Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Square Enix's announcement of yet another Final Fantasy game a few weeks ago has the interwebs abuzz, lauding the publisher's ability to both take their franchises in exciting new directions and milk them for all their worth. Which is a lot. The possibility of Microsoft getting its hands on the piece of the pie isn't doing much to stem the tide of speculation.

Very rarely does change go over well, especially concerning a beloved videogame franchise that has spanned almost two decades. Arguments and criticisms have been tossed all over forums, blogs, and the Internet in general -- some of it positive, some negative, some of it constructive and rational, some not.

So, what do the writers of Destructoid think about Square Enix's multi-platform method? Our opinions are just as varied as everyone else's, so hit the jump to see what DMV, Kokomo, Husgush, and I think.

Brad -Dick McVengeance- Rice

I've grown weary of Square Enix's franchising of Final Fantasy. I'm a firm believer that the FF games should just be the ones with numbers, and that all the other "spin-off games" should just be their own series. What I'm talking about is games like Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, Final Fantasy Adventure, etc. There tend to be one of two problems: the game is bad, and drags down the Final Fantasy name, or the game is actually limited by the Final Fantasy restrictions, and could have been much more.

Releasing stuff like Final Fantasy Tactics as it's own series would've allowed the game to go in a more creative direction than be restricted by the trappings of Final Fantasy. Tactics had a lot that they could've done outside of the typical FF world, and they weren't able to. If it had been its own series, I think Square Enix would've been able to put out a tactics RPG and have a new series that they could work with.

Square Enix really needs to work towards creating new series and not putting everything in their Final Fantasy basket.

Chad Concelmo

Keep in mind that I love Square Enix and the Final Fantasy games are some of my favorite games of all time (even all the recent ones) … but … with that being said …

I want to argue that Final Fantasy games just don't feel like Final Fantasy games anymore. With all this saturation they are dangling close to looking like every other Japanese R.G. out there. The production values are as high as ever, but these advances in technology are replacing the classic moments and classic characters that make Final Fantasy, well, Final Fantasy. Remember the opera scene in Final Fantasy VI? Or when Palom and Porom turned themselves to stone in IV? I will take these moments over any of the highly detailed, pre-rendered cut-scenes of the last decade or so.

Even the characters are starting to blur together and are becoming almost interchangeable. I love you Balthier, but you are no Setzer. Tidus? Not even close to Cloud. And don't even get me started on X-2. When there were years between Final Fantasy games, it seemed the creators put a lot more heart (and personality!) into the final products. Hell, the hype alone would always make a new Final Fantasy game something special. Now it just seems like there is a new one every couple of months and everything is starting to feel so, * sigh*, generic. And that makes me sad.

 Topher -Hushgush- Cantler

With Square's history of putting an emphasis on storyline, it may not be such a terrible thing to have some titles branch out into other projects. Some games have had such fascinating and/or complicated plots that they might deserve another chapter just to explain themselves. The perfect example of this is Final Fantasy VII.

Having spawned a movie, two books, a PS2 game, a cellphone game and an upcoming PSP title, FFVII is the poster child for the Square-Enix dairy farm. Is that so bad, though? If you loved the game as much as I did, you might be interested to hear the rest of tale, wherever it comes from. I loved Advent Children and I thought it was great to see what the crew had been up to since Meteor ruined everyone's day. If it's done right, sequels and expansions can add to a story and enrich it without insulting it.

Dirge of Cerberus, on the other hand, is guilty of insulting it and shows us what a sequel should not be.

It's a fine line, and one that many fans would rather Sqaure didn't walk. Some games have become more than just stories in the hearts and minds of gamers, and it can be dangerous to tread on sacred ground. Some things are better left alone, and maybe it's just an easy way to squeeze a few more gil out of a popular title, but if there might be a little more to a story you love, wouldn't you want to hear it? If it's told by the right people, I sure would, and who tells a better story than Square?

Joseph -Orcist- Leray

I'll admit -- I'm a Final Fantasy fanboy. There. I said it. That even applies to X-2, which I firmly believe has redeemable qualities.

