Earlier in the week, hackers unlocked Bass and a bunch of other DLC from Mega Man 10. I'd show you what they found, but that would make Capcom sad. Instead, I'll show you this official video from Capcom Japan. It shows off Bass, one of the game's first bits of DLC, set to hit Wii consoles on April 5th.
If you dropped out the Mega Man scene after the NES era, you may not be familiar with Bass (pronounced 'base'). I'd catch you up, but there isn't much to say, other than the fact that he's like Mega Man but with giant ear-flaps and perpetually angry eyebrows. As far as evil rivals go, he's not quite as lame as Shadow the Hedgehog, but not quite as awesome as Wario. At least he's really fun to use, with the ability to aim in seven directions and fuse with his purple robot-wolf-dog-pal-thing. Also, he loves reggae.
Speaking of music, how do you like the song in that video? It's from Solar Man's stage in Mega Man 10. Some people hate it, but I think it's killer rock, man.

So he plays mostly like he did in Rockman & Forte, huh? I can't tell if he has a double-jump (betting no) but it's nice they retained his multidirectional aiming.
I've been a fan of the older Mega Man soundtracks for over 20 years now and I really love almost everything that Capcom's composers wrote for Mega Man 9 and the new game. From what I've heard so far, 10's soundtrack is a welcome return to the jazzier vibes of the Mega Man 3, 4, and 5 soundtracks. So far, my favorite theme is Chill Man's. Solar Man's theme is that same kind of delightful blues-inflected party rock (a bit on the power-metal side too), and it's makes sense, seeing as composer Yasuaki Fujita's past resume (awesome work like the Capcom's Darkwing Duck, Skyblazer, Destiny of an Emperor II, that awesome Neogeo shmup Pulstar, etc...).
It's annoying that I'm already seeing some internet jerks puling about how 10's soundtrack isn't as good as 9's, etc... Are we looking at a microcosmic variety of retro goggles here...the same variety of bullshit that caused NES players to damn Mega Man 6 when it came out.
DLC really should be free, or at least included in the game from the get-go and jack up the overall price. These hackers have the right idea. It's sickening how extra modes that used to be standard in games just ten years ago are now things you need to pay for.
DLC should not be free. There's nothing wrong with DLC costing money. The problem here is that you aren't downloading content, you're downloading a code to unlock content you already paid for. And that IS a problem.
If you're going to lie to us, Capcom, at least do it in a believable way. Even if you finished your Bass 'add-on' before the game launched, just don't include it in the original game and download the actual content afterwards. It would save a lot of anger.
I already was annoyed with Bass being DLC, but finding out all of the DLC is just an unlock really grates on me. Once again, Megaman 10 is retro in every way except they're being douches with DLC, this would be unlockable on older systems.
DLC has a separate budget, often times with a separate team working on it, and as such has it's own costs. If the DLC code is in the original game code or not doesn't mean much.
They could have charged $18 for all the content in Mega Man 10 with all the DLC unlocked from the start, but I think it's better this way. Those who want to play MM10 but don't care about Bass, the three special stages, or Endless mode, can just buy the core game for $10 and be done with it. Those who want the extra content have options.
Options are good, and therefore, DLC is good. Of course, free DLC is even better, but that's asking a lot.
Sometimes I think that all the free demos on PSN/XBLA and easy piracy on the Wii/PSP/DS has some gamers thinking that games should always be free.
Yes but why can't the DLC be included with the initial package? This isn't super complex stuff that couldn't have been included in a game ten years ago. It's as if Rez HD were to include its Direct Assault or Score Attack modes as DLC. Those kinds of things are kind of a "given" in those types of games, and should not be extra money. I'm actually very surprised those modes weren't DLC in Rez HD, seems like something slimy the current gaming climate would do.
I'm all for extending the life span of games via DLC, I don't even mind paying for it if it's good enough. My problem is with companies putting content into their games, before the game is even released, then locking said content expecting consumers to purchase unlock keys from the market place just to use the content. That is what I despise.
Why the fuck is ANYBODY making issues about the DLC at this point?!? Are you fucking kidding. The game came out less than a week ago. It might make sense for people to actually finish the game (a game that I would have paid $50 for in 1991) before they start whining about how a bunch of add-ons aren't free-of-charge like every emulated thing they've stolen in the past ten years. I'd like to see more people bitching about how the shitty and unproven 360 and PS3 games they run out to buy have to cost 3-6 times the price. Motherfucking stupid brats...
Brats? I don't think you read the same thing I did...
How is it bratty to complain about the fact that the DLC is literally already installed on our consoles, but that we have to pay AGAIN for the right to use it? This is completely separate from charging us for new content. We literally already paid to download the Bass DLC, since the files themselves were included with the "standard" MM 10 download. It is on our hard drives. Now we have to pay again to access it?
It's a psychological thing. Consumers like to feel that DLC is something "extra" - an addition to the game.
