Wee Wii contest nets mass firing photo

After the death of a mother recently because of an idiotic morning DJ contest called "Hold Your Wee for a Wii," the radio station that employed these jackasses has decided to can 10 employees of KDND. Three jockeys and two morning hosts were among those who took the axe:

Ten employees of radio station KDND, who ran the "Hold Your Wee For a Wii" contest that resulted in the water-intoxication death of mom Jennifer Strange (right), were fired today as a result of the incident. The show on which the contest was broadcast, called "Morning Rave," has been cancelled.

The firings apparently included the three disc jockeys and two "morning personality" hosts who participated in the program.

The beginning of the end of their life is now underway. I'm sure a full suite of lawsuits will finish the job.

They should be fired for calling their show Morning Rave, let alone having a contest based off the first Wii joke that surfaced and disappeared in a days time.

Ooh, tricksy issue here. On the one hand, the woman is responsible for her own health -- how was anyone supposed to know that her brain was going to swell and kill her? All she had to do was take a piss.

Is it really the DJs responsibility to inform her of the danger of water-intoxication? How much information did they dispense to participants? Were any waivers signed?

I think there are a few issues that should come to light (documents signed, warnings made, etc...) before anybody is held accountable for someone else's failure to recognize the risks their taking.

As far as hazing goes -- alcohol poisoning is pretty well known, and frat pledges need to realize that before they drink. How can someone "force" you do drink, unless they physically hold you down and pour beer into your mouth? Social pressures "forcing" kids to drink isn't a viable accusation, at least for me.

The thing I don't get is how did the radio show know or she went to the toilet or not. There must have been someone monitoring her or did they believe her on her word?

Anyway I believe the show should have informed her about the risks.

Cruds - They most likely held the contest in their recording studio. I know thats how radio contests are held were I'm from.

@ Cruds: The contestants were in-studio if I'm not mistaken.

@ Orcist: Actually voiding your bladder has nothing to do with water intoxication. It's caused by too much water and not enough electrolytes. If they had added a little salt to the water (like they do with sports drinks), this probably could have been avoided.

Cruds at 01/17/2007 14:05
You're both right it was a studio event, I also didn't know they had to drink water every 15 minutes in order to win. I think the show is at least partly responsible for her dead.

It's troubling that ten people lost their jobs just so the station can attempt to wash its hands of the incident. Certainly, anyone involved with conceptualizing and planning the contest should have been axed, but I have a feeling at least four or so of those fired didn't deserve to be.

Yes, waivers of liability were probably signed. The exact language might be even be called into question. But at the end of the day, a jury is not going to consider that sufficient to cover the death of a mother of three.

Here's hoping the legal system performs a more intended function than compensating the plaintiff in frivolous lawsuits. The soon-to-be co-defendents would be wise to settle out of court.

Actually, that's rather shitty.

I don't see how the DJs are responsible.

Basically, the radio station (likely Clear Channel) simply does not want to pay damages and they are taking the easy way out by firing a bunch of underlings.

I blame the woman, straight up. If as a fully grown adult you are incapable of assessing risk, you probably are doing the gene pool a favor by checking out early.

I nominate this lady for a Darwin.

And by the way, this whole "mother of three gives her life to make her children happy" is a steaming load.

Would she consider entering a contest to win her children books? Food? A scholarship to the university of their choice?

A Wii is a luxury. It's not a necessity. This woman is no hero. She's just brick-ass dumb.

Well, I for one didn't know you could die from drinking water. Alcohol and water are... a little different, y'know?

I wonder how people who engage in pie-eating contests feel? At least someone has to have died from over-eating.

Lezbro, so when you die in a car crash, it's your fault because you cannot assess the risk of getting in a car crash. If an airplane falls on you its your fault because you cant assess the risk of standing under an airplane.

I nominate you for the Hitler award, douchebag.

Some people can drink that much water.

I regularly drink a half gallon or more of water a day. I'm not saying she did anything wrong, but the amount wasn't a lethal amount of water to everyone. It's certainly no limit I'd be willing to attempt.

I think it's hilarious that the station's talking about water poisoning and potential death.

Thanks for the link JMFC.

The lady should've puked up this water immediately afterward.

Losing a morning show is no big loss to anyone in the world. And they should be held responsible for this. They're the ones that choose the contests. Very little on air content is preproduced by anyone else at these smaller stations. Talent is usually the one that preps this stuff, and should be held accountable along with anyone in marketing and management that approved this contest. Clear Channel corporately should be held accountable, because the station approved this contest. I'd bet good money that there's no clause on the station release form for accidental poisoning or death as a result of the contest. In any endurance related challenge undertaken by anyone, there needs to be a cutoff point, or an advisor on hand to tell people when to stop. Unsupervised crap like this is what's going to cost CChannel a chunk of change in this case.

Either way, Darwin's got a prize waiting for her.

>> Lezbro, so when you die in a car crash, it's your fault because you cannot assess the risk of getting in a car crash.

The answer is yes. It is your fault.

By the way, driving a car is one of the riskiest activities one can engage in. There are on average 42,000 deaths per year. And some 7,000,000 accidents. Who else should be to blame for getting into a car and getting killed? You turned on the ignition.

Most people ignore this because...

They really like driving in their car.

>> If an airplane falls on you its your fault because you cant assess the risk of standing under an airplane.

No. That's completely different. You're using a little bait-and-switch. One does not elect to stand under a falling plane. I am only holding this woman (and anyone really) accountable for actions they willingly participate in knowing there is a risk of injury or death.

This woman has access to the same Internet I do. I bet she knew who Brad Pitt was sleeping with. I bet she knew what was on television each night of the week.

Any time you are asked to sign a waiver which says in effect "I agree that I might die participating in this activity," that should be clue number one. I'm not happy the woman is dead. It's a tragedy. Mostly for her kids. But the blame is squarely on her.

Any person that is dumb enough to sign a waiver and relies on a DJ to give them safety information is brick-ass dumb.
