This week's Weekend Reading is an interview with the ultra-hardcore gamer Esca. You may know him from Pure Pwnage, and our resident Ninjtendo considers him a rival, or a possible teacher, or whatever. He's just totally gay for Esca, that much I know. In this interview, you'll find action, drama, excitement, and fitness tips. So be prepared to be shocked and amazed, and be sure to check out Esca's Myspace page and website:

DMV: So, what got you into gaming?

Esca: OMG are you serious? I knew this one was coming how would I have guessed? See, it all happened when I climbed on top of my fridge one day and I fell on my head. No joke. I was a little dizzy and my mom had to do laundry that day. We went to the laundry mat and I met this lovely arcade machine named Mario Bros. Since then, it was love at first sight. My head was hurting and pounding but that damn game made it go away.

DMV: Certainly more of a story than finding a dusty Atari 2600 in the garage.

Esca: Well see I was very poor growing up, and I could not have such things. I remember going day in and day out to that laundry mat to find change people have left in the machines or dropped to play. I would walk like six blocks there and such. This was in a small town called Keleen, Texas.

DMV: Did you dominate the high score?

Esca: You know I never really kept track. I just loved playing it so much and when they got the Duck Hunt version in there later OMG. By then I was cutting some lawns and such.

DMV: Have you ever gone back to see if the machine is still around in the laundromat?

Esca: No someday I do want to visit there, though. My family lost everything in Texas and we were forced to move to Wisconsin with nothing more than what we had on our backs

DMV: When you moved there, was it a while before you were able to get back into gaming, or were there local arcades for you?

Esca: When I first moves to Milwaukee, WI, gaming was not the main thing, although I really wanted to, I was worried more about my parents and the family. I remember seeing the Nintendo commercials on TV and my friends talking about it. I wanted on so BAD! My friend in the neighbor hood got one so I would play there and the teacher at school got one for the class and if you were good and had good test scores you would get to play for an hour. Let's just say I studied hard and saved money for myself. I never asked my parents because I know the situation they were in and I even used to hear my mom cry because she could not get stuff for us. But one day, man, that one day was it. When I got my NES, it was heaven. I remember my parents got a break; I don't remember how they got all this money but they did some or some company owed it to them. I only had like 30 bucks saved up or so from like cutting lawns for the old lady in the neighborhood and like helping with odd jobs. I got really sick man and I had to go to the hospital. I was there for 3 days, then I came home and BAM the NES waiting for me. I still remember I pulled that thing out of the box and the smell. I will never forget that smell man. You know that Nintendo smell?

DMV: Were you flipping out like the N64 kid?

Esca: Well not like that. I had just gotten out of the hospital, but maybe I should have. But seriously, I will not forget that damn smell. I just got the Wii and I did the same thing I sat there and smelled it to see if I could get the same feeling. Nope, no smell. I didn't have my own TV, I remember. A week or so later I saw that a neighbor had thrown a TV out and I went and picked it up. I don't know what was wrong with it but it worked, and then I had NES in my little room. Everything from there on is a blur. I am glad I grew up in these times so I could see everything evolve like it is now.

DMV: Yeah, I'm a bit younger than you. I was in the middle of SNES when I got into gaming.

Esca: yeah by far I think the Snes was the best system. Well the Wii is kicking some ass now. But dont talk to me about the 64...eeewww

DMV: You disliked it more than the GC?

Esca: YES! That's when I turned to the dark side of Sony...but yet again Sony and Nintendo were partners. Nintendo betrayed Sony and they got there asses handed to them, so I don't feel too bad.

DMV: Well, it looks like Sony is going to be suffering this generation, don't you think?

Esca: UM yeah but they know that They will come back around like in a year in a half or so. Wouldn't put it past them, too. I think they rushed it .Sony is kind of sucking all company around.

DMV: So, our resident Ninjtendo was wondering a couple things about you. How many girls send you naked pictures?

Esca: Nice question, haha. I have to admit I DO GET ALOT OF THEM, and they are real. I don't know what it is I'm just a regular geek that likes the games. You should see the emails I get sometimes

DMV: I think its because you have a bit of bishonen mystique.

