We don't know much about Mirror's Edge, but it sure looks pretty photo

It's been the better part of a year since we first read EA's announcement that they were working on a game called Mirror's Edge, and since that time, new information on the title has been slow in coming. What we do know, is that the game's supposed utopian city revolves around the concept of citizens relinquishing their personal freedom in exchange for what amounts to a facade -- all is not so sterile and clean beneath the surface. To quote one of our tags below, "Big Brother is gonna get you!"

At the core of this first-person-action game is movement, so if senior producer Owen O'Brien's description sounds like Assassin's Creed, it's done purposely:

"The first thing we wanted to look at was just getting the feeling of movement and momentum, so walking, jogging and running -- very simple things, but things that haven't really been done well in first-person shooters. You don't even have a gun - instead you're told to concentrate on moving quickly, maintaining momentum through tricky environments, much as we did during the freer-flowing parts of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed.
Controls are deliberately simple: movement and view-adjustment on the analogue sticks, and then context-sensitive "up" and "down" functions on a pair of buttons (presumably the triggers - did we mention it was dark?). "Up" can be jumping, climbing, wall-running, vaulting, or grabbing hold of something above you, like a zip-line, while "down" can be used to perform a power-slide under a low object, or to break your fall with a parachute roll."

As you can see by these new screenshots, Mirror's Edge is shaping up to be an eye pleaser. It certainly looks like its namesake, and has piqued the interest of at least one Destructoid editor. Mirror's Edge is still without a firm release date, but we'll be relaying new information about the game as we acquire it.

The game sure looks great. Hopefully there will be an engaging story, other wise its just another pretty face with no personality.

Wow, if they can pull this off I will be happy.

I said this when I first encounted the game a while back; this has the potential to be epic. With some of the recent innovations in how we play FPSs, like getting knocked off your feet, time slowing down and different movement possibilities from lying down, crouching and standing, I've got high hopes for what they can do with this. Matrix parkour, I'm hoping.

Yeah, I been watching this game eagerly, after Edge magazine did a great feature on it last year. This game is really gonna shake up the FPS genre, for the better. I hope it does really well.

It doing the kinds of things that fps games have avoided for so long. Kudos to DICE.

Now THIS is a game that has caught my eye. And it's being developed here in Sweden, double win! I especially like how we're promised how we actually have to flee, instead of fighting off squads and squads of morons getting drawn into your every counter-kill...like in Assassin's Creed.

It does look damn pretty! I can't remember the last FPS I played that let you see your own feet....

Looks like a melee combat FPS in those screens.

I hope the gun models? are sophisticated & semi futuristic looking. Everything looks soooo incredibly clean. I had my eyes on this for a LONG time, glad there's some screens of it FINALLY.

Also,

I'm REALLY REALLY looking forward to this one based on some of the stuff I read about it. Assuming the parkour stuff is done right, it could be amazingly fun.

I want to see some actual new media on this game. The only screeshots we have are from E3 2007. They can talk about the game but i want to see a trailer or a tech demo or something. This game has been on my radar but I don't want to care about the game until i see something substantial.

My biggest concern is the character's obvious tribal tattoo that you can see on his right arm in the second picture. Game designers should know by now that tribal tattoos aren't "in" anymore.

And I agree with Namelessted. *shudder* Never thought I'd say that.

@ZeroTolo

Would it be okay if the character was a woman with tribal tattoos? Because I believe that's the case

Plus, I read something else and it seems like a on-rail game what?

Male... Female...

Gender matters not as far as tribal tattoos are concerned.

The prospect of a melee combat FPS in which you could like... jump from building to building Crackdown style... that would be amazing

Looks kind of cool, but platforming in first-person games is typically pretty hit or miss. More often miss, which inspired me to write a Monthly Musings about it.

Crackdown was (is) fun. This looks more of a chore, trying to get the leaps right... and no weapons? Maybe i'm a little dyed in the wool with FPS games, but if i've got to face off against strangers on roof-tops and a freaking helicopter, you better give me some guns!
