Weekend Reading: Time management and gaming photo

Work or games? That's the question that's been plaguing me this week since I picked up Super Paper Mario on Tuesday, knowing full well that I have a paper due in a week, several articles for Destructoid and Japanator, and the day to day work of my regular classes. So what did I do? I furiosly wrote 2/3 of my paper in one night, and then have been blowing it off up until yesterday for Super Paper Mario. Classwork and readings? Bah. I can do that a half hour before class starts.

So yeah, I suck at time management. This week, I probed the rest of the writers here to see how they balanced their gaming habits with the rest of their lives. I'd like to hear some stories from the rest of you readers to see if you are able to manage your time any better. Hopefully it'll help me in getting more games beaten, instead of being stuck on Red Steel forever.

What I've come to find is that I have less and less time to spend playing console games. Things like Twilight Princess and Final Fantasy XII will continue to sit by the wayside until the summer months come and I have a chance to game more regularly. Unless I can blaze through a game, there's a pretty good chance that it won't get completed unless I'm forced to -- like in the case of Viewtiful Joe the other week (Thanks, Necros, for getting me off my ass to beat that game).

So, how do the writers and I keep in touch with the gaming world? Well, one of the biggest helps has been the rise of awesome titles on handhelds. For me, playing through stuff like Lunar Knights of Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow while riding on the bus or waiting between classes is sometimes the only gaming I can get in. For a lot of us here, it seems like console games really only happen on the weekend.

Now, here's the fun part: little tales and quotes about how we actually manage gaming with our life. First, let's start with our Editor-in-Chief, Robert Summa:

Counter-Strike, StarCraft, and WarCraft ruled my college days. Those always came first before school work.

This is certainly the attitude I wish I could have. Sometimes gaming really does have to become a priority, otherwise work can get truly overwhelming. Or, the game might just be that awesome. Several of the writers have attested to calling in sick to school or work to blast through a new game on launch day. I have some sort of moral complex against skipping classes for anything other than sickness or sleep. Niero, our Robot-in-Chief, is the worst offender out of us:

I've taken a self-granted 4-day weekends for most Final Fantasy games on the PS1/PS2, skipped school repeatedly when the SNES ones came out (I'd give my kingdom for a Kefka reprise) and probably use my DS more than any other console right now. I also remember being broke in 2003 and taking a week long vacation... and stayed home and finished Diablo 2. Good times, good times.

Getting work done really is an important thing -- otherwise you won't get paid or graduate. So, some of the writers gave their words of wisdom for what to do in a situation where you've got both work and a game to do.First, let's hear from resident retro-whore, Aaron Linde:

Here's how almost every day of my entire senior year of college has progressed: I play lots of games, I write for Destructoid, I sleep. If an assignment is due the following day -- oh, likesay, today -- I wake up buttcrack early and pound it out before class. This might sound like tomfoolery, but it's worked so far; I haven't failed any classes yet, and I've got a 3.8 GPA. If you work well under pressure, I highly recommend it. It's education on the f***ing bleeding edge, like an episode of 24, but-- you know, college.

Meanwhile, here's Fronz's strategy:

Just learn to deal with never sleeping and things start to get easier.

I really can't speak from a workplace perspective about balancing gaming and work, but in terms of school things, here's what I've started to do, and achieved some level of success: when I get an assignment, I just blaze through it as much as I possibly can in one night, and then game for a while. Sometimes the assignment is acutally complete, and I can have a free conscience for a week. Otherwise, I have a lot less work to do, and so I can put it off to the last minute...and end up being just like Aaron Linde.

So, what are your habits for mixing work and play, readers?

I am almost ashamed to say that videogames have, throughout my life, prevented me from achieving the things I should have. I could have scored a first class degree had I not been playing games, heck I probably could have been a professional football (soccer) player if I didn't spend so much time with my SNES. As it stands right now I spend around 4 hours sleeping per night, whatever I need to do for work and the rest playing videogames. As your pie chart accurately represents the rest of my time is spent wanking to internet porn [what did anyone do before hotmovies.com? Have real relationships?]followed by checking out D'toid and the like.

The amount of time I spend playing games is almost embarrassing. I will quite happily spend all night playing a game and suffer feeling crap for work the next day.

I am however still stuck on Red Steel. That may have something to do with it being shit.

Games like Elite Beat Agents and Hotel Dusk have done wonders for me. I can start them up and shut them down whenever I want.

Super Paper Mario is also consuming my precious few important hours. It's pure evil.

