Watch the Main Drag's first video, A Jagged Gorgeous Winter photo

Ok, before you guys start flaming me, I should get this out of the way: what you're about to read is only tangentially related to videogames. It is, however, very much related to Calvin and Hobbes, so you're going to like it anyway.

The Main Drag is a band comprised of five guys, four of which work for Harmonix, a company self-styled "musical curators" who has the reputation that each of its employees knows how to play an instrument. You might have heard of Rock Band?

Anyway, The Main Drag's first single, "A Gorgeous Jagged Winter" is a.) awesome, b.) in Rock Band 2 c.) used in some Target ads promoting the game and d.) awesome. Check out the new video below the jump.

I really like the synth hook and the fact that one of the singers, dressed in a tiger suit, is playing a black trumpet. Are you listening, world? There is a man in a TIGER suit who plays the TRUMPET. In fact, the entire video is a giant homage to Calvin and Hobbes (which explains the tiger suit but not the trumpet), complete with keytar and sledding. Now, if we can just get the Main Drag to lose the novelty sunglasses, we'll be in business.

The Main Drag are based out of Boston, which incidentally, is where Harmonix is. They're currently on tour, and you can hear more of their music on their MySpace page.

The drummer is one of the HMX devs. He explain the drum track and how it was charted/edited together/played in general on the Rock Band forums a long time back.

Fun trivia: The Calvin and Hobbes strip Joseph used was the very last one.

Whew, I thought I was the only one that thought a)they sound like poop falling down stairs, and b) that video was the worst produced steaming pile I have ever seen. I mean, come on, I know filming videos is just a bunch of miming, but still, they weren't even close to being in sync.

If you want to see how videos are supposed to be filmed, check out my friend's site. He directed the latest Fray video, and did the latest Alkaline Trio vid. Great stuff. Winch & Pulley

Ah, thank you for being one of the few blogs to note the reason why game blogs are reporting on this - that it features Harmonix devs in the band. Anyway, loved the song for a while, nice to see them make an actual video for it instead of the cheaply produced one found elsewhere.

Eh, I like the chorus and the hooks, but I will say that the verse kind of drags the rest of the song down. I didn't want to shit on them in the actual post, though -- no need to be negative.

This is why Watterson wanted to keep Calvin and Hobbes in Calvin and Hobbes.

@PappaDukes:

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that The Fray probably had a larger budget than a (mostly local) Boston, MA band. Just throwing that out there.

That was a weird video, but I give 'em major props for referencing Calvin and Hobbes.

I kind of like this song in RB. I don't know if I realized it was Harmonix dudes.

Everything can use more Calvin and Hobbes. I wish there weren't a last one.

I hear this song on the radio in Los Angeles. It's catchy. Love the hook, as I really love the nighttime.

I used to have that last comic, laminated. And then my mother threw it away.

I don't know what you guys are talking about, this song is awesome. I'm glad Joseph posted this vid because I had been trying to find the song's music video. I didn't know they were harmonix people though, that's pretty awesome
