As you've already read, American McGee is returning to the twisted world of Alice with Madness Returns. The plot sees Alice released from the Rutledge Asylum and put into the care of a London psychiatrist. Alice still has her demented hallucinations so she returns to Wonderland as her last salvation. Unfortunately for her, something has gone wrong with Wonderland while she was away so she has to save it as well as herself through her adventure.

American McGee and crew aren't really ready to talk specifics, but he did state during his presentation at the EA Showcase yesterday that "like the first game, [Madness Returns] is going to focus very heavily on amazing art, awesome story, interesting puzzle, adventure and action gameplay." RJ Berg, the writer on the original game, will be back for the sequel too.

So yeah, this sounds pretty amazing. Along with the teaser and screens, Electronic Arts and developer Spicy Horse have launched the official website, Facebook page and Twitter account called @The White Rabbit that you can follow (HAR HAR) for updates to the game. What do you all think of the new Alice game?

Alice: Madness Returns is set to come out next year for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Tried getting into the original but its really dated now. So I was excited for this but those screens looks terrible. She looks as skinny and stiff as she did in the original. =/ Oh well will wait for gameplay.

Okay, American McGee hasn't made a good game since Scrapland, but I'm still excited for this. Is this enthusiasm unwarranted? Someone help!

@LOVEoo
I always thought that the skinniness and stiffness were part of the art direction. The game's characters are dark, malnourished, almost doll-like. Just look at the Cheshire Cat! I always liked it, so the screens look awesome to me...
Also, I hope this also means that the first game gets a PSN/XBL rerelease.

@TheCleaningGuy
Well Alice IS the only game he truly did right... kinda hard to see how he could screw it up

So is this a remake or a sequel? I have the original in my possession right now, but I don't think it's aged well, and I'm having a tough time telling myself to keep playing it...

Now THIS is how Burton should've made the movie.
In fact forget that all together, this is the only wonderland I'll beleive in now.

I'd rather see more bright and colorful take on Alice and definitely much less gory. But at the same time disturbingly scary. It's strange that I'd rather see every game more colorful and bright these days, perhaps it has something to do with lsd, or perhaps it's not the case. I remember playing the original Alice, can't say I enjoyed it.

Also I thought this was game's official twitter:

Too bad it's not, that would've been radical.

I'm definitely interested as I quite enjoyed the first. I don't remember it (the first game) having an "amazing story," though. Interesting premise, but I honestly don't recall much in terms of plot or character development.

@Phonics Monkey - there was an adaption of the game planned for years, but never got further than scripting. Since Burton's film, I doubt if anyone wants to see another Alice movie ever :\

Love love loved the first one - cannot wait to get it on my home console. the only problem with the first one was that it was on PC - I've never had that good enough PC for gaming really, but whack the disc in and away we go? Yes please!!!

I thought Burton'#s Alice was entertaining, not a bad watch, but THIS is how it should have been! 18/M rated, sick as fuck, it would have been awesome.

Burton is the pussy of darkness, or the dark kids producer, he's like a middle ground between kids stuff and darkness. I WANT DARKER.

At least American McGee has me covered.

Speaking of movies I'm still waiting for Mansons adaptation of Alice. It's called Phantasmagoria btw.

The only down side in the new Alice is the Unreal engine. On some screens you can see it waaay too much and I'm really not a big fan of the built-in shaders. I hope they get rid of all that crap shaders and make it something less "unreal". :D

I would be annoyed by all the console comments in here if it wasn't for the fact that Alice being a PC exclusive never made any sense. I was glad to have it though, make no mistake... not the greatest game, but decent, and the style really made it stand out.

I still have my big box version of it with the diary and all that... lovely stuff.

Nothing with the name "american mcgee" on it has been what I'd consider good in any way except for maybe the initial concept. I loved the ideas behind Scrapland, Bad Day L.A., and even Alice, but none of those wre even remotely enjoyable to play. even Alice was tedious and frustrating when I tried playing it... Take away this man's design credentials and let him make a CG movie or something instead.

"Okay, American McGee hasn't made a good game since Scrapland, but I'm still excited for this. Is this enthusiasm unwarranted? Someone help!"

@TheCleaningGuy: Please. Ever noticed that the game was titled "American McGee PRESENTS Scrapland?

The talented folks at Mercury Steam designed the game. McGee lent his name to the project. And people like you think he was the talent behind the vision.

Do you know the name of the designer behind Scrapland? Of course not. And that is the problem, really.

You are being guided by a marketable name.

And you know what? This game won't bomb; in fact, it will be quite good simply because EA is bankrolling the project and has a team of talented developers, artists and designers behind the game, making sure that despite his meddling the game will be a hit with critics and gamers alike.

At the end of the day though, all you will remember is the guy's name, not the real talent behind the game.

Such a shame.

These screens look excellent. I am now absolutely certain that this game will look even better than the first one. If they can get Chris Vrenna back, the atmosphere's in the bag. If the gameplay is half-decent, I'll be totally satisfied.

Today is a good day.

"Like the last game, this one is going to focus on everything." uhhhh... whut? That's not really focus.

If they bring the gryphon back (and why not, it's crazyteims) for more than a get-killed role, I'll buy it. :P

I loved the first game, it was one of the best thing's I'd ever payed on a PC at the time. The story and characters were amazing, I adored it. Thing is... the more a synopsis for this game being public, it seems like it has the same story line as the first (things suck, back to wonderland, IT SUCKS TOO!!!) So I cant wait to see what the whole product actually is. I personally wouldn't mind a rehash, but with this new teaser (what a damn tease it is...) I can say i'm anticipating it quite drastically.

Also, I simply love getting on D-toid and seeing Alice along the top headlines. So awesome.

Unreal Dude, I can see some of the differences with the stories. As a fan and owner of the first game myself :P. In the first game, do remember she go called to wonderland by mainly the white rabbit and his friends, she didn't exactly go there on free will. In this one she is going there by free will, my only really worry story wise is who is the ultimate villain, the queen of hearts or the red queen? Because it was the latter she 'defeated' in the last game.

Renvenile, it's nice to know someone else here played the original and knows of the storylines. Anyhow, see, though she didn't go there by free will, it was mostly due to her catatonic state from the trauma of her family and house burning to the ground. Now... my biggest problem is, the trauma of her life warped Wonderland into the wasteland she traveled to in the first game, but she relinquished it in the original at the end of the game, everything turned cheery and such again.
The problem I guess is, if she's going BACK to a warped Wonderland, with all the same warped characters, doesn't it seem like the same game all over again? Perhaps I'm simply jumping the gun from excitement, since in the original, she went to Wonderland in the confides of the mental house, and in this one, it seems she's being hypnotized to induce either a rendezvous in Wonderland, or simply a retelling/expansion of the universe.
Simply Put: I can't wait for this game.

@Revenile: I doubt that the Queen of Hearts was killed at the climax of the first part. All of the other may went back to sanity after the Queen of HEart was beaten, but that does not mean that she is gone. A psychological trama or problem does not vanish like this. It takes a long time to work on it, and if Alice was not ready yet, it was an easy thing for the Queen of HEart to reurn.

But these are only my two coins.

I am interested in this because fuck sleep.
I wasn't expecting the blood, even after seeing the screenshot. It was like my balls were a Ziplock bag and somebody suddenly pulled it inside out and locked it. :/
Anyways, I seriously am interested in the CONCEPT. Wish it was placed in better hands though.

American McGee's Alice sort of merged the Queen of Hearts and the Red Queen into one character. If you pay attention to the dialogue during the game, she's actually referred to by both names at different times. Personally I quite like it that way.