Esca: I guess...but hey if I can do it, any gamer out there can too. I am myself and that is all you need you know. I am not shy about my passions and stuff, I put it out there 100%. I get the occasional “you're a fag,” etc. etc. but the positive is so much more. I guess the sexy NES outfit just turns the girls on and make the guys angry for some reason.

DMV: Did you make that yourself?

Esca: OH hell yeah. Everything you see on my site I modded or did myself

DMV: Does that SNES backpack still work?

Esca: No, sadly. That's the reason I did that with it. It went out on me after so many years. Nintendo makes some tough ass products, let me tell you. It was hard to bust that bad boy open; I have scars.

DMV: How'd you acquire your fan base?

Esca: You know people say I have fans but I really do not know. I just started my site like 3 years ago. I just wanted to have like a diary a daily life type thing for me out there. I just posted about things that mattered to me and most of that stuff was about games and anime, then it just started taking off. Another reason it is is because of Pure Pwnage

Esca: I think that did it for me too the hair. If I cut it all off one day I will go into the shadows once again.

DMV: No! Then Nex won't have someone to compare fabulous hair with! So do you go out in cosplay often?

Esca: I have my days. There are the special event days, the weekends when I feel like it, and when the ladies ask for it behind closed door or outside what ever they like. Oh, and of course ACEN, the only anime convention I go to every year.

DMV: Are you a big anime fan? I noticed the Initial D sticker and all

Esca: Hahahaha, well what do you think? Yes, I am a big anime freak .

DMV: What are some of your recent favorites?

Esca: Blood Trinity, Samurai Champloo, and Escaflowne. Oh, and Appleseed.

DMV: Any love for Ouran High School Host Club?

Esca: Yes! I just started but I recently had a crash in my comp and lost over 300gs of downloaded anime.

DMV: aah! Go redownload it! So, what do you do to fund your gaming obsession?

Esca: Everything, but I mainly sell crack pills. No, I am a IT/Graphics manager. No kids to feed...well my niece, I love her to death I just got her a DS light for Christmas. All the extra money I have besides food bills and such goes to gaming.

DMV: Any games to go with it?

Esca: Yeah, just New Super Mario Bros. Hell what uncle do you know that will get you a DS Lite, and you're only 7.

DMV: Damn, that's pretty awesome

Esca: Yeah, shes a little gamer herself. Reminds me of me. I want to give her everything I did not have as a young gamer

DMV: Are you going to train her into being a hardcore gamer like yourself?

Esca: I want her to grow up and be a hot gamer babe and date guys like me. Sometimes I feel like she will surpass me someday, and I will me the old sensei that she will face and move on. Then someone comes and challenges me and kills me and she will avenge me.

DMV: Can you train the Ninjtendo as well? He seeks your tutelage. He can be her great rival!

Esca: Yes, I can train those who seek true gaming.

DMV: Will it be a difficult journey for him?

Esca: Depends how much training he has had so far. I have not met him as of yet and haven't heard legendary tales of him. So I say maybe.

DMV: Haha, he is truly in awe of your skills

Esca: anyone can aquire these skills if they stay committed and truly have a lust and passion to pwn.

DMV: How do you manage to stay in such great shape despite being a gamer? That's probably our greatest challenge as a people.

Esca: Oh, that really started a year ago. Where to start... if you have time later go and visit my blog called Esca vs Esca, I was a skinnier scronny little gamer. Anyways, I decided to treat working out like a game, believe it or not, like a Final Fantasy thing or MMO: grind and get exp. So I started it every day, scheduled work and then gym right after, then the games, Monday through Friday, since all I do is work during the day. All it take is an hour and a half to work out then my day is officially done at 7, with plenty of time to put in 5 hours of gaming or what not. Then it just happened; it became a regular grind, although I have missed a week in a half so far thanks to the Wii.

DMV: So, do you have anything to say to all the dtoid readers out there?

Esca: I have lots of things to say...please visit my site! Seriously though, I just want to let everyone know that I am just and regular gamer like the rest, nothing special I just might have more of a passion and play more that I should or anyone should and I'm not afraid to show my love for such things, no matter what anyone says. This is my love and will always be.

