Watchmen: The End is Nigh screenshots, environment art photo

Pardon the quote. It seemed appropriate.

Warner Bros. has released the first official batch of screenshots for the upcoming episodic action title, Watchmen: The End is Nigh. They look decent but they're also still images and I can't shake this sinking feeling that I'm not going to like what I see when they're in motion. I would love for this to be a game that pays homage to my favorite graphic novel without tarnishing its legacy. And I have just slightly more hope for that than Rorschach has about, well, everything.

Along with the batch of screens, some concept art for the environments has appeared as well. The design of the front of Happy Harry's Bar might as well be a shooped version of an early promotional still put out for the film. For that matter, they probably just decided to save the money on concept art for the game and passed it off as being new.

If the thought of a Watchmen beat-em-up depresses you terribly, here's something I discovered while writing this story which might put a wry smile on your face. Click this link to www.whowatchesthewatchmen.com (totally SFW). I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

The quote I would have gone with:

I read Watchmen for the first time about a month ago, and while my anticipation for the movie increased, I definitely began to question how it could work in another medium. Doubly so for a beat-'em-up prequel. A Watchmen video game should play with/off of the medium the same way the original novel did.

Also, this is probably old news, but they've set up a viral New Frontiersman website and YouTube channel. It's worth checking out.

I tracked down and read watchmen after all the fuss over the movie, so even if Hollywood fuck this up (and I'm near certain they will), I'll be glad they tried.
As for the game, this actually sounds pretty cool. Prequel, you say? There is no good reason this couldn't work, as long as the developers respect the subject matter. Hell, cracking heads as Rorschach has got to be worth renting, at the very least.
Also, cainball wins the internets.

Obviously I love watchmen utterly and completely, as any sane person should. But I really don't know if I could play a beat em up version, I feel like it's soiling something about it. It doesn't feel pure... I donno...
Maybe a game where you were just Rorschach going around solving crimes while leaving a bloody trail behind you, maybe I could handle that. But something doesn't feel right here.

Purely as it is Watchmen, I shall get this. I'm cautiously hopeful the movie won't suck. But yet I fear it will.

That said, I loved (loved, loved) the film adaption of V for Vendetta.

The movie is going to be pretty much the novel, but without a giant squid. Sad but that makes me excited to see it.

I still don't understand how they'll be able to condense Watchmen down to a 2 hour movie. It would work much better as a 5 hour miniseries or something. And a beat em up Watchmen just doesn't jive with me either...

The Watchmen game should be a point-n-click ...

I am not as hateful of the game as everyone else (and I have been a watchman fan from day 1), but personally I would have liked to have seen it cell shaded since we are already getting a more realistic watchmen with the movie

I'm glad they went for a prequel, that way it can work as an action game. The comics were amazing (my favorite, in fact), but there's not enough action to make a game about it. Works perfectly in the comic, but a game could be boring.
Unless, of course, it was a different genre, like an adventure game or whatever.