It seems like I fuck myself over every single week by using video games to procrastinate doing my school work. I don't think I'll ever learn.

I love the all-nighters playing Gears of War, then feeling shitty all day the next day. As for papers, I usually get them done the night before they're due. So all-nighters all week regardless and catch up on sleep one day over the weekend.

Finish Diablo II? I played that game for years...

6 hours a night of sleep max, school/work for at least 12 hours a day, and the rest is masturbation/drinking/gaming (sometimes all 3 at once)

On a workplace perspective. I make time for my gaming, but "workday" gamings are different from "weekend" gaming in terms of genre.

Workday games consist of action, strategy and hand held titles or anything you think you can just pick up and play.

While Weekend games are usually the heavy stuff, RPG's, adventure games or any game that needs a lot of attention to be able to get into it.

I make a point to make time for gaming at least 1 to 2 hours a day on weekdays and just make my Sunday a whole day affair for games and it seems to be a good balance for me.

I've been struggling with this issue of time management myself. I have a moderate amount of work that I really need to devote time to. However, I just...don't really feel like doing it. So the next logical thing would be to play games (or bass guitar). However, I feel guilty having fun if I haven't done at least some of my work, so I don't play the games I need to. So the question is, what the hell am I doing? Mostly hanging out in my room, accomplishing nothing, occasionally checking Dtoid and other sites.

My view on weekends is similarly screwed up most of the time, in terms of completing work. My classes end Thursday, so Thursday night is spent hanging out. Friday isn't supposed to be free, but it is, so I take that as an extra sleep day. Saturday is the day that you do all that fun stuff that you've been waiting to do, and then Sunday, well, you don't want to waste the end of the weekend doing work now, right? It's a wonder I get anything done.

Then again, I've been in this depression funk lately, so my results may be slightly tainted.

@ Nex: I swear, he was just picking most of them at random.

I'm up there with the best of 'em when it comes to procrastination, for example, as I am typing this I am supposed to be writing a paper for my criminal justice class that is due tomorrow. Between college and work I get almost no gaming time so the promise of a nice weekend all to myself is what gets me through the day. I'm also really bad a leaving games incomplete until I have time to complete them too. I have a shelf-full of incomplete games that give me either sad panda eyes or a punch in the crotch (Final Fantasy is an ornery bastard) every time I look at them.

Its easy. I work in a hotel and on my eight hour shift, as long as i don't have to kick out some drunks, i only ever have 2 and a half hours of work. The rest is spent on my ds. Wi Fi all the way. Then at home, when i'm playing some console action, its "spending time with my son" and then when he's in bed, its "personal time."

Since I've had a kid, my gaming time has been severely hampered. Working third shift actually helps a bit, because I have a few hours in the morning to myself before everyone wakes up, I'll sneak in some games then. My DS is usually always with me, so I'll play that when I have a moment. I've become extremely hooked on quick, pick up and play titles and casual games. The days of me playing stuff like WoW are pretty much behind me until the kiddo is older.

This brings back horrible college memories of when I would burn the candle at both ends just to squeeze in some game time.

I would stay out till midnight or so every night, I'd then game for 3 hours before going to bed, start my homework, wake up at 7am for school, and finish my homework before finally going to class. I still don't understand how I ever made it through; though my grades started to seriously falter toward the end of my college career.

Now, as a working man, I find my self too exhausted to play many of the games I would have enjoyed several years ago. I just don't have the energy to sit down and play through a 50-75 hour, ultra-non-linear, super-customizable game. Give me a good FPS, or Mario any day of the week. Zelda has to wait till weekends however.

Also, LMAO @ DMV's pie chart and its complete absence of "doing real work". :)

This was hilarious and I bet more accurate than most people suspect....

I think I found my true calling.....a Destructoid blogger....

Endless hours of gaming research, masturbation and blatant zombie slaying..../droool

As a 29 year old career blog researcher at a blog analysis firm ....
Work 7am-6pm (at least I am paid to research all things in the blogopshere realm)
Gym 6pm-7pm
Game 7pm-12pm
Girlfriend 12pm-1am
Sleep 1am - 6am

Weekends are split time gaming and girlfriend....my favorite is waking at 6am to game will 2pm on Saturday or Sunday....nomrally World of Warcraft or recently Guitar Hero 2.

Time management? I don't have a problem with that. Sure, I had a project due for today that I haven't actually started, but as I found out(a couple of hours after the deadline), it got extended by two weeks. As long as you can get the universe to bend to your whims, you can game as much as you want.