That being said, it's no surprise that I think that Square Enix is going in a positive direction with their multi-platform design. At its core, this new system will make it easy for fans of the series to get their hands on as many iterations as they want, on their console of choice. I remember when I bought a Playstation to play Final Fantasy VII, and for that reason alone. Luckily, it paid off and was an excellent investment.

Fast forward 10 years and, as of now, the only way to play Final Fantasy XIII is by dropping 600 bones on a PS3. Will it be worth it? Who knows -- in the mean time, check out what else Squeenix has to offer.

The obvious objection is that this will dilute the franchise, but I'm optimisitic. Crisis Core, the Lion War, and Revenant Wings all look very promising, and I won't pass judgment on Tactics Advance 2 or Ring of Fates until we know a little more about them. Granted, Dirge of Cerberus, was a dismal failure, but it was a shooter. When SE sticks to RPGs, they turn out wonderfully. Furthermore, Final Fantasy XIII was designed, from the ground up, to have games on different platforms -- it's not like they're making it up as they go along. And with a varied team (including the Kingdom Hearts guys) involved in the project, rest assured that we won't be seeing more of the same.

Well, dear readers, what do you think? Pick us apart, call us fanboys, point out our short comings! Do you object to our opinions? If so, on what grounds? Give us something to work with, and we'll reply next week, all Phoenix Wright style!

I agree with Dick McV, while all, and most of the numbered FF games have been fantastic, the spin-offs have tended to be not that great. Also, as DMV said, those spin-offs are in fact boxed in by the Final Fantasy mantra and world, whereas if they were to be separate entities apart from the Final Fantasy franchise they might have become overall better products.

Don't forget about the OVA of Final Fantasy VII, Last Order. I don' think the complementation of Final Fantasy VII was a good idea. The story was self-contained enough to be a masterpiece, it didn't need further explanation. As far as multi-platform FF games go, who could be unhappy about that, its nothing but great for us gamers, especially those of us who only have 1 system and don't want to buy another one just to play a few great games

i agrees with everyone...except Haley, or Mr. Haley as he likes to be called by, 11/10? you're either trying to steal RevAnt's gimmick with an extreme review, or just plain dumb.

I'd have to agree with Orcist, Im glad there is a good amount of FF games coming out. Do I think its overkill? Hell yes, but at the same time maybe this will show Squeenix what works and what doesnt, and thats what Im really hoping for, so that nothing like Chocobo Tales comes out ever again

So DMV is saying the spin-offs aren't Final Fantasy enough, and Kokomo is saying the spin-offs are too Final Fantasy to be better games.

Sounds like a lose-lose to me.

Okay, this is going to be a lot of @ responses, but here goes:

@ DMV: Final Fantasy Adventure is not a FF game, it's Seiken Densetsu 1. It was only called Final Fantasy Adventure to capitalize on the NES game's license. SK1 was recently remade as Sword of Mana for GBA a few years ago, and is now easily identified as part of the Seiken Densetsu/Mana series.

(And you totally ripped off my Final Fantasy Tactics example!)

@ Chad: I thought it was the other way around, that every other Japanese RPG was starting to look like Final Fantasy.

@ Hushgush: Sometimes a story is better if not every single aspect of it is spelled out for the audience, in my opinion. FFVII didn't need this much support.

@ Orcist: The Lion War is simply a port of Final Fantasy Tactics with a few extras and better cutscenes, so pointing to it as another spin-off is iffy at best. Also, Ring of Fates (and The Crystal Bearers) are sequels to the Crystal Chronicles spin-off and should almost be considered a separate series, if not for the original game. Finally, tell me why all three (maybe four, counting Haerisis) FFXIII games have to be not only Final Fantasy games, but all under the same number. There is no reason why some of these games can't be original IPs or, at the very least, additional numbered installments of FF. (Well, I guess the cell phone XIII can't.)

@ king3vbo: Chocobo Tales is yet another installment in the spin-off Chocobo series of games, which all are quite mediocre. It's just that now they took the premise of Yoshi's Story.

@ deiga: No, DMV was saying that FF spin-offs are too trapped by their license to expand into original and creative IPs.

@ Everyone: This response was way too long, huh?

I think people need to stop cosplaying as Cloud and Sephiroth already.

