I think they can hold up. Adding some kind of depth to a beat em up is the best way. Enemy variability, combos, animations, backgrounds, weapons, and characters are some things that can be given some depth and fleshed out to make a better beat em up. I think that's what made the Scott Pilgrim game so good.
If there were a single Double Dragon game they must use as reference, make it Double Dragon 2. That one is the best.

Hohojirozame said it best. Add more elements, make it deeper and I'l gladly play that Beat-em up game. Back then it usually went like: Punch-punch-punch, enemy goes down, wait until it gets back up, then repeat until its dead. Do that to everyone until you either win or they manage to gang-up on you and you die.
This looks like the box art for 3D games from the 90's... you know, the stuff which looked better than the in-game graphics of the time, but pales in comparison to what we've got today?

Beat-em-ups should definitely be a genre still, but I don't want people to simply retread everything done 20 years ago. Evolve the genre, add new gameplay elements, RPG leveling systems, new grabs and counters, bone breaks, watch a Tony Jaa film for fuck's sake.
Who on earth thinks there isn't a market for a "beat up a bunch of people" game? I mean, god, just make a good one and I'm all over it. Streets of Rage 2 still definitely holds up. Make something at least as good as that ancient game. Even better, go beyond it. It blows my mind that it hasn't been done yet. The closest to it was Shenmue.

@Mike Moran: WUT?? How is Final Fight on the same level as streets of rage? IMO, FF is down at the bottom with DD.

Of course not when they look like that. Except for the kinda cool neon effect, it looks like total ass. This is a game that basically begs for Cel Shading. Unless something changes I'll have to pass. Which sucks, as DD brings a lot of fun memories back.

It depends on what else is packed into the Beat 'Em Up. If they have a leveling system, multiple characters, secrets, and mini-games, then the replay value can be extended quite far. (See: Castle Crashers, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.)
I trust wayforward to put enough content in and have good mechanics/systems, but even I (being a huge wayforward fanboy) think that looks crappy. But if they add that wayforward love and skill plus all the stuff megaseven said, I'm down as fuck. Graphics ain't everything.
If anyone hasn't played the GBA Double Dragon, do so. New moves, new stages, better controls. It's one of my favorite fighting games ever.

I'm sure this will be okay but can we please just have the arcade version? I can't even find an emulation of that anywhere. Someone please get the rights so we can have a PSN/XBLA version...that or I dunno even throw it in as a bonus for this game...whatever I'll buy it!

Hey, remember how on Saturday Morning Hangover when you guys were talking to one of the guys from WayForward and I said in the chat "I really think WayForward should make a Double Dragon game" and Conrad was like "I would like to see that" and now they're actually doing it? Fucking coincidence, don't you think?
EggmaniMN has a point. Guardian Heroes is one of the few old-school beat-em-ups that is still worth playing. The battle system is much more complex than Double Dragon's.
If you think Double Dragon is good, you're living in crazy nostalgiaville. Streets of Rage on the other hand, is the fucking shit. Also I need to get that Guardian Heroes HD thing, I always forget it exists.

You have to judge a game in the context of the time it was released, DD was the gtame to popularise to define and popuierise the beat em up, for an game released in 1987 its very good.
Its almost like calling street fighter 2 crap because its so simple compared to modern fighters.

Not really a lover of 2.5D beat em ups, its the 2D sprites that make a oldschool beat em up good imo. As someone said this game needed some cell shading, like that Guardian Heroes clone coming to 3ds, that game is how you make a 3D beatem up.

WayForward hasn't done too good with 3D so far, but I remain hopefuly that they can get it right here. Also, while this is cool I would much rather have Guardian Heroes HD on PSN. Because man, man oh man... that game was the tits dot com.
