We wonder if Punch-Out!!'s Piston Hondo is related to Piston Honda photo

A new contender found in the upcoming Punch-Out!! for the Wii has been revealed, and his name is Piston Hondo.

We have to wonder -- is Piston Hondo related in any way to Piston Honda, well-known Japanese boxer of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! fame? Well, both are from Tokyo, Japan. Both weigh 174 pounds, and while we don't know the height of Piston Honda, we can assume he was in the 6'2" range.

Despite the fact that Nintendo says Hondo was last seen in Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream (a.k.a. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! with 100% less rape convictions), we're not buying it. Evidence that Piston Hondo and Piston Honda are not the same is in the age. There's no way that Piston Honda could be 28 today, the purported age of Piston Hondo. In the original title, he was 28... and that was some 22 years ago. Using mathematics, that would make Piston Hondo/Honda 50-years-old.

And that right there is why we're not "pissed off" that Nintendo changed Piston Honda's name... they're clearly different characters. Duh.

Haha if this is Nintendo's way of "adding a new character" I have lost faith.

Funny write up though :-D

Maybe you'll get to fight them both, like with Nick and then Rick (or was it the other way around?) Bruiser.

* A short dick moves rename the character because you are afraid of name Honda. The same motive that Nitendo don´t release Mother 3. Afraid of cool references to popular culture.

Meh. He's just an asian version of Piston Hurricane anyway.

He's not related to Piston Honda, he's related to John Wayne.

The irony is that the Japanese auto maker has nothing to lose by having him called Piston Honda. It can only help with brand awareness.

Pity. I doubt Honda would even care either way like they did back in the 80s.

It's not every day that you see a Japanese man with such fine sideburns. Well played, Piston Hondo.

Why the hell would they be related?

They have DIFFERENT LAST NAMES.

Some people...

I believe that in Asian culture, the first name is actually the family ("last") name. So they would both be of the Piston family. That is why Yao Ming has YAO on his jersey and not Ming. Last names go on sports jerseys.

Some people.

@Conrad Zimmerman

The only way to tell is if he can be KO'd in under 11 seconds. Then we'll know it runs in the family.

Before anyone argues that Honda hasn't gone after Capcom over E. Honda, this is probably a bit different. Piston = engine = car = Honda = lawsuit? That's what I think the thinking is.
