Wet your pants time: Chrono Trigger DS dated for November

Wet your pants time: Chrono Trigger DS dated for November photo
     DS

While browsing the cblogs, I saw Coonskin's Chrono Trigger post and realized, "Sh*t, I was supposed to post that today." Of course, since I don't claim to be a journalist, I can use this to illustrate my blogger integrity, and then someone will write a column about what an imperfect douchebag I am. Go for it, internet! I commend you.

At any rate, as you can see from the press release after the jump, it looks like we are confirmed on new dungeons and what is called the "Arena Mode", which is where I'll bet that WiFi play could come in. November 25th is the day we've all been waiting for, which means you have exactly 3 months and 7 days left until you can get your paws on the real deal. Next time a Gamestop employee asks if you want to preorder something, scream "F*CK YES" and throw your money at him for a copy of Chrono Trigger. I guarantee you he'll be so scared of you he'll never ask again.

[Thanks, Brett!]

This happened to me at work today. I asked some guy if he wanted to preorder something and he screamed out, "OMFG FUCK YES" and threw $5 at me. I screamed back, "CHRONO FUCKING TRIGGER" and he was like "FUCK YEAH" and I took his money and asked if he wanted to preorder anything else.

As much as I loved the original in high school, my interest is 0 for this game, I'd take a sequal over basicly a remake that i already played on my PSP.

I wish they had given it the FFIV treatment. I would have loved to see it done.

It's fine and all if they want to keep it "true to the original". But if they're gonna be lazy and spend a month tweaking a ROM and then charge $40 for the game, that's just arrogant. Seeing as I own the cart though, I'd see it as silly to pay for a ROM hack of a game I own. I guess for all the kids that never played it that's OK... but will they be ones to buy this?

I've tried the whole emulation, and I actually quit the game. I think if I actually had a controller in hand, I could actually stick to this game and try to get as many endings as I could. Even if it's a lazy port, for a guy who never even got through the court scene, a lazy port of a great game is better than a great port of a shit game.

Also, consider the alternative. In my opinion, it's better to pay $40.00 for a cart of a DS game than drop $40.00 for a used copy on a system that I can't take with me.

I am aware, yes. But a lot of people can be disillusioned about a game, hence why FF7 is so popular even though it's crap, and truly epic games like Yggdra Union elicit a big "huh?" from most of the supposed "hardcore" RPG players.

Quick run-down, because I'm tired of talking about it as of late:

-Combat system is incredibly flawed. Area-based effects without any ability to position them or yourselves? LETS MAKE MOST OF OUR ABILITIES USELESS ALL OF THE TIME HURR HURR

-Combat system is based around allowing you to do combo attacks, but combos are actually much, much less effective than simply attacking normally. Thus the entire system is built around a mechanic that DOESN'T WORK.

-Game is incredibly simple and generic. No challenge to any fights, best strategy is "spam best attack until enemy is dead". There are a couple of gimmick fights, but even they are simple and generally apply the same strategy, just that you have to fight them in a certain order or something.

-Plot is terrible and full of holes not related to time-travel holes.

-Characters are horribly generic and boring, aren't developed very well at all.

Only positive about the game is that the graphics are fucking astoundingly beautiful, I consider the game to be visually superior to most PS2 games.

The game is chock full of pretty nasty holes, people just ignore them for god knows why.

I think you just lost your Retroforce Fun Team membership card right there.
Seriously, though. I agree with the former but not the latter of the two points quoted above. Frog and Robo alone are two of the best RPG characters ever. Especially when you allow for the fact that when this game came out every RPG hero was a generic guy with a sword who has amnesia.

"-Combat system is based around allowing you to do combo attacks, but combos are actually much, much less effective than simply attacking normally. Thus the entire system is built around a mechanic that DOESN'T WORK."

All I can say is that you must not have been using this mechanic correctly. I can think of a number of boss fights were correct and intelligent use of combos made the fight go much more smoothly, and sometimes were necessary.

