Gentleman Dinosaur LIVES!

Created by AgentMOO for his multiplayer work-in-progress, AMMO (there'll be a session on Friday night, for all those who would like to attend), we finally have our first -- but hopefully not final -- version of Jim and Aaron's Gentleman Dinosaur.

Tonight at 8 pm PST, we again return to that most comforting of Podtoid structures: the random news episode. We'll be talking about game review vocabulary, first-person parkour and, if we're not careful, probably more stuff about GTA IV

But what does this mean for you?

Well, there's still time to submit an entry in the MGS Podtoid contest, write a sonnet (this week's sonnet theme: the Gentleman Dinosaur), and, of course, ask a question of the cast that may or may not net you twenty-five dollar dollar dollar bills.

What are your opinions of game reviews that receive perfect scores? Is it better to give a game a perfect review when no one else agrees, or wait for that perfect game that everyone will enjoy? Do you think it's possible that there will one day be a game that everyone agrees on?

Hopefully that's somewhat on topic, also your Metal Gear Contest, totally win. That was waaaaaay too much fun.

I am now back at home and in between searching for work and writing a better resume, I took it upon myself to play No More Heroes on the Wii. I beat the game and enjoyed the WTF 4th wall shattering (non) ending that was presented to me. I really want to know exactly what Suda51 is on.

Anyways, I suppose I will put forth a relevant question to a random news show. Jim put up the post about the SecuROM nonsense with Spore and Mass Effect. I suppose I will ask if you guys see this getting pulled out of the final release or will they react at all to the negative feedback this has generated?

I can understand wanting to make sure your product is not being pirated, but this is quite excessive. Mass Effect is a single player RPG, why should I have to be connected to the internet for that? I know through personal experience that parts of the midwest are suffering some pretty bad routing issues from time to time due to certain networks having hardware issues, and having single player games that were not reliant upon my internet connection where pretty nice to have at those times.

As for the MGS contest, I'd enter myself, but I can't find my mic. Oh well, such is life.

Question: How well do you think Earthbound will do as far as sales go? People over at IGN feel that it will only sell 2,000 copies.

www.starmen.net has the audio clip from ign talking about Earthbound.

PAWEES put that on the podtoid, I'd like to hear opinions!

Going off what Brian Keljore said, I'd really like to know your opinions on these piracy checks. Do you think other developers will ever realize the success a program like Steam can provide? It seems to me that a lot of developers are forgetting that they should be selling the experience of a video games and not a disc specifically. I don't support piracy, but it's a problem which can't ever be completely eliminated, unless you fuck over your customers as they are trying to do with Spore etc. And even with these checks in place, people will find ways around them. People need to see what programs like iTunes have done for music sales, and Steam has done for video games. Let PC gamers pay to download the game from the official site. Let people buy the convenience of the easy download. Fuck discs. Fuck places like GameStop. Rant over.

What do you think of the Nintendo channel that was just released for the US? Do you believe that Nintendo will make full use of this channel, or will it be cool for a week, and then forgotten?

Question: A hundred prisoners are each locked in a room with three pirates, one of whom will walk the plank in the morning. Each prisoner has 10 bottles of wine, one of which has been poisoned; and each pirate has 12 coins, one of which is counterfeit and weighs either more or less than a genuine coin. In the room is a single switch, which the prisoner may either leave as it is, or flip. Before being led into the rooms, the prisoners are all made to wear either a red hat or a blue hat; they can see all the other prisoners' hats, but not their own. Meanwhile, a six-digit prime number of monkeys multiply until their digits reverse, then all have to get across a river using a canoe that can hold at most two monkeys at a time. But half the monkeys always lie and the other half always tell the truth. Given that the Nth prisoner knows that one of the monkeys doesn't know that a pirate doesn't know the product of two numbers between 1 and 100 without knowing that the N+1th prisoner has flipped the switch in his room or not after having determined which bottle of wine was poisoned and what colour his hat is, what is the solution to this puzzle?

Speaking of reviews, my questions:
How much would it cost to get a 8, 9, or 10 score on Destructoid? seriously.
And, ethical or not - can/should/do publishers track reviewers stats online (to see if they played and for how long). can you be called out on your review?
I'll listen to that.

A SONNET ABOUT A GENTLEMAN DINOSAUR? Not even I can pull that off. OH SHIT WAIT

A corncob pipe and monocle he dons,
But etiquette is unbeknownst to him.
His favourite foods are neither crepes nor flans;
His only foodie pleasure comes with skin.