DMV: Well, perhaps we'll be at PAX sometime?

Esca: shoot me an invite and I will be there for sure. That is one thing that I really want to get into is go to more events in the industry. You know, if I could just work doing cosplay and such for games, I would be in heaven.

DMV: Alright, well thanks for taking time out of your work day to come talk to us.

Esca: Nice talking to you guys!

You know, I find it funny how so many of these people accuse Esca of not having a life. Being a troll isn't having a life, in case you were unaware. Why do people have to flaunt their superiority complexes across the interwebs and attack people? It's just sad. I don't think most trolls have the slightest clue as to how idiotic they make themselves seem. Do you know how stupid it would be if every third person that thought you were a lamer-gamer asked you to back your skills up? Especially if you had a considerably large fanbase? I'd say "Screw you too, why would I waste time playing a game with someone who has already decided to hate me before they really know anything about me? Go away, and learn that there are better things to do on the internet than waste people's time by flaming them." And don't feed me that "It's the Internet, you should expect this!" tripe. That's a cop out. The internet is NOT an excuse to be an asshole, nor is any kind of anonymity. Have some self respect, damn you, and try to be a decent person. You waste too much precious time contributing to the problems of mankind with such idiocy.
Stay off of the internet for a few days, and re-evaluate your philosophy on life. It'd do you some good.

Hey Xaon - I never once mentioned anything about Esca as a gamer. I think Esca is lame douchebag because he's a self proclaimed "poet, artist, pro-gamer with a sense of style". Hmmm, Esca is an artist? Oh, you mean those triangle things that he's so concerned about people "stealing" off his website? And I've already linked to "Esca... The Great Poet"... a 28 year old man with the grammar of a 7 year old grade school dropout. And then there's Mr. Style himself..... I won’t even get into that one. I'd also like to point out that the people who seem to be extending this oooh soooo long post are a slew of newbs, like myself, who, gosh darnit! LOOOVE ESCA because he's such a HUGE MAN! HAHAHA! Come on, if you don't want me to keep trashing you goddamn idiots, stop giving me so much fodder. Let's just agree to this: In this world (and on the internet especially), you can find people the LOVE and HATE anything. But just because you happen to find millions of people that LOVE you, doesn't mean you're super great. All it sometimes means is that the majority of the world is a bunch of goddamn idiots. That, my friend, is a fact. Take a look at our Dear Old USA: If there was every living proof that there's MORE idiots than there are non-idiots (cough –presidency- cough), there you have it. In conclusion: Just you think Esca is super great, doesn't mean you're not a retard. PS: Happy Holidays and Goodwill to all!

you guys are still here, wow
determined to let everyone know you hate Esca...what idiots. And Splotki, you little idiot. If you had read ANYTHING about Esca, you'd know that English isn't his first language. Again, so quick to judge people by their covers...and um, you notice you and Ravioli are the only ones still bashing him. Read his new blog, although...you'll probably bash that too.

What idiots
And the Pure Pwnage thing goes SOOO much deeper than what you guys read! Again, if you would take the time to actually talk with someone, you'd learn a lot.

And you guys can send as much hatemail to me as you want. Tell me I suck when I know I'm great. Call me a noob when I know I pwn. Tell me that I'm "an Esca slut/lover/ect. when I know I'm just sticking up for a friend. Say whatever. Hell, I'll even direct you to my myspace...or are you guys too freakin hideous to drop a note there?

I guess everyone pretty much said it, but I'll add my opinion too. Not that it will matter too much from the sounds of everything.

I do NOT know Esca like some of you people do. In fact, I had no clue what Pure Pwnage was or any of that. I asked to be added to Esca's friend page only because I found some of his thoughts on things interesting and his ideas also interesting. Not only that he likes anime. :) I'm not trying to "ride his balls" or something just because he's affiliated with someone or anything like that. Neither am I interested in sending him a billion love letters or joining the harem. lol. And before someone jumps on this I have a boyfriend who I am happy with so just because I'm a gaming chick doesn't mean I have no life. I just enjoy hearing his opinions on gaming, game systems and things of that sort. I guess you could bash him because of looks if that's your major thing or how he is wrong on this or that, but instead of bashing fellow gamers shouldn't we encourage them and also try to help others get their names out there? Gaming has taken such a bad rap for things now, you'd think we'd be supportive of other gamers, not bashing them because they don't do this or that or look like this or that. Take the time to get to know someone. They're not always what you think. Like I said, I don't know him greatly or pretend to know him, but from the few times I've talked to him and things I've read, he seems pretty cool. Maybe there are other gamers out there that you feel should have gotten recognition...fine everyone is entitled to their opinion. And now I am done with mine. Thanx for listening. I'm not trying to bash anyone. I just wanted to write this is all. Happy holidays.

