Talk about under the radar -- I was just slapped in the face with this video not ten minutes ago. "Dude," said the harbinger of my wallet's destruction, "Check it out: it's like a fighter, but with shmup-style play. It's called Senko no Ronde, on the 360. It looks awesome." Holy crap, it does. Well, maybe I'll import it, God knows it's not coming out her--
What? It
is? Hot damn, that's great news. It's a few months off, though, right? Probably in the late summer, early fall sort of timefra--
next week? So, WarTech: Senko no Ronde (as it's been branded for US release) is a fighter that incorporates shmup elements into its gameplay, which is a trend we've been seeing here and there, but not on any next-gen consoles. If it's half as fun to play as it is to watch, this could be the Next Big Thing for dorks like me -- particularly when you factor in Xbox LIVE online multiplayer. Unfortunately, it'll tank, as Ubi Soft has set it at a retail price point of $59.99 -- way too high for a title as niche as WarTech.
But even if the price does sink this game, the Xbox 360 is quickly becoming my favorite home for shmups. Between efforts on XBLA and risk-taking ventures like WarTech: Senko no Ronde on ol'-fashioned disc, it seems as though the good times will keep on rolling for Destructoid's resident shmup nerds.

"groin-grabbingly transcendent"
...Goddamn, I can't get over how fucking awesome this game looks. Decent review here, which says it's more virtual on than shmup, but still plenty awesome.