Miss Manners wouldn't give him time of day,
Although he tries his best to act mature.
I doubt that she would really like the way
He'd eat her; but, she always was demure.

It's tough, you see, to brush your teeth and such
With talons built like toothpicks on your chest.
While high society thinks he's too much,
The d-toid fanbase all think he's the best.

A gentleman of prehistoric girth,
I wish he wasn't extinct from this earth.

seriously that was awful. fuck you guys for making me do that.

TWO QUESTIONS FOR PODTOID:

#1. We hear about all this stuff in GTA IV that pisses people off. Does anything in it make you guys uncomfortable? (I, for one, was a little sketched out by the cynical homophobia in that one mission.)

#2. WHICH ONE OF YOU HAS THE BIGGEST CRUSH ON LITTLE OL' SONNET-WRITING ME? DON'T LIE, I WON'T TELL ANYONE

The first person perspective seems to be the most effective for for storytelling in games (bioshock, HL2). Do you you think a 3rd person view or other perspectives could be equally as compelling? any examples?

Since I wrote some theme music for the Haikus I thought if you guys want I would write some theme music for the sonnets as well! Feel free to use if if you want, and if not I can license it or something :)

@Faceless: Even with the success of steam, there are ways around it. One of my roommates pirated Portal and it worked fine for him. Not once did he have to log on to steam. I am sure within a week of release, some clever coder somewhere will find a way around these security devices.

I did this contest entry instead of studying because I MUST FIND THE MEH-TALL GE-YURRR!!!!

As for questions, I think I've got a few.
1) What do you think of this Killzone/LittleBigPlanet mashup Sony made?
2) Do you think it means Sony is planning on making more modified versions of the characters based on their franchises? Or better yet, do you think they might allow a UT3 level of character mods for the players?
3) What kinds of modified versions would you be looking forward to if this came true, and would you be willing to pay for these if they charged a small amount?

Geh, one more question. Next week, "big-ish" Fable 2 info is supposed to come out. Do you think that Fable 2 will really deliver and be as incredible as they're making it sound, or will it just end up like Fable one--not bad, but lacking all the cool/interesting stuff they said would be in (like real-time tree growth).

Gentleman Dinosaur must certainly be an English sonnet (as opposed to Italian). My iambic pentameter is not great, but here goes...

Giant lizards of dignity and grace
Drinking their tea in a leather armchair
Their stock tickers at a furious pace
My plan... I do hope they are not aware

One wears a monacle upon his eye
This gentleman from an age so long past
Would not hesitate to cause me to die
One wrong move would probably be my last

I act quickly so as not to be caught
With my intention the oddest of goals
My end achieved, a most successful plot
Embarrassment for one of these ass holes

For I took a dump in his bowler hat
Placed back on his head, it made a loud splat

Uh, I'll tell you the problem with the scientific power that you're using here: it didn't require any discipline...to attain it. You read what others had done -- and you took the next step. You didn't earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don't take any responsibility...ah...for it. You stood on the SHOULDERS of geniuses to accomplish something as FAST as you could and before you even KNEWWHATYOUHAD! you PATENTED it, and PACKAGED it, and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and (SLAM) now you're selling it, (SLAM) you wanna sell it.

What are you most tired of hearing in terms of hyperbole in reviews: groundbreaking, dynamic, "from the ground up" (thanks MrFwankie), or some other overused term?

Also, why does Aaron Linde hate Ocarina of Time so much? Is it some kind of poorly-hidden racism, sexism and homophobia?

I bought the MGS: Essentials collection and I have a quick question. Is it wrong that I am almost constantly laughing while playing? Between every scene with Eva and Snake always staring at her tits and finding out the my eyes adjusted to a previously pitch dark cave, to fuckin' Miller calling me in the air vent while I'm trying to infiltrate the base.

Anyway, love you people, especially that sexy brit Jim Sterling.

So apparently Shacknews writers were given an exclusive look at Duke Nukem forever in person at the 3d Realms offices, and saw the real live game being played, proof the game actually exists in some state or another.

Your thoughts?

I'm a retard. Good work not strangling Jack Thompson through the phone. "JIM JIM JIM JIM JIM WOULD YOU LET ME FINISH?" What an ass.