Splotki: Yeah, you asked him to back up his skills. In effect, you were inferring that his reputation as a pro gamer was baseless. So you kinda just defeated your own argument before you even made it. I apologize, I'll try to use smaller words this time so you don't mistake me: YES, you DID mention things about Esca as a gamer. I'd say to read your own damned posts, but it looks like I have to spoon feed you your own shit:

"Also, don't act like your good at games, until you can prove it. Name ONE game, and I'll play you, and likely beat you at it, whether it be RTS or FPS. Don't even say Second Life or WoW, because those are not compeditive games. Back YOURSELF up for gaming skills."

I also find it sad that you come down on Esca's grammar , spelling and punctuation, but you've made errors, yourself. Before you bitch about someone else's literacy, make sure your own is fucking perfect first. Otherwise, stop acting like a damned hypocrite. I know it's hard. Deal.

And you know what else? You aren't making yourself look any smarter, or decent, or like you have any redeeming qualities at all by posting more shit-talk. Look, I have to agree that I don't like everything about Esca, like I'm not a fan of his poetry, and a couple of other things I can't think of right now. I like his outlook on life more than anything else, though, so I have to say he gets a few more points than you do, as things stand. At least he realizes it's pointless to care about other people say about him too much.

Besides, don't you have better things to do with your time, my time, and anyone else's time you wasted by dissing someone?

What have you achieved, except make everyone painfully aware that you're fond of acting like an ass?

Go win a Darwin Award.

It'd be doing something more productive with your life than flaming people you don't know.

I mean, honestly, is it that fucking hard for you to be polite?

If you disagree, just say you disagree. You can voice your opinion without flaming, I promise. You just have to try a little harder.

With enough practise, it will come naturally.

It may take you years, decades, or just a few days, but I promise, it'll make life just a little bit easier to live for you, and for anyone within the metaphorical "sound of your voice".

See, what I posted earlier was much better than saying something like "Compeditive? Aww, it's adorable when he talks like that."

It'd make me seem like an ass, wouldn't it?

You see, making digs at people's spelling ability and judging them using that as a major factor, not to mention acting like a complete smartass, is pretty dumb.

Splotki, this is an example of what NOT to do when trying to make a point without making a fool of yourself.

I'm just trying to help you here, because it seems you have difficulty doing otherwise.

The Golden Rule seriously is a good model for human behavioral relations, except where (sado)masochists of any kind are concerned. Heh.

Now if only the greater portion of mankind thought the same thing, we'd all be in a much better place.

Don't you think?

haha wooo the esca defenders to the rescue! attack! you guys should form up to make one big homo....thatd be awesome! :o

ok ok so like i feel by me being a asshole to guys like this is doing gaming a favor cus if this guy gets interviews cus he dresses like this and plays games.....this isnt how i want gaming to be percieved...its just embarrasing.

and dont say pwn thats just lame...or play counterstrike when you yell it at other 12 year olds.

and i think the whole grammar attacks are last resorts but when someone comes off as snobby or bragging about there job and then cant spell very simple words like detective (see his secondlife profile) then it kinda makes you wonder, and many mistakes in your own post all these things make fun of the person themselves without trying so no need to point it out.

and im a asshole its fun and no i dont have anything better to do as do you cause you are responding to these comments also :D

dude and no human behavioral relations matter on the internet...... you should know this.

did your dumbass not read anything?

