For those of you who are lucky and tolerant enough to not be completely burned out on Final Fantasy VII spin offs, here is the supposedly leaked video of Crisis Core's pre-game introduction movie, complete with old school music, Sephiroth, and all that other stuff that Square-Enix has thoroughly raped over the past couple of years.

Call me a mean old miser if you will, but my love for Final Fantasy VII has dried and shrivelled into a decaying husk of late, thanks to Square-Enix continually picking at it like a scab that won't be allowed to heal. I hear the music, I see the Sephiroth, and none of it means anything anymore. I can only see Sephiroth so many times before all the mystery's gone and I fail to become impressed. Final Fantasy VII was, to me, the first game that hit me across the face and presented videogames as a potentially superior form of storytelling. For me to say that I no longer feel anything when I think about the game is just sad.

Sorry about the rant there. I feel like I've given you candy, but not without a long lecture about how it rots your teeth. Candy, for the record, does not rot your teeth or affect your health in any way. Keep stuffing it down kids, with extra handfuls of sugar stolen from shops.

You need faith, Jim. Square-Enix will leave Final Fantasy VII alone sooner or later. Have you tried writing letters to the company?

Thanks for the video, Jim. Candy/FFVII forever.

Still love the old FF7, like the movie, like DoG, and am getting this.

Exploring shitty universes = Fail. Exploring good ones = Win.

I wish I wanted to play this game, but it looks tedious as fuck.

Maybe I can convince some one else to play it while I occasionally watch the cutsenes and eat chips.

That worked for the Metal Gear Solid games.

luckily for me i have ignored every single spin-off. cept Advent Children. So the raping of FFVII is something that I'm not sick and tired off. From the jump it was Crisis Core I always wanted, even though the complete compilation of Final Fantasy VII sucks ass

even though thier FFVI remake sucked

even though that lame FF III for the DS sucked

I can't help but feel we will be rewarded with crisis core. im probably asking for it but there has to be at least one more good game to come from that company

dude... now cmon, seriously? I cannot understand how you can claim to once loved FFVII and youre not excited for this. Theres a need, that we FF fans have had unfulfilled for many a year. That need, was to return to the worlds we loved so much, to continue the stories of characters we grew to care about. And of course, VII was the first on most peoples list. In no other FF, have they managed to get everything so... right.
They gave us a taste of sequels, with X-2. It wasnt so good. Our need, our thirst for sequels was unquenched. Then, came along advent children...
Now i dont know about anyone else, but i consider ac as both a piece of brilliance and a terrible tragedy. Its a kick ass movie, but therein lies the problem - its a movie. Not a game. So, the need goes on...

Dirge of cerberus? Nah, piece of crap. We still need them to make a bloody sequel!!!
And then comes along crisis core. Not a sequel, but a prequel, something they already have the groundwork for, that they just need to flesh out. And its on the psp, which could really do with something sweet by square. Finally, it looks like theyre going to return to one of their best creations, and flesh it out and make it better than before, in the form of a game. A good game. About freakin time!
Oh god i hope this game is good, if not my faith might be destroyed too...

Finally, sephiroth is not mysterious. Hes bad ass. Hes the man. Hes one of the few villians i consider to be among the greatest, coolest characters ever. You can bag on crisis core, and VII, and FF in general, but not sephiroth.

I still have no idea what this game looks like. Enough with the shitty cutscenes and show proper gameplay footage.

"Theres a need, that we FF fans have had unfulfilled for many a year. That need, was to return to the worlds we loved so much, to continue the stories of characters we grew to care about."

Really? You never liked how everything was self contained and left to the imaginations of the fans? You never liked how, rather than overshoot, they left it as it was, rather than risk doing an injustice to the legacy?

One thing I respected about Final Fantasy was that each story was left as it was. I admired that. I admired one company's ability to leave something alone, to say "this is done" and move on. Now I have no respect for it because not only did they revisit a story that needed no revisiting, they actually whored it to hell and back.

"In no other FF, have they managed to get everything so... right. "

Which should be precisely the reason why you LEAVE IT ALONE. Talk to George Lucas about what happens when you create something with a legacy, and then keep going back to add more and shit all over it.

"They gave us a taste of sequels, with X-2. It wasnt so good."

