I am so happy this realistic take on videogame characters is really taking off. You've seen Mario, were intrigued by Bowser and got traumatized by Pikachu with nipples. Well now it's time for another well known videogame mascot to get the realistic treatment.

This realistic take on Sonic the Hedgehog was done by Marcus Blättermann, the same artist who made the realistic Bowser. Check out Marcus's site as he goes into the details on how he made this revision of Sonic and the process he went through trying to get Sonic to look as real as possible while trying to stay true to the classic character. Marcus even went ahead and made a realistic take of Sonic in classic 8-bit form.  

I have to wonder now, would Sonic have become as iconic as he has if he looked more like this revision as apposed to the blue fur ball we all know and love now? Either way, I still think the realistic Pikachu one is the best so far. What do you think?

Yeah, it's kind of a given that a "realistic" painting of a hedgehog with gargantuan thighs and wearing white gloves and running shoes isn't really going to look realistic. However, if a real hedgehog were to somehow manage to pull it off, I imagine this is how it would look.

Really like this one. It think its the extremely muscley arms and legs that make it funny.

Also seconding realistic Dynamite Heddy. That game was the shizz.

This is dumb. “Realistic” doesn’t mean “human-like”, but that’s exactly what Blättermann has done here. Hedgehogs don’t have tree-trunk thighs, and they don’t have hands with fingers, either. Instead, they have paws, which have claws.

If he was going for an exaggerated and “artistic” look, then fine. But it’s stupid to call this “realistic”.

How is this realistic? Wouldn't realistic be shooting a hedgehog with blue paintballs then putting red shoes on a him? Actually that kind of sounds like fun.

the fact is that sonic is already somewhat human-like in that stands upright, has actual digits on his hands, etc. i think the word "realistic" is appropriate because the image isn't quite as cartoony as the original, and might be what an anthropomorphized hedgehog would be expected to look like in the real world.

Dude, it's all semen ticks. It IS realistic, in the sense that he actually looks like an anthropomorphic hedgehog, as opposed to a blue, spiky, animal-like thing. It's obvious that "realistic" isn't supposed to be taken 100% literally in any of these cases. After all, it's physically impossible for a normal human being to look like that "realistic" Mario they did.