Sorry, addendum to my response to DMV: Final Fantasy Legend (I-III) for Game Boy is a similar US rebranding of the first three games in the SaGa series, and is not Final Fantasy. Also, I forgot that Seiken Densetsu's full Japanese title was Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden (and strangely, simply Mystic Quest in Europe), and is I guess still a spin-off of FF. However, it successfully evolved into its own series with Seiken Densetsu 2/Secret of Mana, and the GBA's Sword of Mana removed any Final Fantasy references, such as chocobos.

I rather enjoy Chocobo Tales. It's a fun melding of Aesop's Fables, Warioware, Chocobos, and whichever card battle game is least offensive to you. And it doesn't take itself so goddamn seriously.

But yeah, what everyone else has said. I like the idea of FF being available cross-platform, but they need far fewer spinoffs and more original IP. I really don't care for the additional FF7 story, because the original was pretty well developed, if not always spelled out to the player.

Just remake FF7 for next-gen consoles if you want to make boatloads of cash and pretty much make everyone happy in the process.

I would just like to say that my review of FFX-2 was off the record. It was just pillow talk! You and I are totally over Orcist... and you can definitely forget about that thing you wanted to do.

I Don't mind sequels to tactics Advance, FFT remake for PSP, Or Revnant wings (since it looks so sweet)

But after witnessing the debacle that was the (Compilation of FFVII) i dont like the idea of their newest endeavor (The Whoring of FFXIII)

in my Eyes SE reign over the RPG landscape is over, But because nobody has stepped up to claim the throne it's still thiers, theres some good studios out there like Mistwalker and Level 5, but it's going to be near impossible to constructs an RPG franchise that could stand up to the FF legacy

That being said, Squaresoft > Square-Enix

Ehrgeiz.

Would anyone have given this shitty game a second glance if it hadn't had Cloud, Tifa, Vincent, Yuffie, Sephiroth, and Zack as playable fighters?

Yeah, it's not technically a "Final Fantasy" game, and wasn't developed by Square, but it's still an example of them whoring out the franchise, to the detriment of said franchise.

There is an explanation to all their shit they are throwing out now. Two people. Sakaguchi and Nobou, two men who have been with the series as long as anyone can remember and worked on the many games we love. With them gone I'd say Square Enix is fucked. So now they are just milking the franchise and working with what Sakaguchi and Nobou left them, rehashing it into different products. And with an acquired teenybopper fan-base they are going to get very rich before they decide to move on from the FF series.

This is just a theory though, a very explainable theory. However, they will lose the other large fan-base of people who loved the older games and are still waiting for another classic, like myself if this continues. Fuck spin-offs, stop stalling Square "Enix".

You just have spoken the solid truth, my frnd. It gives even a more solid reason why Hino left the company... squaresoft always ruled on almost all their games... Sqeenix is just blowing the games...

After Final Fantasy VI, everything else is just plain trash imo. Well, ok, VII was just OK (overhyped) and Tactics was neat... but other than that I could have lived without the latest iterations.

I had to force myself to finish XII... you should NEVER have to force yourself to complete a game.

So, yes I agree that they have lost their way. Cutting out all the other fluff and focusing on one generation at a time might do them some good. That... and getting rid of the emo bullshit and give us some characters that you actually care about.

"When there were years between Final Fantasy games, it seemed the creators put a lot more heart (and personality!) into the final products."

QFE.

And also they put a lot more heart, Kingdom Hearts in. When Square worked on new IP it was awesome. They shouldn't beat Final Fantasy to death. A few new games every few years. Stop trying to turn EVERYTHING into Final Fantasy. When you have a good series to milk, you're suppose to do just that...MILK it...but slowly. Or else the udder falls off, black and withered.

Squeenix has a slippery slope...they've got an established name and reputation, and even though a few dodgy titles (Crystal Chronicles anyone?) came out they're still doing excellent. They should be careful what they put on the line.

I agree that they need to stop making every single game they put out a Final Fantasy. I wouldn't mind seeing them try original stuff, even if it's not that great... it may become a gem.

Einhander 2 anyone?

I say the more the better, but only as long as they get one thing right... The story. The story of Final Fantasy X was my all time favorite, but the story of FF XII was a ridiculous insult to the series and the fans. I also had to force myself to finish it. As long as they can get the story right, I'll buy their games.
