Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Talk about under the radar -- I was just slapped in the face with this video not ten minutes ago. "Dude," said the harbinger of my wallet's destruction, "Check it out: it's like a fighter, but with shmup-style play. It's called Senko no Ronde, on the 360. It looks awesome." Holy crap, it does. Well, maybe I'll import it, God knows it's not coming out her--

What? It is? Hot damn, that's great news. It's a few months off, though, right? Probably in the late summer, early fall sort of timefra-- next week?

So, WarTech: Senko no Ronde (as it's been branded for US release) is a fighter that incorporates shmup elements into its gameplay, which is a trend we've been seeing here and there, but not on any next-gen consoles. If it's half as fun to play as it is to watch, this could be the Next Big Thing for dorks like me -- particularly when you factor in Xbox LIVE online multiplayer. Unfortunately, it'll tank, as Ubi Soft has set it at a retail price point of $59.99 -- way too high for a title as niche as WarTech

But even if the price does sink this game, the Xbox 360 is quickly becoming my favorite home for shmups. Between efforts on XBLA and risk-taking ventures like WarTech: Senko no Ronde on ol'-fashioned disc, it seems as though the good times will keep on rolling for Destructoid's resident shmup nerds.

Hit the jump for some other videos I've culled for this forthcoming genre-mashup.

What a great freakin game-play mashup concept! How has this not been thought of before. Beautiful too - I think this is what I imagined for future games when I was kid, not dreary brown and gray FPS's.

I'm not even really a fan of shmups, but this game looks badass.

Is it sad that this is the first game that makes me want to buy a 360? Wait... don't answer that.

Oh man, I need to get a pre order on this game. I love niche titles.

This is it! This is my gun that shoots swords! Well, a fighter that transforms into a sword and fires a spray of bullets, anyway.

If I had a 360, or was getting one soon, I'd get this game when it's available, seems like a fighting game that doesn't require memorizing hundreds of button combo's and other nitpicky things. I can see this becoming a BBL in the future, when the XBox 1080 (or whatever MS comes up with) is the latest and greatest.

Never considered getting a 360 till now. My most played console of recent? Sega Saturn, the shmup beast.

Looks like yet another game I'd get my ass handed to me in. But I'd sure have plenty of pretty colours to gawk at while it happened.

This has been on my radar for a few months and I'm pretty excited for it. $60 is probably a little much but if I can come up with the scratch I'm definitely going to pick it up. I have a feeling it's going to be one of those rare, hard-to-find games eventually.

if this gets one good review I am buying it on ebay... you can usually find new games for under $60. looks fucking sick, especially the seamless shooter/fighter transitions. I'm a sucker for giant robots

SO can you like, make your own machine, or do you have to use the ones the made for you?

It looks like a mashup of Zone of the Enders, Virtual On, and of course the shmup element. I love all those things, so this very well might be worth getting, even at its unfortunately high price. Well, I'll consider part of the cost a vote in favor of quirky, fresh games. Hope the controls are good.

Like Bahamut_Zero, I am a complete sap for giant robots. Mmm.

Unf. So sexy, on so many levels. This pretty much confirms that I will be getting a 360 in the damn near future. It's even ubisoft published, so a european release is likely. Just in case though, am I correct in believing 360s don't have hardware region locks?

...Goddamn, I can't get over how fucking awesome this game looks. Decent review here, which says it's more virtual on than shmup, but still plenty awesome.

i want it, but at that price, NO. seriously, what were they thinking? if they put it in the $39.99 price bracket, i'd have to consider it... but it seems like the kind of thing any other company would put on XBLA for a grand total of 1200 MS points, tops.

I'd pay 60 if we can make our own giant fighting robots. hell, I'd pay for it if it was also localised in bad engrish and we could make our own robots. I am also a sucker for giant robots :)

well sadly, no custom mech goodness exactly

"Each of the eight Rounder Mechs feature two distinct variations, as well as an unlockable in-game B.O.S.S. mode, for 24 variations in all. Go blow-for-blow against the other Rounder Mechs"

I'd actually pay €5 more for a bad engrish localisation. I fsking love those. But come on people, how is this game any less worthy of a $60 than any other game you'd buy at that price. Just because it's not a AAA blockbuster sequel wouldn't make it any less fun.
