Weird clock appears on official Grand Theft Auto 2 Web site [Update] photo
     Rumors

Yes, that headline is not a mistake -- this post is about a clock that has appeared on Rockstar's official site for the ten year old videogame, Grand Theft Auto 2. Wait, make that two clocks. One clock is labeled May 1, with a link to a "present" page; the other is labeled May 22, with a link to a "future" page.

I'm not even going to try to figure out what all of this means. As with most countdowns, there are likely clues scattered all over the site, and I leave it to you guys to figure out. I'm barely a journalist, much less an investigative one. I will say that rumors of Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network ports of Grand Theft Auto 1 and 2 have been floating around for awhile -- could this be related?

Dear Internet Matlocks, please pull on your thinking caps and pull out your magnifying glasses. This is a case that we demand you solve.

[Via CVG]

[Update: Call off the search dogs! Rockstar has contacted us regarding this, and it appears we shouldn't fuss over it. Apparently, those clocks are supposed to display the current time, but something is corrupt. The page "hasn't been touched in years," according to Rockstar's web team.

Feel free to keep hunting for clues only if you're really, really bored.]

Since GTA 1 & 2 are free to download from there, I'm going to assume Rockstar is going to make GTA III available for free as well.

Maybe a remake or WiiWare/XBLA release? *shrugs*

Shame I didn't like GTA2 much...

I believe it's the announcement of GTA2 going free.
Like they did with the first one some years ago.

@MrSadistic: I think only GTA1 is free. Not the second one.

I was excited about GTA3 because I had played GTA 1.

my guesses:
-That first countdown is for a trailer or a port
-Yeah, XBLA port, but w/ multiplayer
-London DLC/expansion for IV announced in late may
-3D treatment for PSP/PS2
-Just a straight up PSP port
-Multiplayer version for PC

Its too soon for it to be DLC for IV but I cant help but wish that it was.

I am going to guess at GTA 2 for the PSP/DS mainly. I wouldn't sniff at PSN/XBLA though.

I'd love to go back to the old school GTA style for a bit.

If memory serves, the entirety of GTA2 on PC was about 40Mb in size. After an inevitable "HD" makeover and some leaderboard coding, I can't imagine GTA2 having trouble meeting the XBLA size limit.

Gouranga!

Hopefully it's a good port though. The PC versions of the first two were far superior than the versions on PSone. Either way I'll get them for the nostalgia value.

I still remember when I first played GTA's shareware demo and how I felt, even my surroundings! Best PC Gamer demo CD evar!

I would think if they were going to release GTA1 and 2 on PSN they would just put up the image files for the two PSX releases for $5.99 each and call it a day.

The games were pretty bad when they were new, I certainly wouldn't pay to play them now. They've been available as free downloads for the PC for years anyway.

obviously going to put it on xbox live or other download.

But who cares. They sucked. I have no idea how they even sold enough keep going.

Oh wait thats right it was the name on the box...grand theft auto, ...

so conversations before the games was purchased must have went like this...

"Look ma I can rob me some of them cars in top down 2d that looks worse than Most of my SNES games, lets buy it! and it's got hookers my gangsta redneck hommies from the south will love it!"

The early GTA games did not suck. I had a lot of fun with GTA 1 back in the day, and still do from time to time. The graphics might be awful compared to what we have now but the game itself is still pretty decent.

I cared about GTA before GTA 3.

I was playing the series since I was like 11 or somethin'. I'm 21 now, so...10 years.

My friend and I, when we were around 13 or 14, used to say "Man, I wish they had a 3d version of this game that wasn't top-down view..."

...Months later, they announced GTA 3, and we flipped. :P

Shit, I was hoping they were going to announce a new PAC like huckabee did. Only instead of pushing for insane tax law changes they'd lobby for more hookers in school or something.

As cool as these mysterious clocks appearing on websites is. I really wish they'd get some new fucking ideas for viral marketing. You don't just HAVE to have a clock counting down to something no-one knows about. Jees.

@Jim Sterling what reason would there be for a GTA II psp port when there is already LCS and VCS? I can't imagine that there would be much market for it since ppl that like LCS or VCS won't play II and ppl that didn't like them won't want to play a GTA game even if it is a top down
