gap between the layman and the medium"
The separation of laymen and art is purely because laymen do not understand art. Most people look at abstract expressionist works and comment "my five year old could have painted that"
The truth is, the modern layman cannot find his own ass with both hands. Anyone that could argue intelligently to the contrary, is not a layman.
"I feel destructoid is the absolute worst gaming blog - the firm belief that games should elevate beyond enjoyment for the masses is stupid, as what could be greater than entertaining millions?"
You could give everyone a stick and they would find a reasonable amount of entertainment out of it. Entertainment is a shallow and pointless pursuit, when it merely causes stagnation, causing the average consumer to sit on his ass all day instead of actually doing something, instead of learning, or improving themselves. Art > Entertainment.
"Certainly the answer is not to create games for niches with deep stories and quirky gameplay, as that merely feeds the divide between making the world better through entertaining everyone and trying to make yourself better than the rest of the world through the creation of "art" that is above the understanding and the willingness of interest of the common man."
The creation of art is for the purpose of enlightenment, not exclusion. The masses can be entertained by watching paint dry while commenting on how much they enjoy the Simpsons and Family Guy.
The point at which art became incomprehensible for the common man is when artists finally understood their medium, when they realized that an image is not itself, words are merely symbols, and that all meaning in art is imparted upon by the viewer by expecting to see art. Those who do not understand art are, quite simply, not smart enough.
One should never look to the masses for guidance in culture, otherwise McDonalds would be fine cuisine, Coca Cola would be considered a fine wine, Stanley Kubrick would be considered a hack while Michael Bay is praised for his brilliant use of unnecessary explosions, Call of Duty 4000000 would be considered a better game than Secret of Monkey Island, just because the graphics are prettier and it features more lead objects passing through people's torsos than any previous Call of Duty game.
To borrow from Nietzsche, it is not the common masses that should lead, as it is the overman, who draws his strength from creative forces, it is the artists, the writers, the philosophers, and the composers, who should lead.
You misunderstood me. I feel that gaming should be an expanding medium that lends itself to the masses. I don't feel it should be small and reasuring, and I certainly don't think it should give up on experimentation. However, I do believe gaming should be about entertainment, and the more people a game entertains, the better it is for gaming. The bold new material should be material that widens the appeal of gaming to new audiences; it should not make gaming more restrictive and appeal only to "expert" gamers.
Also, I think Hcapt is Bobby Kotick in disguise!
Hcapt's argument fails where most arguments fail on the internet: he tries to oversimplify his argument by painting everything with one broad-ass brush. Games can be art without those that enjoy them suddenly becoming "elitists". I've heard a few knocks on Dtoid, having an "elitist" community is a first, though! I can only assume that someone who would make such an argument has never spent time with a really elitist individual.
We're making cock jokes and debating about the merits of cel-shaded graphics, for God's sake.
oh wait it's jokes.
I aim to please.
@ H Capt
Then could you please explain extremely profitable, extremely expensive works of Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan (if anyone questions whether or not this man is an artist, watch Memento), or Terry Gilliam?
Art can easily be profitable, despite the goal of art is not to make a profit. There are genius auteurs in the film industry, why do we not see this in the game industry? Is it because there is no inherit desire for artistry in video games? No, and Destructoid is a large enough community to show that people desire art, they desire something created with a little bit of intellect. Games are an artistic medium, just like painting, sculpting, music, film, television, woodworking, computing, and the crafting of small wooden ducks with sombreros.
Thank goodness for the occasional publisher that is willing to promote a unique game idea instead of a sure thing.
@HCapt: Why shouldn't artists make money? Those characters aren't going to design/model themselves! As far as I know, the masses seem to like those snazzy graphics that 3D Artists put together. You seem to have absolutely no concept on how videogames are made.
Kotaku ain't that bad.