"-Characters are horribly generic and boring, aren't developed very well at all. "

This depends on when you played the game. If you played it when it first came out, like I did, you'd see that the only reason the characters look generic now is because so many games copied Chrono Trigger's classic, endearing characters. Also, Marle, Lucca, Robo, and Frog all saw signficant development, though a lot of it game from optional sidequests.

"-Plot is terrible and full of holes not related to time-travel holes. "

Are you sure you weren't playing Chrono Cross? What are the plot holes? Chrono Trigger's plot was actually rather beautiful in its simplicity. It came before the time when Square started turning its games into massive tomes of plot and metaphysics that left a gamer scratching his head.
    Gen Eric Gui's Avatar
Gen Eric Gui at 08/18/2008 23:55
In reverse order, because that's how I roll:

-Actually, Cross covers itself very nicely; it fills in many of Trigger's holes while not making too many of its own. I love how people rag on CC's plot without even trying to understand it.

I'd articulate on some of the plot holes, but this isn't really the place, and I've forgotten most of them because I haven't played CT in years, ever since I realized I didn't enjoy it at all and that it was a piece of crap. I just remember making a big list of them on a forum somewhere and there were quite a lot.

-I played CT when it first came out(or relatively shortly thereafter. My family was poor and no way we were buying a $90 cart or whatever), and I was pretty excited; I'll admit I liked the game when I was 8-9. It wasn't until after I finished and I picked it back up a little ways later that I realized "Oh wow this game is shit".

As for the characters: Frog is kinda interesting, but they ultimately don't really take him anywhere, and the rest of the heroes are just gutter trash. The only character I consider in any way significantly developed is Magus, and he's a fucking SECRET character.

-If you couldn't get basic non-combo attacks to do more damage you were doing it wrong.

-I have lifetime membership to any retro club ever because I can ace pretty much every single original-series Megaman game. Who gives a shit about CT? I go far more retro than that.

If you are,in fact, talking about Chrono Trigger. Congrats, your pretty cool. Lets take something that is super popular and hate it. Lets pick on every flaw because this is lowest common denominator junk and you are oh so above that. Hating on something that is cool is getting tired.

See we can all play that card.

Don't assume people love this game because it's old. Some just actually think it's a great game all around.

Because there isn't anybody out there who dislikes GTA, Halo, Gears of War, Mario, Zelda, Pheonix Wright or Ratchet and Clank. Nobody. Ever. Anybody who dislikes those games is ONLY hating on them to look cool.

    Totally.

The reason why I couldn't care less is because they're basically doing nothing new with it. I've played Chrono Trigger, and I thought it was very enjoyable. If this game had upgraded visuals, not necessarily 3-D, new dialogue, updated/remixed music, et cetera, THEN I'd be willing to purchase it in a heartbeat.

It's kind of surprisiing that Square Enix hasn't attempted to milk this franchise to death up till now, since it's clear they could have just done this for the GBA and it would have done well. Hell, I'd buy a GBA version. But if it's on the DS like this... well, it just seems like a lazy attempt to get money.

Rainbowblack: "I'd take a sequal over basicly a remake that i already played on my PSP.

I wish they had given it the FFIV treatment. I would have loved to see it done."

First, are you talking about NOT homebrew/emulation?
Second, they already had a "sequel" which is hated by a huge majority of CT fans. I played Chrono Cross with no mind to it being a sequel, and I didn't even like it as a standalone game; I hated the gameplay elements. So I don't think a sequel is a better alternative.

I'm also not sure about the 3D FFIII/FFIV rendering as a good idea. Many fans, myself included, have enjoyed it but agree that the 3D remake leaves something lacking compared to the original. I think having sprites leaves so much more to the imagination about the characters, and not seeing the remake remain true to how you imagined it years ago is a disappointment. Not that FFIV isn't GOOD, it's great, but it's not the same. I think most fans would rather leave it as it is and let their memories/imagination run wild.

I think it's safe to say that this is at least in part fanservice/nostalgia. It would surprise me if Square-Enix used this as a way to reach new fans and revive the franchise, though that'd be a GREAT idea. They could remake Radical Dreamers, and maybe expand it!
While they're at it, they should release FFIV The After in the States!