Should've been the first clue that they don't work.

[i]"Then, came along advent children...

It was okay as a piece of trashy, disposable anime. That's all it was. Just a bit of flashy anime with better special effects. I liked bits of it, but I tell you what -- the pathetic excuse to bring back Sephiroth for five minutes just for a pointless fight scene was awful. It was cheap writing at its worse, and yet more overexposure of a character who should have remained immortalized, not dragged back constantly.

You don't understand how I could not want to go back to FFVII, I can't understand how you'd want to. It was perfect as it was, I don't think any FF should be revisited, ever. I'm not against cameos and things, like with Kingdom Hearts, outside of canon, but come on. If FFVII was so perfect and so right, why keep adding more and more until all the wonder and mystery is gone?

"Finally, sephiroth is not mysterious. Hes bad ass. Hes the man. Hes one of the few villians i consider to be among the greatest, coolest characters ever. You can bag on crisis core, and VII, and FF in general, but not sephiroth."

He WAS badass. Now he's becoming a cliche'. Where he was once ominous and intimidating, now he's "meh". It's Sephiroth, he's been so exposed that he's not impressive anymore. It's like a horror movie -- you keep watching that same scary bit again and again and again, it's not going to be scary anymore. Hear a joke enough times and it ceases to be funny. Sephiroth? He's not badass anymore.

Jim if you're ticked off with all the FFVII paraphernalia, what do you expect?
Squeenix is doing anything any company would do. And this isn't the first time they've done it. They've sequelized FF X, made a trio of games based in Ivalice (does Fabula Novalis Crystallis ring a bell?)and spawned the bastard child that is Dirge of Cerebrus.

i think we should be happy they're not going EA on us. Else we'd have seen FFVII- 69 HARDCORE HIPHOP METROSEXUAL PINK EDITION!

I think we'll have to agree to disagree jim. I loved VII, but i want to see what happens next. I want to know what happened before. Its not my world, i cant invent its past and future. But i can almost see your point, that its self contained and great just as it is.

I suppose ill agree that advent children wont win awards for story or dialog. As much as i love to have such things in a game (or movies), im quite happy with sweet special effects and amazing fight scenes. I liked that sephiroth came back, but youre right that it was kind of a pointless ressurection, now that i think more of it.

I really disagree with the kingdom hearts stuff though. I think thats what cheapens that characters. I love FF characters, and Disney characters are fine in their own right. Mixing them(for utterly no reason, other than its a square/disney game) just doesnt work. Non-canon it may be, but its still part of how the character is viewed.

I dont know where youve seen sephiroth so often... ive only seen him in VII and AC. Both times he was cool, both times he was pretty much unstoppable except by cloud. But, hey, to each his own.

On the other hand, if this game turns out to be another X-2, ill come crawling over to your side, since itll prove that square just cant make sequels/prequels.

lol Jim, just saw the opening scene. i think i agree with you. The word "raped" definitely applies. They should've pulled out something different.

Meh but i'll still buy it. If it sucks then, Squeenix should just stop making sequels.

FFVII Spinoff's may be good or bad, but i'd always take the chance for exploring the universe. Also knowing more of Zack would be nice as Zack is teh awesome.

I hope we play as Cloud for a segment :)

Uematsu is not doing the music, which was pretty apparent from the first few notes. Insert sad panda face here.

Also, they have a Continuity Director. That makes me giggle inside.

I miss the days when most FFVII fans just assumed the human race was destroyed at the end of the original game. "More," "what happens next," etc? There was none of this speculative gibbering, but everyone had their own thoughts of what the ending meant. That's what made it so good, in my opinion.

FF VII is an awesome game, granted, you may even call it one of the best there is and I'll agree...but does every good game NEED a sequel?? I mean, it's story is great, it can leave you wanting more, but the game really satisfies you...if you're gonna do a sequel, then make sure it lives up to standards, or else you'd be better off working for EA and Madden 2087 (you know they wanna make it)

this is the first FFVII spinoff that's got me excited - in fact, it's one of the reasons i'm buying a PSP (that, and there are finally more than a handful of games i want on it). here's to hoping my expectations are met.

and VII isn't even my favorite FF.

oh, and please stop dissing FFX-2. them's my girls.
