We walk through a secret door, discover Coraline coming to consoles in 2009 photo

D3Publisher has announced that it will be bringing the videogame adaptation of Coraline to the Wii, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation 2.

Based on a Neil Gaiman novel of the same name, Coraline finds a little girl stumbling upon the Other World, a strange, alternate version of her life. The animated film is being directed by Harry Selick, best known for his directorial work on Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. Characters will be voiced by Dakota Fanning, Terri Hatcher, and Keith David, among others; no word on whether or not their voices will appear in the D3 titles.

The Wii and PS2 versions of the title are being developed by Papaya Studios, who also developed Disney Princess Enchanted Journey for those consoles, as well. (They also did work on Electronic Art's Medal of Honor Airbourne.) The developer of the Game Boy Advanced version of Britney's Dance Beat (one of my favorite GBA games!), Art Co. Ltd. is behind the DS title.

Coraline is set to ship in January of 2009; the film of the same name should hit theaters in February.

D3PUBLISHER TO BRING

FOCUS FEATURES AND LAIKA’S CORALINE

TO Wii™, NINTENDO DS™, AND THE PLAYSTATION®2 SYSTEM IN JANUARY 2009

LOS ANGELES – October 21, 2008 – Based on the exciting new movie Coraline – the first-ever stop-motion animated feature to be made in 3-D – from Focus Features and LAIKA,  the Coraline videogame is coming from D3Publisher (D3P).  The game will let players take on the role of the adventurous heroine Coraline and interact with the wondrous characters from the movie while navigating the scheming Other Mother’s web of deceit in a fantastical adventure through two distinct and interactive worlds.  Coraline is slated to ship to North American retail stores for the Wii™ system, Nintendo DS™ and the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system in January 2009 to coincide with Focus’ nationwide release of the movie on February 6, 2009.

“The Coraline movie is absolutely mesmerizing and we feel that the visual style and tone of the game will bring the amazing stop-motion animated film and thrilling storyline to life for players,” said Bill Anker, vice president of business development, D3P.  “We’re confident that Coraline will offer a truly immersive and interactive gameplay experience that gamers as well as fans of the movie and best-selling book will enjoy.”

The only videogame based on the upcoming movie, Coraline will allow players to explore and interact with such immersive 3-D environments from the movie as the Pink Palace, its nooks and crannies and apartments, and the unpredictable Other World.  Players will engage in unique mini-games and adventures with Coraline’s friends Wybie and Cat as they collect items that will unlock the mysteries of the Other World.

Coraline is under development for Wii and the PlayStation 2 system by Papaya Studios and by Art Co. Ltd., for Nintendo DS.  Coraline is currently rated “RP” (Rating Pending) by the ESRB.

A movie getting a game adaptation? How incredible! This doesn't look like something Destructoid would write about, or did I miss something?

Son of a....how is my love of Neil Gaiman going to stack up against my hatred of videogame movie adaptations.

@Nefilim
I think the reason destructoid mentioned it is because it isn't just "a movie." We're talking a Neil Gaiman adaptation into the largest stop-motion production of all-time, headed by Henry Selick (one of best stop-motion directors of all-time). So really, any loose connection to a game is worth reminding people to mark their calendars!

The movie will be amazing.

The game on the other hand...

Papaya's credits include heavy hitters such as Whirl Tour, Larry Boy and the Bad Apple, and Disney Princess Enchanted Journey.

WoooOooOoOooo

Please..this is Neil Gaiman we´re talking about. my favorite author of this century.

Please don't soil his reputation with a crappy videogame based on a good movie based on his work.

@ Nefilim

Neil Gaiman is the reason Dtoid is writing, not the movie adaptation. The Sandman is one of the greatest literary works of the modern time period. And I was incredibly suprised and pleased with how well Hollywood treated Stardust last year. Agreed, the game will probably go down the same path as other adaptations. But Christ! It's NEIL GAIMAN!!!

This movie was basically already made.

It's called Mirrormask and you should all see it. It's like a modern day version of Labyrinth only there's significantly less Bowie crotch in it.

Yeah, you're right. It's not worth seeing then.

God, how I love Neil Gaiman. That book was a little to disturbing for a children's novel, though...

Anyways. I'm wondering if the movies is crappy, does that mean the game will be as well? I'm not usually one for movie games...

@DinnertimeNinja -- I have to disagree with you. Coraline the book was a lot different than MirrorMask. For one thing, as much as I love all things Gaimen, MirrorMask lack the tightness that his work always has. Coraline was lovely (if wonderfully disturbing) story. I can't wait to see it. Have you seen the website? http://www.filminfocus.com/focusfeatures/film/coraline/