If it's something already part of a game (that you already paid for), or if the game itself appears to be incomplete without the DLC, then people feel like they've been bait-and-switched.
It's about whether you as a consumer bought a program and have ownership of it in full, or whether you simply paid to license 90% of it.
I think Capcom should have released MM10 with all the content available from the beggining, the extended replay value within the extra content would a decent cause to raise the price to $15 or $18..
But then again, people wouldn't understand it and would start whining anyway about paying too much for a non-HD "20 year old game"..
It´s kinda complicated, I guess there's no way to make everyone happy
If they had all the DLC unlocked and raised the initial price they would sell less units. Get over it people. I think the DLC is fair and I was under the impression that everyone accepted the microtransaction system.
Man, I'm so tired of having to pay for things that developers make. I wish everything were free and no one was compensated for their hard work and effort.
Also, I wish I just had everything a game had to offer me, and that no one ever gave me a choice on what features i want in a game. Companies should just make me pay for the whole thing up front. What jerks. Giving me options.
...
Bass looks cool. Not a fan of him, really, but he's translated nicely, it seems
And therein lies the problem. I've said it before, if all the content was available right from the start, there'd be people complaining that they have to pay almost $20 for a retro game with stuff they don't care about, etc. etc.
Myself, I've been a MM fan for a long time, so 9 and 10 were instant buys for me. IMO, 10's music isn't as catchy as 9's, but Solar Man's theme is the standout. And Bass looks interesting enough gameplay-wise to download.
paid DLC ultimately turned me off of this generation of Consoles. I got sick of being hustled for this stuff that's already in the game. Street Fighter 4's Alternate Costumes fucking did it for me. THEY WERE ALREADY ON THE BLOODY DISC!!! I had already paid 60 dollars for the damn game. As much respect as I have for Japan, and as much business as I do with their dealers, they're some of the most heebish people on this earth. Gotta be really careful with some of the Japanese like Kentaro Nakagawa (Susi-Sumo-Jpn) on eBay, and most of the Hong Kong dealers, along with a few of the folks in Thailand. I'm happy with my Twin Fami, Super Fami, and my completely refurbished PC Engine Duo-R.
I see your point. It's a little unusual for the DLC to not really be DLC. However, I don't agree with anyone that it's bullshit of them to ask us for small unlocking prices. It's not as if the unlockable content takes up an egregious amount of memory or causes the game to malfunction. I'll agree that an example like the SFIV alternate costumes is way more over the line (since the game costs $60 and the DLC does nothing to add to the gameplay), but the Mega Man 10 examples are no comparison to that. The Wii store even stops to remind you about the situation before you finalize your order, so there's no arm-twisting involved. I just think some of you are splitting hairs over extra costs that are almost non-existent.
The "brats" comment is not directed towards anyone here as much as its aimed squarely at the countless reprehensible gamers I've met who will automatically and joylessly try to pirate anything they can whenever they can. It gets to the point where it becomes an affront to their sensitive souls to suggest that they actually pay for things once in a while (especially seeing as they'll never hold back when buying cigarettes, alcohol, new phones, clothes, or car accessories). I get especially annoyed at the numerous ways those kinds of assholes treat retro games.
Who hates the Solar Man level theme?!!?! It's KICKASS!
I have to say, overall, so far (I'm not up to the castle yet), I like 9's soundtrack better than 10s. But that doesn't matter that much, it's still great.
Awsome music imo. However, the song at the very beginning of ghe trailer, was it just me or does that sound remarkably close to the opening theme used in "Silent Debuggers" on the TG16? Maybe it's like the case where Rock's stage music in "Garou:MotW" sounds exactly like Robert Miles' club track "Children". Or maybe it's like where Robo's theme from "Chrono Trigger" sounds like a midi conversion of Rick Astley's "Never gonna give you up" & it's all just a huge coincidence? Either good to see they put the Bass & the Treble back in Mega Man.
I agree, DLC shouldn't be free. However, Bass isn't DLC. He's just unplayable until you buy the unlock codes for him. Think I'll pass on that one, I have a problem with paying for something that was included in the package I bought in the first place. I'll just wait until the unlock codes come out.
I would honestly feel good about giving Capcom's developers (and Nintendo) the extra couple of bucks (and let's remember that Bass only costs 2 DOLLARS) if only to encourage a continuing supply of this kind of retro goodness. I similarly had no problem giving Taito a couple of bucks for the extra levels on their awesome Wiiware version of Bubble Bobble (seeing as the initial game cost something like $6, this was similarly NOT a huge investment). Fretting over the microscopic amount of hard-drive space that's being 'infringed upon' is such a shining example of people looking for a completely pathetic reason for whine and be petty about something that's completely innocuous.

Going back even to text-based RPGs this habit existed. And of course, originated in America.
If you dont want to pay for it, dont pay for it.
Fuck them.

But in all seriousness, he looks like a lot of fun to play as. Can't wait until I get my hands on him.
Mega Man 10 is fucking sweet! Dude, Bass is a damn beast! Can't wait to destroy the world with him!
