Welcome to the Manhunt 2 circus: Hysteria, idiocy and artistic defense photo

In case you didn't know, Manhunt 2 is released tomorrow, set for a fitting Halloween release date. As expected, the imbecile parade has been out in full force, with panic and fear setting in for the release of this so-called 'violent' videogame (remember, un-sentient plastic is incapable of violence).

We've had Rockstar defending its artistic creativity, and everyone who isn't Rockstar attacking everything else. The parade of over-reaction is far too long and stupid to cram into one frontpage post, so please join me after the jump, won't you? We'll have tea, cakes and more violence pornography than you can wave a blood-drenched crowbar at.

Remember, if you buy Manhunt 2 tomorrow, you will murder someone the next day, and if you read the rest of this article, you'll feel like taking that crowbar to yourself.

  • Rockstar defends creative vision: Did not 'neuter' Manhunt 2:

Rockstar’s vice president of product development Jeronimo Barrera today defended Rockstar's decision to make edits to Manhunt 2, edits necessary to receive an M-rating from the ESRB as opposed to a financially devastating AO.

Barrera denied that compromises to the artistic vision of Manhunt 2 were made. He claims that the content and vision are intact and that they "didn't neuter the game as people say [they] have."

"You know, a lot of people just believe this is a murder simulator and all you do is kill people," Barrera added. "But the reality is that there's a really strong narrative... There are conversations to be had about this game — intelligent conversations. That's what we want to do: get people interested in those [things], rather than ban this game because of X, Y and Z."

The product development VP also suggested that the company would consider Manhunt multiplayer in the future. "Who knows where the Manhunt series is going to go? And that's definitely something that warrants some exploring on our part for sure," he stated when asked about the idea.

As Rockstar continues to fight the game's UK ban, I sit impressed that a man called Jeronimo exists.

  •  Leland Yee warns parents about the evil Manhunt 2:

California's State Senator and vehement antigamer Leland Yee has issued a press release warning parents about the Halloween release of Manhunt 2. In his scaremongering announcement, Yee called hardworking games developers "purveyors of violence," before listing a simple videogame as one of the many dangers of the season.

Not surprisingly, this game is being released on Halloween. Halloween already presents many safety concerns for parents.  With the release of Manhunt 2, parents will now face a new challenge from the purveyors of violence.

It is imperative that parents avoid purchasing this game for their children and always review the video games their children are playing. Ultra-violent, interactive video games such as Manhunt 2 can have negative effects on our children.

By the way, as soon as I see these mythical effects, I'll start to panic. Or rather, I'll just sensibly keep such games away from kids, like a reasonable person can do without resorting to attacks and scare tactics.

  •  Common Sense Media calls game "pornographic violence," amusingly proving the irony of the organization's name:

Common Sense Media is no fan of Manhunt 2, having already called for a parental boycott, but it went one step further at its San Francisco press conference, attacking the game as violent pornography and detailing scenes from the game. The group, for the record, admitted that it didn't know what scenes had and hadn't made the cut, and detailed at least one scene that was no longer in the retail version. Still, no time to do research when you're trying to cause hysteria, eh?

"In my opinion, it’s the most senselessly violent and offensive thing I’ve ever watched," bitched CSM CEO Jim Steyer. "It’s disgusting. It’s so violent, it struck me personally as pornographic violence."

As with others in the reactionary camp, CSM demanded to know what scenes had been cut in order to achieve the game's M-rating. What confuses me is why a group so disgusted by Manhunt 2's content would want to know what had to be left out. Surely it doesn't matter if it's not in the game, and if it's not important, why would such a moral and upstanding group want to view such horrific violence so badly? A little morbid curiosity, maybe?

  •  Aaaand finally, CBS evening news to look at Manhunt 2 controversy tonight:

Gamers with an interest in this whole debacle would do well to keep an eye on CBS tonight as it will provide a detailed look at Manhunt 2's long and bloody story. Hey, at least Fox isn't doing it.

Make sure you stay tuned to CBS, and have a handy Youtube upload ready for those of us on the other side of the sea. It could prove to be quite an interesting end note before the game finally hits stores tomorrow, after the months and months of controversy.

All in preparation for the months of bullsh*t that's going to come.

The true irony is that the more they publicize and demonize it, the more kids will want to play it.

Well im curious when they say they didn't neuter the game they simply mean they took that part of the game out(think about it). As for Senetor Yee as much as I dont particular like the tone of "purveyors of violence" at least he said don't buy this for your kids and watch what your kids are playing the man might have something there.

