Fresh off B-movie videogame
WET, developer A2M might take another swing at developing an original IP. Speaking to
VG247, WET creative director Patrick Fortier confirmed that studio was at least entertaining the idea, but he wasn’t definitive in his response. “That’s definitely something A2M is looking at,” said Fortier, “so yes, that’s certainly a possibility.”
Another possibility is A2M working with Bethesda again. In the same conversation, Fortier said that Big B understands WET’s protagonist and, more importantly, is a swell developer to work with.
“They understand Rubi, they speak the same language as us (since they are developers too, they understand how things work on the floor) and they are consummate professionals, so it’s been nothing but joy collaborating with them,”
We’re guessing we’ll see Rubi again before A2M dabbles in fresh IP again, but still, it’s good to know that the developer hasn’t slammed its foot down on the pedal quite yet.
I hope to God she doesn't come back in anything.
The assumption I make when I ask for original IP is that the new game brings with it a dramatic shift away from norms. The more games I see that are hyped new IP that don't differentiate themselves enough for me to really become interested, the more I begin to think I should just stick with Master Cheif. At least I like and know Halo, even though I've seen it all before.
Why is it that only Nintendo can make Nintendogs? Why can't other companies make something both completely new and with widespread appeal?
Asking for original IP's is fine, as it is assumed we are asking new IP's from developers like Lionhead, Infinity Ward, Epic Games to do something other than a FPS etc, and other stuff they need to do some paradigm breaking [outside of the box thinking [/terry tate ads]
Different genres, different games, but more grindhouse!
A2M - Ass to Mouth.
Nice.
Creating characters that appeal is tricky but still doable. Its not just about how a character looks but also what's underneath that in the personality vault, and there should be enough to entice a player to continue playing, especially in a single player game. If you are pushing a game with a big cast of characters, they need to have something extra. This will differ for some game obviously.
Ruby should have some attitude with those guns, and a sense of courageous humour underfire. I think Geena Davis character in A Long Kiss Goodnight is a fine example of this, where even when she's under pressure of torture, wise cracks are still being made at her captors (if this happens correct if wrong). Swear at the enemy and swear at yourself, laugh and cry in pain when you get shot, all of this counts too.
Wet has potential, but it needs a remix to get it right. Lose the grindhouse bit, as while it seems good, its also very Tarantino, who's influences are very HK, which has been done plenty of times in games since Max Payne and above company, and I honestly don't think this appeals now. A name change in also needed. I do love Ruby's character design though, and I think if she had another supporting character to bounce stuff off, things would be better, in a Kane and Lynch, Army of Two kind of way. Make Ruby a bounty hunter or something, as that's rarely used idea.
As for new IP from A2M, I'd welcome it, so long as you do some deep thinking, and can deliver something fresh or a least coherent, worthwhile take on a genre. Try new ideas out on the small cheap scale too, as that's what XNA and PSN are all about, and from seeds grow plants.
They've made about two dozen titles over the past couple of years, all them licensed kid's games, and they're first wholly original IP is a 15-year old mountain-dew induced EXTREME claptrap of sloppy programming, trite story-telling, and uninspired gameplay.
You know what, screw original IP! How about A2M make a fun game out of their current licenses first. Companies like Capcom and Wayforward didn't groan when they made games off of kids shows and toys or whatever. They treated every game as something that should be good and fun (you know, a game). Some of Capcom's high reputation still comes from their era of fantastic Disney license games from the NES and SNES era, while Wayforwards dedications to good games, even from licences, has allowed them to recently start making original IP's along with remaking older games in the industry (and of course, the return of Shantae).
A2M should gain some skill making their license games fun, then take that skill to making fun, original games.
Hey, just saying. Feel free to disagree with my views, but i'd rather you made suggestions better or worse than mine, than moan at me. Don't shoot the messenger, I'm just replying to the post as passionately as possible, because I hate seeing games with potential (Wet did have some) fail or end up average.
What would you do then, genius? Come on, out with it.
Tarantino's ideas are tired, because HK style stuff is tired. I should know, as I was there when it started in the late 80's early 90's. That's almost 20 years of this HK style crap, and Max Payne 3 wants to bring more of it (yuck).
Of course, feel free to swim in this game, if you love it so.
I probably also wouldn't have gone with the upgrade system. From the comments people have been making about the game and the demo, I think a lot of people got the impression that the moveset is really limited. Or maybe they could have done it the Metroid Prime way and given out the whole moveset for the opening and then made you buy the moves back afterword.
But on a core level, I'm quite satisfied with what they've produced. It's the action game I would've already made if I could have.
