Warriors Orochi 2 getting patched up via Xbox Live photo

I doubt anybody expected Warriors Orochi 2 to get the mauling it received when I reviewed it, given my love of all things Koei. Sadly, sometimes a reviewer has to hurt the things he loves. It's the only way they'll get better.

Speaking of getting better, Koei has responded to complaints about excessive slowdown on the Xbox 360 version of Warriors Orochi 2 by promising that a patch is imminent. WO2 on the 360 contains the worst slowdown I have ever seen in my life and it was the sole reason why I gave Koei's latest console release an abysmal score of 2.0.

A date for the patch is going to be announced soon, and Koei claims that the slowdown problem doesn't affect any version of the game other than the Xbox 360 one. While a patch is great and will fix up what could have been one of the more excellent Warriors game of recent years, it's a shame that it had to happen in the first place. I am still stunned that Warriors Orochi 2 got released in its current state for the 360.

Warriors Orochi™2 (for Xbox 360®) Important Patch Notice (09/24/08)

Today KOEI announced that the company is preparing a patch for Warriors Orochi™2 for Xbox 360®. KOEI's top priority is to always deliver outstanding products with the highest levels of quality. However we have determined that under certain conditions unusual slow-down may occur during battle scenes in Warriors Orochi 2 for Xbox 360.

If you have purchased this game, you will be able to download a patch through Xbox LIVE. The release date of the patch will be announced soon. For the latest information, please visit KOEI.com or the official Warriors Orochi 2 minisite at www.koei.com/wo2.

This problem only affects the version for Xbox 360 and does not affect the version for PlayStation®2. We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding in this matter, and regret any inconvenience that this may have caused. Thank you for purchasing KOEI products.

That makes me feel a bit better. I planned to avoid getting this, but I will definitely try it after the patch.

This is one of those times when it's tricky to consider whether a review score is fair or not after the fact. If the slow down is brought down to reasonable levels are you allowed to amend your review in these circumstances?

I guess you've never played Bangai-O then. The slowdown there is easily three times as bad as this. Of course, when you've got 600 missiles flying around on screen, that's not necessarily a bad thing. But yeah, Bangai-O spirits taught me that not all slowdown is bad. There is such a thing as good slowdown, and it's just as important as good cholesterol.

@gamadaya:
The slowdown in that game is for dramatic effect, though. Unloading 100x4 missiles doesn't have the same punch to it if it were delivered in the same framerate as a normal attack.

Yeah, and I'm sure the graphical glitches that accompany it are for dramatic effect as well. Not to mention that the game has levels with sustained slowdown, and I don't think they're meant to be dramatic all the way through. But that I can understand. Bangai-O really pushes the DS's limits. This "game", Warriors Orochi 2, clearly isn't the pinnical of graphical perfection. I mean, I've played Dead Rising, and it doesn't run like this. It looks a lot better than this too. KOEI seems to have dropped the ball here.

well I won't feel bad now when I find 45 bucks to spend on it. I wish they announced this about a week ago before I bought Armored core: 4A.

still....I agree this shouldn't have happened to begin with. I'm getting tired of developers releasing games, problem with said game, then it's ok to "Fix it through patch". This slowdown has been present since the Japanese version. Why are they JUST beginning to fix it? And through patch at that?

as for Bangai-O, that slowdown IMO is really needed. Especially with all the missiles flying everywhere. Even when a few fast missiles are flying around and it's at normal framerate, it's pretty hard to dodge or breakthrough.

I know! I sometimes get killed because I have killed off too many enemies and the game speeds up without warning. I am quickly reminded of the fact that I don't have super-human reflexes.

Also, the slowdown being present in the Japanese version doesn't mean anything. Everyone in Japan got it for the PS3, so I doubt they heard any complaining.

And Sterling once again feeds our concerns for Koei games!

@Gamadaya

whoops. Forgot 360's bad sales in Japan...you mean PS2 right? cause neither of the WO games made it to PS3 for whatever reason.

from what I understand though the PS2 version had the bad slowdown also...worse than the 360 version. or So I read.

Oh wow, reallY? I didn't know this wasn't on the PS3. MS is really snatching up all they can in Japan. But in any case, the Japanese seem to have a higher tolerance for unnacceptable stuff than we do. Shit that flies over there won't fly here. Or maybe KOEI has realized the fanbase will snatch up any of their Warriors games no matter what they do.

ok sure people can get into them but these games have pretty shoddy controls, camera work and incremental upgrades. my little cousin has fun playing with his poop but i don't think i'll be joining him.