Man I would have thought rockstar would have learned there lesson about leaving locked content on the disk. If this can be circumvented they will be in for some hurt. With the flack for hot coffee and the flack Bethesda got on Oblivian(I dont think there were really in the wrong on that though and it got blowed off as being more about violence and not that the models had nipples under there underware mesh) you would think Rockstar would be super careful.

I was honestly not a fan of the first game, and this game would not be getting any media attention whatsoever if it weren't for these people.

On the other hand, I can kind of respect Leeland Yee, because he really focuses on educating dumb parents about games they ought not buy for their children. He's no Jack Thompson, on a crusade to oust video games altogether.

These people are masters of the bleeding obvious. OF COURSE parents shouldn't let their kids play this game. IT'S FOR ADULTS. It was made for adults, it's marketed to adults - just like the Saw series and Hostel, etc. The damn thing has a Mature rating so, no, obviously they shouldn't buy this for their kids. Will parents listen? No, probably not, and then they'll complain when they walk in on little Jimmy sawing off some dude's head with a bonesaw. Fucking idiots.

You know, Gordon Freeman's been walking around with a crowbar for years. You don't see people bitching at him, do ya?

Firstly, @ Rockstar: Womayn, please. Show me creativity, then show me vision, and I'll accept your "creative vision". When smothering somebody with a shopping bag for the bloody joy of it is "vision", Andy Warhol s***tting in a can is "art".

Now, I don't defend the UK putting an outright ban on this - hell, that's ludicrous - but to hole up and yell protests that your various modes of gleeful murder are art is insane and exhibits no more logic than the ban does.

They speak English in What?

CBS is going to f*** this piece up. They all are.

Also in the news, people (likely the very same people as those mentioned in the post above) are apparently having a huge pointless shitfit over the upcoming Golden Compass movie.

The conclusion that I have long since drawn from this is that these people are pathetic asshats who have nothing better to do than to have huge pointless shitfits over stuff.

i watched the CBS evening news story, and it wasn't really that bad. Of course they showed how violent the game was, and they talked to actual 'gamers' after playing it, and had them say things like, "its prob the most violent game I've ever played." Thankfully, they included a part about how parents should be responsible and that all video game consoles have parental control settings and that parents shouldn't be uninvolved with doing their job (i think its called parenting or something)

The question is why even make a game like this? Rockstar is the Jerry Springer of the video game industry. Pretends to put on a normal thought provoking show then let's two transvestite hookers tear the shit out of each other to keep viewers watching. I mean seriously, if you are a game dev working 16 hours a day on a game like this maybe you should see a shrink before you hurt someone in real life.

I've barricaded myself in a bomb shelter I've been constructing since I first heard of Manhunt 2's controversy.

I expect upon release carnage worse than anything human history has seen to date. Mass murder and rape in the streets, rioting and looting, families and friends turned on each other.

I advise you all to take what food and supplies you can and lock your selves in your houses... this Halloween will be one to remember.

Iam all for freedom. Iam also not naive to know idiots have freedom and perverse people have freedom. I will defend it until it harms others. While this game will not necessarily harm others physically its a pretty immature(contra the rating)game and to desire to be in the lead characters shoes is nothing short of perverse and sick. Will I defend your right to play this game-yes. I also hope you defend mine when I call you a perverse weirdo and challenge you to grow up and do something more human with your time.

Rockstar still suck for not letting the Simpsons game parody them. Anal bitches. Artistic that up your arses, Rockstar! As for this game, I love me some GTA, but I thought the first game sucked and the early press on this game colours me even less impressed. Stick to what you're good at, Rockstar, being hypocrite babies who make a kickass sandbox game knows as Grand Theft Auto.

CNN did a story aboot this yesterday. http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/10/30/manhunt2.violence.ap/index.html

My favorite part is when the writer calls it a first person killer fantasy game. And since when is calling for a parental ban going to do anything? Shouldn't the parents not be buying this game for their kids anyway? Shouldn't the people calling for the boycott and ban of this game be pointing out that there IS a rating system that's there to prevent kids from buying this game, and shows parents whats in it? I'm so confusled.

Their artistic vision? Seems like BS to me. This game was made the way it was, marketed and draped in the public eye solely for monetary purposes. Were it real artistic vision, the responsible parties wouldn't be so concerned with the amount of copies sold or what venues it has to go through. Rockstar is throwing art under the bus and drawing negative attention to gaming for their own personal gain imo.

I feel sorry for all the other game developers. If I was still in the "industry" I'd probably be pretty steamed by all these tools in congress/gov spouting off pro-censorship bologna.

I'm gonna buy a copy of the game and probably never play it. I haven't booted up my Wii in a couple weeks anyways, might pop it in for fun.

...and then go kill a helpless woodland creature, like a banana slug or something... with a garaut wire.
