For those who aren't familiar with the tale of Star Wars Battlefront III, grab your midnight dust and gather around the campfire. Initially, reportedly in 2006, Free Radical Design (now known as Crytek UK) was tasked by LucasArts to develop a third entry to the widely successful Battlefront series.
In 2009, there were rumblings of a full cancellation of the project, for completely unknown reasons -- rumors started to fly that Pandemic Studios was taking back developmental duties, but they quickly denied the claim. Some time later we learned that the real reason for the cancellation was because it was killed by Lucasarts "psychopaths".
Fast forward to 2012, and we're still fawning over the project. If you're so inclined, nearly a full hour of new footage has surfaced for LucasArt's ill-fated Battlefront III. One of the major features of the game was the ability to seamlessly fly starships from ground battles up into space on the same map.
As a Star Wars fan, I can't help but wonder how this game would have turned out. Even if it was released to poor critical reception, I know that my friends and I would have played this into the morning light on more than one occasion. Oh well.
Lets gather round the campfire and sing our campfire song. Our C-A-M-P-F-I-R-E S-O-N-G song. And if you don't think that we can sing it faster then you're wrong but it'll help if you just sing along.
It's massive companies run by aging misguided fools that make decisions like this. Everything "Star Wars" coming out these days is just sad looking, even that Boba Fett cover based shooter game or whatever that's in the works.. I know this video is old but thanks for posting it, it has reminded me once again what I dislike about Lucasarts in the last decade.
EA should invest in THIS instead of a star wars (not very) MMO.
Of course, they would fuck it up with Origin and shit, but THIS is the star wars product they want to do, it's their true "futuristic battlefield" and bearing the star wars name it could very well face CoD brand power face on.
"Initially, reportedly in 2006, Free Radical Design (now known as Crytek UK) was tasked by LucasArts to develop a third entry to the widely successful Battlefront series, created by the now defunct Pandemic Studios."
The wording on that is incredibly awkward and confusing. An editor for any real news site would have had you fix that before publishing it. Might be worth fixing.
Anyway. There's a reason why LucasArts has been having financial issues. They have no idea what the fuck they're doing. They'll invest in a $200 million dollar premium MMO, but they can't be bothered to do a $20 million dollar sequel in the same franchise that would be 2 or 3 times as profitable. Battlefront III is just a no duh.
I beginning to think that LucasArts is pulling a Valve and is just incapable of counting to 3. On top of Kotor and Battlefront, you got Jedi Knight and Force Unleashed. Hell, Republic Commando didn't get ANY sequel.
First Paradox died, then Free Radical. What sick, twisted future do we live in? This is most certainly the end of times. I really do miss those studios :[
Republic Commando and Battlefront both needed a sequel and I think both could have been fused to make a crazy game. Their gameplay is similar enough and the AI in Commando is the best to this day so both games would enjoy mutual gain. Campaign is Commando stuff and multiplayer/bot modes+galactic conquest would have the usual Battlefront stuff we know and love.