ENGLISH IS NOT HIS FIRST LANGUAGE, NOR WAS IT HIS SECOND

And how exactly do you want gaming to be percieved? A bunch of fat sweaty guys all huddled together playing WoW? I say you're just trying to keep the stupid "fat guy, no life" gamer stereotype going strong because IT PROBABLY APPLIES TO YOUR SORRY ASS! You can't be mad or angry at someone because they want to put a little something extra onto how they game. This is what he does, and he got interviewed for it because DICK MCVENGEANCE THOUGHT HE WAS INTERESTING!! And he is, don't be mad because YOU'RE NOT!!

shut the hell up and get a life

I'm not here on Esca's behalf. I'm here because I find the fact that you get off on pissing people off disturbing, and I'm trying to show you that there's more to life than that.

I'm actually here out of concern for your welfare, as ludicrous as that sounds. I'm trying to help you, out of my concern for my fellow man. I know you must be thinking "Wow, this guy is retarded. He's trying to help someone he doesn't even know." It doesn't really matter to me that I don't know you. If I somehow make you better able to interact with people over the internet, and maybe even in the fabled "RL", (note sarcasm) then I will have done my good deed for the day(s), and that makes me feel like a more worthwhile human being, like I accomplished something of genuine value.

And don't act as though I'm here for the same reasons as you. I'm not going out of my way to piss you off. Quite the opposite. It would a be a hell of a lot easier to just act like you, and say idiotic things like "UR GHEY" and crap like that, but as I said before, I'm just trying to show you that there are better ways to go through life, and better ways to act.

Also, you say no human behavioural relations matter on the internet? Well, I want to change that.

Can you fault me for wanting to clean up the internet by starting a movement/revolution perpetuating throughout the interwebs, a movement of behavioural reform?

Is it wrong of me for wanting people to respect their fellow man, even though they don't know them?

The Internet should have never been an excuse for bad behavior.

If I want to effect a change, then I have to start somewhere.
Dtoid seemed just as good a place as any.

It was convenient to my purposes, anyways.

I am not Esca. Not that I can really offer you much in the way of proof, but I shouldn't really have to, and it shouldn't really matter.

My words should ring true to you, independent of how you come by them, if there is any merit to them at all.

What I'm trying to tell you is that you have better things to do. I know you're just doing your best to mock both Esca and me, but I don't care. That's not important. What is important, is that I'm doing my best here to wake you up.

I know I shouldn't condescend to you, but you're not making it any easier. I'm honestly sorry if I've upset you in any way.

And yes, I know you think that I'm an idiot for wanting the internet to be known for good things like basic human decency and other worthwhile things like that, but if I can improve things in any way, then I will have done some good. I know I can't "fix" the Internet by myself, so I am content to do whatever good I can. If I improve things in any way, and make it where people are not frowned upon for being themselves, then it was worth my time, and I have done enough good for me to be at peace with my conscience.

And I know you were mocking me when you said it, but there is never a complete lack of hope. You can change if you want to, if you have any willpower, and if you had no willpower at all, you'd be dead, because you would have lost the will to live.

You CAN treat people with decency and respect, even if you don't feel that you should. It's actually worth you time, as you might meet someone you think is worth talking to, and not piss them off in the first five minutes of talking with them. I mean, you have done nothing to really earn my respect so far, but I haven't made fun of you yet.

More than anything, it's because I respect myself. I know I'm a better person than that, and that you can be too, if you just let yourself. It's not hard.

At least I don't feel like I'm wasting time. Even if you reject everything that I say, at least I will have tried to show you that you are better off having a modicum of human decency.

I'm not trying to judge you, and I'm not trying to make you feel bad. I honestly have your future well-being in mind when I continue this. Anyways, I should go wrap presents, it's going to be a busy day tomorrow.

Merry Christmas.

P.S. Do you think I'm some rabid Esca fangirl? Because I'm a guy. Nor am I rabid, or obsessed with Esca. Just thought I ought to clear things up.

I don't search for forum arguments. I just try to resolve the ones I find. I don't think that I'll get people to adopt better behaviour across the internet as a whole,

And I'll take the Dr. Phil comment as a compliment. lawl.

But I think the whole cosplaying thing Esca does IS one of the ways that he chooses to "be himself".

I actually thought his outfits looked cool.

Anyways, I guess that this has been resolved as much as it's going to be.
