Wave of phishing attacks target your Steam accounts [Update] photo

A number of you may soon be receiving a very convincing email that appears to come from the Steam reset password system: Don't click that link!  The URL displayed in the email actually points to "steampowrad.t35.com" -- you can tell by mousing over the link and looking at your status bar.  Clever and extremely shady, but certainly convincing otherwise (which prompted me to blog it half awake in my underwear).  This is especially hard to detect on mobile devices because most phones don't have the equivalent of a status bar.  If you ever get an email like this on your phone you should always wait to double check it on your computer. Unless you like rape.

I can only hope the bastard behind this scam orders office chairs from China.

[Update! Aaron "Bluewolf72" Moloy went beyond the call of duty by contacting the hosting company who we've learned promptly nuked the account. Buuuuuuuuuuuurn!]

This is just the latest in a continually ongoing stream of phishing attempts. Steam is continually plagued by them. Humorously, the last time a big one targeted me the guy who used a stolen account to message me sent me the link to their stolen account list instead of the link to the phishing log-in.

Thanks for the heads-up you magnificent helmet-wearing god.

Also, that chair story is fucked up. I also need to read more gadget blogs like Gizmodo. Maybe we could use a new addition to the Modern Method family?

Firefox is handily already flagging this as a web forgery - I guess the other modern browsers are doing the same.
Hurrah for phishing blacklists!

thanks for the notice. I've surprisingly always dodged email viruses and scams when they come around, but it's always good to know when to look out for them.

Also it's 'steamcommunity' in e-mails, not 'steampowered' ... when you're reading fast I guess it'd be easy to glance over that.

Thanks for the heads up. Haven't received one yet, but have my guard up now.

Also, I find it funny that you blurred the word "me" at the top of the e-mail.

It's also hard to check in Safari due to the lack of that feature, if I remember correctly, but I usually assume that Mac users install another browser anyway.

You should keep aware of who adds you to the friend list...
There are some idiots that use this system to "try" to steal your account... and will send you some links saying, something like "Do you want free steam games?" or some other bullshit.
